Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele, speaking in an interview this weekend about attracting black voters to his party, said white Republicans have been scared of him.
The Hill reports that Steele was appearing on NewsOne's Washington Watch on Sunday when the host, Roland Martin, asked him about bringing in more African-American voters to the Republican party.
"One of the criticisms I've always had is Republicans -- white Republicans -- have been scared of black folks," Martin said.
"You're absolutely right. I mean I've been in the room and they've been scared of me," Steele said. "I'm like, 'I'm on your side' and so I can imagine going out there and talking to someone like you, you know, [say] 'I'll listen.' And they're like, 'Well.'"

If that's the case, why is he still RNC chairman? The GOP seems to be building their whole future on fear of a black man.

Simple answer: Steele is not really in charge of anything. The RNC doesn't run the GOP. The real decisions are made by Ailes, Rove, Boehner, Limbaugh and McConnell.
Steele is a convenient, distracting figurehead.

Don't forget Phyllis Schlafly and the Eagle Forum... Routinely ignored yet arguably even more powerful than anyone you mentioned...

and that was the most nuanced way to say that? To confirm that white republicans are scared of blacks. We here can say scared or hating or whatever adjectives of why there is not a lot of love from many white republicans towards african americans. However, if I was representing that group (shudder), I think I would have said something a bit more diplomatic, this guy just keeps on shooting his foot.

On the other hand (or is the expression I'm looking for "By the same token..."?), neither white nor black Democrats are even remotely afraid of Michael Steele. Hmmmm...

Because they hold a large bloc of votes in Congress and have occasionally held the presidency, as well.

Mr. Steele - they're afraid of you because they seriously believe you might, at any time, pull out a gun and rob them and/or assault their wife. Yes, I know that you're wearing a suit, and haven't ever committed a crime. It doesn't matter to a bigot; you're black, and that's all.

I thought when applied to gun owners, if they havent used it in a negligent way yet, they are law abiding citizens. Why should it differ when applied to a black man in a suit? Oh yeah, hes black.

If I were a white (or ANY color) Republican, I would be very scared of Mr. Steele...not because he's black but because he is flat out the worst chair of either party I've observed during my lifetime of following politics! GOPS...do yourselves a big favor and GET RID OF THIS DOOF! Or...do us Dems an even bigger favor and keep him!

Personally, I'm really worried that Steele will solidify the Republican party. I think they're in for big gains next November. Especially if they run hard right-wing candidates.

I think Steele is the GOP's token African-American (him and Alan Keyes). They can point to him and say "See we're not anti-minority!"

Of course. The GOP sees a smart woman like Hillary Clinton, and answers with a dim-witted woman, Sarah Palin. They see a smart black man like President Obama, and answer with a dim-witted black man, Michael Steele.
Because all others are reduced to stereotypes, they don't understand that these smart Democrats are not the same as those Republicans.

This is actually quite revealing. Steele is absolutely right: white Republicans are truthfully very afraid of him or any other Black man. This bold declaration of reality indicates two very real problems under which Steele is operating. First, he has no social filter: he doesn't know how to mask his thoughts. He says whatever spins into and out of his head, knowing full well that it's the truth, but oblivious to the ramifications. Secondly, he's very aware that the party he loves hates him, but he's sworn to promote and enhance their agenda, even if it's to his detriment. The cognitive dissonance totally eludes him, which suggests to me that he has some serious self awareness and self esteem challenges. I don't want to be there when reality overwhelms his obviously fortified coping skills.
I'm not a shrink, but Mike Steele is one sick puppy.

IF the GOP is afraid of him, how can they have any serious communication between them. It should be a reason to leave the position of his own accord. How can anyone expect to effectively work with people who they fear?
BUT what if they fear him because he is a loose cannon and they never know what is going to fly out of his mouth next? The GOP has plenty of problems without some walking sound bite maker giving the MSM something with which to mock them. There's plenty enough already.

Either that, or this is some weird, Joseph Papp-Public Theater adaptation of "Othello" to modern life. Like Ethan Hawke in that Hamlet updated to the corporate world.

steele is a shameless panderer. always has been. it's how mickey s. rolls -- and it always gets him in trouble. he tells whomever he's talking to whatever it is he thinks they want him to say. and the next day he crawls on glass to kiss massah's boot in forgiveness.
like when he told homeboy dl hughley he's the "de facto leader of the republican party" and called limbaugh "incendiary" and "ugly". 24 hrs later he's tongue-waxing limbaugh's crack.
like when he told gq's lisa depaulo that abortion's "an individual choice". 24 hrs later it's time to pucker up for tony perkins.
not that there's anything wrong with that. as the biggest collection of watb's in the country, republicans really enjoy having an eager beaver like steele eating out of their diapers on a weekly basis. and they let him play "the captain". so everybody's happy.

Lot of name calling in the commentary here. Very little analysis on issues. Very much "repugs, retards, cracklickers, stupid, whackos' and the like.
This is not a good sign of things to come. This is not a way toward solving problems.

Republicans reacted with glee when Joe Biden was selected as Obama's running mate. We were supposedly going to witness a non-stop string of verbal gaffs form the VP candidate. When that didn't happen during the Election, we were told that he would be embarassing Obama at every turn.
Didn't exactly turn out that way, did it?
Seems like we are seeing a non-stop string of dumbass remarks, just as Republicans predicted, only they're coming from the RNC Chairman, not the Office of the VP.
Guess you gotta be careful what you wish for.

I think steele is as much a tool as the next guy but this headline is a cheap shot. "I've been in the room when they've been scared of me" isn't "white rebublicans are scared of me" at all. The actual article headline is thoughtful enough to use the word 'some' but still, it all feels a little huffpo.
