A local reporter attempting to cover President Obama's speech at West Point this week was not allowed in when he told security officials he had a hunting gun in the trunk of his car.
West Point spokesman Jim Fox tells TPM that the reporter volunteered the fact that he had the firearm in his car, saying he left it there inadvertently.
He was interviewed by both the Secret Service and West Point's military police. The Secret Service determined he didn't pose a threat to the President, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the incident. But the reporter was asked to leave.
The news comes as the Secret Service is facing scrutiny over its role in letting two uninvited guests into the White House for Obama's first state dinner. In several incidents earlier this year, protesters carried guns outside venues where the President was speaking.
The official also told TPM that the reporter, a longtime journalist who has covered White House events in the past, had applied for press credentials to cover the speech but was denied.
The incident happened around 12:30 p.m., several hours before the President arrived.
Security checks delayed the traveling White House press corps by more than an hour. But Fox denied that this incident added to the normal security delays that happen at such events.
"This matter had no effect on the lines, or any delays," Fox said.
The White House directed all questions to the Secret Service.

"The official also told TPM that the reporter...had applied for press credentials to cover the speech but was denied."
Maybe that's why he was asked to leave, and it had nothing to do with the gun in his trunk?
I guess the lack-of-invitation meme has gotten old this past week, so the gun-in-the-trunk angle had to be played up.

FWIW, I live just a few miles from West Point, and it's deer season here right now. There are a lot of people driving around with guns right now.

I come from a hunting family and know lots of hunters. They do not drive around with guns during deer hunting season. They have their guns with them only when they are going hunting. President Obama is the most threatened president in history. Do you understand why folks should not bring guns to his appearances? How do we know who is friend or foe?

No, he showed up anyway, for some reason we're not privy to.
He happened to have left his hunting rifle in the trunk of his car, which was probably nowhere near where the President was going to speak hours later.
This isn't news.

There is, of course, the possibility that the gun could be stolen while the "responsible gun owner"/reporter was elsewhere.

You know, I may not have all the story here but I'm confused. First the SS lets gun holders anywhere Obama speaks - NO PROBLEM. Then the Secret Service gets caught letting riff raff in to a state dinner. (I wonder if they hadn't posted on face book would anyone had known?.) So now they decide to finally shape up and do their jobs, or at least until the MSM turns their attention elsewhere.

I don't find this shocking or alarming at all. A local reporter in a rural area who likely hunts multiple times a week had a hunting rifle in his vehicle during deer season and forgot to take it out before he went to go cover a story. The guy likely has a busy life like the rest of us, and just forgot about it. He was asked about it by SS, told the truth, and left when asked.
Honestly, I see this as an example of the protocols working as intended. Fussing over the situation makes TPM seem much more "cultural elite" than I think is actually the case.

Yeah: can't fault a "cultural elite" news reporter for being a "responsible gun owner" who forgets that his gun is in his trunk. No big deal: no one has ever been shot and killed by a hunting rifle because they aren't intended to kill people.
Dick "Blundermouth" Cheney notwithstanding.
Besides, more people are killed by motor vehicles every year than are killed by guns, even though motor vehicles aren't intended to kill people . . .

good point. an ounce of prevention never hurt anyone. Maybe the reporter was trying to do a "gotcha"; tell them he has a gun accidentally in the trunk and see if they let him in just because he was a reporter. Probably thought he was doing investigative journalism or something.

The likely scenario is that the Secret Service did not have a problem with the gun in the trunk because they were going to screen everyone who came near the President.
The military probably had a problem with an unauthorized gun on the base and told the guy to hit the road.
They have reason to be concerned about unauthorized weapons, presidential visit or not.

Since we are proceeding to alter our society so that guns are more freely carried, tracking when and where they are carried would seem to be a good idea.
The most likely scenario is that the doofus reporter simply forgot his hunting rifle. The most disturbing scenarios is that he was as a White House reporter denied a pass he was angered and inflamed and in unknown difficulties in his private life and intended to use it.
Does anyone know whether or not the reporter simply fessed up or whether he fessed up because he saw trunks being searched?

Wow, how did we get to rifle? I don't see that in the story. He had a gun for hunting is what I read. Some of us hunt with shotguns which, depending on ammo, are not nearly as lethal, and scary as a rifle. Is that why we're using rifle? Or did I miss that in the story.
Personally this time of year I have a shotgun in my truck a lot of the time. As someone who works with schools I have to take special care to ensure that I don't have it with me on district visists. I can see how this guy would have forgotten that it was there.

This so-called reporter obviously doesn't keep up with the news much. Otherwise he might have realized that West Point is both a military installation -- like Fort Hood -- and a university (the U.S. Military Academy) -- like Virginia Tech -- and that it might be just a little inappropriate at this point in history to show up at those kinds of places with a firearm stashed in his trunk -- even if the president of the United States wasn't going to be there that day.

He might not be looking for a reality show, but might just be looking for some resume exposure - maybe for a certain type of network (ahem..cough..Fox) to offer him a gig.
