The amendment introduced by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) to the House Democrats' health care bill passed Saturday night in a 240-194 vote. No Republicans voted against the amendment, though Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) voted "present" as a means of protest against the general bill up for debate.
The amendment "explicitly bars federal subsidies from going to plans that cover abortion," The Hill reports. Rep. Jane Schakowsky (D-IL) took a public lead in fighting it, telling C-SPAN's "Washington Journal" about Democratic efforts to organize against the amendment.

shameful. this was allowed, while progressives laid down and were not allowed to offer any ammendments, and then this passes, with democratic votes.

Certainly. And final passage of HCR was just this close as it is. Somehow I don't think that was so much that progressives "laid down" though.
Because final passage was just this close, wasn't it — probably because that piece of crap was in there.
After all, if there is, say, some part of an overall HCR package that happens to be poorly conceived and is also — very likely — unconstitutional, then that part of the package will fold on the first or second constitutional court challenge.
And the remainder of the HCR package will remain in place.
Unless, in a fit of self-destructiveness akin to the current Rethuglican desire to drive out moderates and achieve "purity" among thier party members, the progressives drive out the Blue Dogs and lose those districts to the Rethugs that usually occupy those seats — and hand the 2010 and 2012 elections back to the newly purified neo-skinheads.
Tea? Anyone?
If (when?) that hand-back occurs, then the whole HCR would likely be repealed.
And the SC court will likely be handed one more conservative.
And then Roe will be overturned. Which pretty much makes the Stupak amendment totally redundant, Right?

It so nice to have Rome dictating U.S. public policy.

Maybe not so much hates women, as much as it does love children.

On the upside of the STUPID amendment will be the death of the 'tort reform' (read 'repeal') movement.
This amendment, if it actually makes it to law, will become the lawsuit bonanza that the Christian right will use to grind most women's services in the US to a halt, through the active civil litigation to prove a 'not-one-federal-dollar' money trail for every instance of every one of those services.

I think it's funny that for all those who claim they want government out of their lives, conservative dems and repubs are the first to use government in the name of religion to take away females autonomy over their own body and liberals lay down without a fight. Some are saying the amendment was a necessary evil to get the bill passed...tell that to your daughters when they ask why they don't have the same health rights over their own body as men do. I am tired of self righteous politicians and religious nuts telling women what they can and cannot do with their own body. My wife and daughters deserve the same rights as me.
