Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) -- who shouted "You lie!" at President Obama during a September address to a joint session of Congress -- was chosen by Republicans to join House Minority Leader John Boehner in presenting German Chancellor Angela Merkel to a joint session of Congress before her historic address today.

In a statement, Wilson said:

I'm honored to be chosen by Republican Leader Boehner and other Congressional leaders to escort German Chancellor Angela Merkel to the Joint Session of Congress. This honor is particularly special to me because I admire Chancellor Merkel's capable and strong leadership for the German people and the world community.

Chancellor Merkel grew up under the communism of East Germany and now she assumes the post of chancellor of the unified Germany. I'm confident she will continue to inspire and lead towards greater prosperity with conservative principles.

I also appreciate the investment Germany has made in South Carolina with BMW's economic contribution.

...And a nice way to kiss up to the Far-right by basically endorsing Wilson's (and by extention the Tea-Bagger's) behavior.

The right seems to be doubling down on extremism. Can that really play well in 2010?

Why does Joe Wilson hate American car makers?

To be fair, the BMW plant in Spartanburg IS kind of a big deal, and it's not surprising that a local politico would be chosen for this ego-fluffing role... boorish outbursts in the past or not.

I don't like seeing the guy's face more than anyone else, but we don't entirely have to read this as an F.U. gesture by the GOP.
