House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) issued the following statement today, on the announcement by Rep. Parker Griffith of Alabama, switching from the Democrats to the Republican Party. Here is the full text:

"When a Member of Congress decides to leave a 258 seat majority to join a deep minority, it is a sure sign that the majority party has become completely disconnected from seniors, young workers, and families in America. From the massive stimulus bill that wasted billions of dollars and failed to create jobs, to a job-killing cap and trade energy tax, to a government takeover of health care - the Democrat majority has pursued an agenda far outside the mainstream. Democrats are beginning to realize what most Americans did months ago - that their priorities are not in line with what Americans want right now - which is job growth, economic security, a safe and secure nation, and a fiscally sane Congress that doesn't spend money that it doesn't have.

"We welcome Parker Griffith to the Republican Conference, and will continue to stand and fight against the damaging agenda of this Administration working in tandem with the Pelosi/Reid run Congress."

Hmm. Job growth: by how, cutting taxes? The economy grew in the 90s after taxes were raised. There's no evidence that reducing taxes even lower than they are now (and they are pretty low) will increase job growth.

Economic security: if the GOP had gone along with health care reform, economic security would have been much easier. Social Security is also a form of economic security, which the GOP, not the Democratic Party, tried to radically change.

A safe and secure nation: the GOP was the party that tried to filibuster a military spending bill.

A fiscally sane Congress: like the GOP-led Congress that passed a massive Medicare program earlier this decade without paying for it?

Eric, you and your party knows what being disconnected feels like. You live in that world every day. Out of touch is your mantra!!! This Griffith defection is actually a good thing for the Dems. You shall see.

Because one southerner bolts the Dems to join the GOP the Dems are disintegrating? He's only the latest southern Democrat to join the party that is mostly concentrated in the South and Plains states.

Seems to me that a lot of 'Southern Democrats' have historically become Republicans. Might want to read up on your history there Cantor.
