In an op-ed today, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano addressed the attempted attack on Flight 253, and wrote that the Obama administration "is determined to find and fix the vulnerabilities in our systems that allowed this breach to happen."

In an op-ed for USA Today, Napolitano wrote that the attempted bombing "is a powerful illustration that terrorists will go to great lengths to try to defeat the security measures that have been put in place since September 11."

"The administration is determined to find and fix the vulnerabilities in our systems that allowed this breach to happen," she said.

Napolitano continued:

While the investigation continues into the affiliations of the attacker, and as we address the circumstances behind this specific incident, we must also recognize the evolving threats posed by violent extremists, and take action to ensure our defenses continue to evolve to defeat them.

Napolitano also called fighting and preventing terrorism a "shared responsibility," and concluded: "Make no mistake: The Department of Homeland Security and agencies across the federal government are working quickly to address what went wrong on Christmas Day. If we work together, if we remain vigilant and if we refuse to live in fear, we can and will protect our country."

Napolitano has been under fire for her comment that the "system worked" in the wake of the Flight 253 incident, which some have interpreted to be referring to the intelligence failures that resulted in the attempted attack.

Napolitano backtracked on that comment the next day.

Amazing, actual thought before action. Let me do the headline for the Republican response: "GOP Slams Obama Administration for Admitting Failure"

Maybe she should go. I don't dislike her, but I don't think we have the
luxury for the kind of slop that characterized the W years, and, having
lived through that, I'm sick of it. The simple fact is that it happened
on her watch. And, what a bunch of reprobates over at the CIA! When
are we gonna get real intelligence gathering in this country.

I'm with those saying she should resign. The response should have been: "The system put in place by Bush failed. Our work to fix that system has been hobbled by Sen. DeMint's hold on the appointment of a new TSA chief, who's first assigned priority is the modernization and streamlining of the frankly jerry-rigged and broken Bush-administration security apparatus. We as an administration have failed by not forcing DeMint's hold to be broken earlier."

The political response must come first. It is not "politicizing" the event. These are by definition and nature political events. The Republicans are either allied with our enemies or committed to incompetence. To protect America, this must be made clear at every turn.

Yes. Politics should always come first. Forget the American citizenry and their safety. Deflecting blame is the number one priority.

It's a good thing this guy wasn't a "violent extremist".
