November 11, 2009: a sad day in the history of television media. Lou Dobbs abruptly announced he would be leaving his job at CNN after almost 30 years at the network (see TPM's photo feature commemorating Dobbs here).

Last night Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert paid their own personal tributes to this giant of TV punditry and xenophobia.

Stewart likened Dobbs's move to one made earlier this year by Alaska governor Sarah Palin: "Lou Dobbs is going Palin! He's going rogue! Lou Dobbs is saying 'The problems that we are facing are too important for me, Lou Dobbs, to stay at my job. I'm going rogue!' We got another rogue! That's TWO rogues!"

Stephen Colbert had a typically more selfish reaction to Dobbs's announcement, absorbing the entirety of Dobbs's audience and opinions in a spellbinding 'Highlander'-style spectacle:

Of course, as always, pitch perfect.

Insert random observation about how real truthtelling is now only found on television on Comedy Central.

Co-sign on Mr. LarsThor's comment, and as for jadez: Insert random metaphysical question asking "If a Moyers screams in the forest on a Friday night when everyone else is out at the bars, does anybody hear it?" :-\

Though I have to say that I LOVE Robert Gibbs being given the green light to say that Fox is not a legit news org. Alas, Mr. Gibbs, You're No Jon Stewart, but I give Obama credit for letting Gibbs off the short leash here.

Can't wait for the Lou and Sarah show on FOX, with special commentary from roving reporter, Orly Taitz!

The Lou and Sarah show, starring Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball.

Tune in next week when Sarah sez: "That's it. Vitameatavegamin contains vitamins, meat, megetables and vinerals. So why don't you join the thousands of happy peppy people and get a great big bottle of Vitaveatyvemeanyminimoe. I'll tell you what you have to do. You have to take a whole tablespoonful after every meal. It's so tasty too. It's just like candy." And Lou sez: "Everyone seemed to be doing well except me and my career. And my accent was no helping me any."

Maybe I'm just getting paranoid in my old age, but it really sounds to me like Mr. Dobbs is preparing to run for office.

Running in the fine tradition of Fred Thompson, I'm sure.

He's going to change his gig & now engage in productive problem solving & contribute positively to issues. What did he call what he was doing? International relations? Foreign correspondent? Agitator in Chief? Latin 101?
His resume guarantees him a job at Fox, although that doesn't solve much & definitely isn't positive or some sory of representative in the deep South.

Leftflank, that's it exactly, right? He is essentially admitting, in his words, that what he previously brought to the table was negativity and being part of the problem rather than the solution. I hit on this in my own tribute to Lou's leaving:
