During the Sunday Senate debate on health care, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) called on the American people to pray that a Democratic Senator would be unable to vote on the health care bill, in order to force Democrats to work with Republicans on the issue.
"What the American people oughtta pray is that somebody can't make the vote tonight," Coburn said. "That's what they oughtta pray, so that we can actually get the middle -- not me, not mine, I understand I'm way over here -- but we oughtta get the middle of America and the middle of the Senate a bill that can run through this country and actually do what we say we all want to do."
Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) attacked Coburn's strange wish, which could be interpreted as wishing bad things on a fellow Senator. "When it reaches a point where we're praying, asking people to pray, that senators wouldn't be able to answer the roll call, I think it has crossed the line," said Durbin, also adding: "I don't think we should be wishing misfortune on either side of the aisle."
Last week, we covered the Family Research Council holding an intercessionary prayer vigil, that God might enter into Democratic Senators' hearts and change their minds on the issue. I don't recall hearing any prayers that something would happen to Dem Senators that would cause them to be unable to make the vote, but from a purely utilitarian standpoint Coburn's twist on the theme would be just as good.

This is totally consistent with much of the self-righteous, inflammatory nonsense being spewed by the right wing ever since Obama was elected. We have Bachmann calling on her constituents to take up arms against the federal government, preachers praying for Michele Obama to become a widow, radio talk show hosts encouraging listeners to cause physical harm to federal judges, etc.
Apparently, democracy only matters when their candidates are elected.

Call me crazy, but maybe religious fundamentalists shouldn't be elected to public office. How did Oklahoma end up with both of the the two nuttiest senators?

I cannot imagine...In essence, praying for people to die from lack of health care. WWJD? Not that.

I think you're on to something! This is a plan by the End Of Days'ers to create such a toxic soup of evil that the Second Coming in hastened!

Coburn admits that he is not part of "the Center", as he says: I am way over here (indicating far right). So are there any Centrist Republicans left? Snowe (Maine) can be swayed, but can't be rushed!
I find it sad that a GOP Senator would "pray" that someone can't make it to the Roll Call vote...is that what they have devolved to? Hope that an individual can't perform their sworn duty as a way of stopping legislation?

He should be praying that God doesn't throw a lightning bolt at him to get him to shut his ignorant pie hole. He is vile human trash. You have to wonder though what it feels like to be invisible and of no consequence to anybody, anywhere, at anytime. Wow!

I'm not sure God would appreciate this kind of prayer.
