Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele released the following statement late Saturday night following the passage of the House Democrats' health care reform bill. Here's the full text:

"Today with help from their liberal House allies, President Obama and Nancy Pelosi finally got what they have been creating behind closed doors these past months - a government-run health care experiment that will increase families' health care costs, increase the deficit, increase taxes on small businesses and the middle class, and cut Medicare. As the elections in Virginia and New Jersey clearly showed, the American people oppose bigger government, more federal spending, and higher taxes. Broad, bipartisan opposition to this bill was on full display this evening, and the Democrats who ultimately voted for Nancy Pelosi's liberal health care plan will have to answer to their constituents.

"Nancy Pelosi and her liberal lieutenants made a lot of promises today to get the votes they desperately needed. Make no mistake - the Democrat leadership's assurances were based on political expediency, not principle. Anyone receiving a promise from Pelosi is guaranteed to be disappointed in the end when their votes are no longer needed.

"Americans want a common-sense bipartisan approach to health care reform, not President Obama's and Nancy Pelosi's costly, 1,990-page government-run experiment on our nation's health care system. The House Republican solution to health care reform is the right direction for America, but Nancy Pelosi had no interest in bipartisanship, choosing instead to force her costly government-run experiment on the American people."

Blah, blah, blah...
Same old tired BS
Lies, fabrications and hyperbole.
If there was actually any"common sense" over there they might be taken seriously.

"...behind closed doors..."

In those oh-so-cloistered committee meetings.

"a government-run health care experiment"

Not government-run.

"that will increase families' health care costs,"

CBO and economists in general disagree.

"increase the deficit,"

Wrong. Read the numbers.

"increase taxes on small businesses and the middle class,"

Only if the middle class is making more than $500,000 a year.

"and cut Medicare."

It eliminates inefficiencies. It doesn't cut real benefits.

"As the elections in Virginia and New Jersey clearly showed, the American people oppose bigger government, more federal spending, and higher taxes."

That's why they voted for Hoffman in NY-23! Oh, wait...

"Broad, bipartisan opposition to this bill was on full display this evening,"

As was bipartisan support for it. Your whip failed. You should ask for his resignation.

"and the Democrats who ultimately voted for Nancy Pelosi's liberal health care plan will have to answer to their constituents."

Yeah, they'll have to answer their constituents. The chilling thing for you personally is that answer will be "You're welcome."

"Americans want a common-sense bipartisan approach to health care reform,"

Americans really don't know what they want, if the polls are any indicator. There's not enough poling data on what health reform conditions individuals actually want. What we do know is that they want a public option.

"not President Obama's and Nancy Pelosi's costly,"

Penance points for noting that it's costly, even though it more-than-covers those costs.

"1,990-page"

Penance points for being able to count.

"The House Republican solution to health care reform is the right direction for America,"

CBO and virtually all economists beg to differ. It does virtually nothing. Consequently, the Repulican solution might as well be the status quo, which is unsustainable.

"but Nancy Pelosi had no interest in bipartisanship,"

If the Republicans were interested in anything resembling reform, I doubt Pelosi would have a problem bringing them to the table. Your party started this debate with the premise that reform is evil socialism and must be stopped at all cost. Your half-hearted 'alternative' does practically nothing and cannot be viewed as viable in a rational discussion of people with IQs greater than four.

So, Mr. Steele, assuming I give you some pity points here and there, I'd give you a score of maybe 30/100 for these remarks. There is so much here that is so patently false that it's amazing anyone would ever put you in a position of authority, let alone let you talk to the media.

I don't know if you've been successful in giving the RNC a hip-hop makeover. But you've clearly been successful in making the tone of the party one where truth is not only unimportant but actively despised by party leadership.

It's funny they had to wait for the insurance lobbyists to write their "health care reform" bill. Of course that is expected since Big Oil wrote their last energy bill. Every dem talking head needs to be pushing that the GOP alternative was written by insurance lobbyists since most of it was lifted from AHIP's report. The only thing Republicans represent is Corporate America.

From Rep Miller:
GOP stands for "Grandstand, Oppose, Pretend"

That's a nail hit right on the head.

Go away Steele, your magnet's calling. What did you repig bastards have to offer? Something about nothing for the common man and everything for the corporations...

If I had my way, I would open hunting season on every CEO and every republican who is in office. The Corporations need to be placed behind the needs of the people, I for one, thought that corporations were formed to be a tool to help mankind. Not a chance of that, only the very rich and connected have any benefit from the corporations. One of these years, there will be a revolution and those who have been enslaving the citizenry will be called to account, judged and their lives and fortunes will be forfit. Lets hope that it also cleans up the gene pool..

I'm always amused when the number of pages in a bill is cited as cause for indictment. What would the GOP have, a health care bill that fits on one side of a cocktail napkin?

Oh, I forgot...

Icon- thank you for the point by point deconstruction. I wish I could do that, but there's so much crap, it is hard to know where to start. Do these clowns realize how absurd these kinds of statements are? Do they really think anyone not steeped in the politics of resentment shares their point of view? The self-deception is breath-taking. I am always fascinated by crazy people who appear normal til they start talking.

What part of bipartisanship includes comparing your opponent to Hitler, calling them "socialist", "fascist", and "Communist"?

BTW, its nice to know that the Right finally thinks "Fascism" (i.e. Government by Corporate power) is something bad. Maybe they ought to try looking up the definition sometime.

BTW, nice of Steele to credit Liberals with getting this passed. He got one thing right: Republicans were defeated by LIBERALS!

Man does that feel good to write.
