The New Jersey state senate is scheduled to vote on legalizing gay marriage next week.

Sen. Ray Lesniak (D) announced Thursday on the Statehouse steps that the Judiciary Committee will take up the bill on Monday. The full senate will vote on the measure Thursday.

Coming just days after the New York state senate defeated a gay marriage bill, the New Jersey votes present a big risk. It's not clear if the votes are there.

Steve Goldstein, executive director of Garden State Equality, said yesterday they don't yet have enough votes.

"We're counting votes. We're not there yet in one of the houses but things have changed dramatically in the last 48 hours where the momentum has shifted our way," Goldstein said.

But advocates are eager to get a bill passed while Gov. Jon Corzine, a Democrat, is still in office. Corzine has vowed to sign the bill. His Republican successor, Governor-elect Christ Christie, has vowed to veto it. Christie takes office Jan. 19, 2010.

The bill needs 21 votes to pass the senate, and Democrats hold 23 seats. At least one Democrat, Judiciary Committee Chairman Paul Sarlo, has vowed to vote against the measure.

In the assembly, Democrats have 48 of the 80 seats. They would need 41 votes to pass the measure.

Same-sex civil unions are legal in New Jersey.

Respondents to a recent Quinnipiac poll opposed gay marriage 49 to 46 percent.

An ironic vote is coming up in California.

Since the voters do not want to allow gays to marry, the gays want a vote that says straight people cannot divorce - ever.

Wonder how Rudy, Newt, etc would handle that one?

His election was one of the few moments in my life that I actually felt ashamed to say New Jersey is my home state. I don't live there any longer, but I still follow current events concerning the rest of my family still there.

Most of the other times, I have held my head high and proudly proclaim I am from Jersey, exit 6. Phillies Phan.

It was bizarre. But it wasn't like Buttertub Christie won the hearts of voters. Many, many, MANY Democrats voted Democratic down the line except for gov. They hate high property taxes and blamed Corzine. (Of course, with an estimated $8B budget shortfall for next year, it's not like Christie will be able to do anything about it--even if he wanted to.) Dems retained the state legislature. If anyone had run in Corzine's place, Christie would have lost.

Regardless, I predict that Christie's honeymoon will end soon after he takes office.

"Preventing my marriage won't save yours."

That's revelatory.

I'm not in favor of gay marriage. I'm not opposed to it, either. Since I don't plan on having one (I lack the major qualification), it's really none of my business. In other words, if you're against gay marriage, don't have one. Problem solved.

And don't let your tax dollars support one either.

Marriage has nothing to do with taxes.

Now all of the sudden a gay getting health coverage because they're gay and married to a federal employee doesn't mean they're getting my tax dollars? c'mon.

They already get coverage! It's called civil unions. We've had that for several years already. Marriage is just civil unions with a new name. Even Buttertub Christie supports civil unions for gays.
