No, this is not an Onion story. On C-SPAN's call in show this morning, a woman named Bunny from Parsons, Kansas, said she was so disappointed by the Senate's health care vote that she took down her Christmas tree. And it seems like her call was not a prank.
It wasn't just Bunny's tree that went. "I have taken my Christmas wreath off my house. I have taken all the lights down," she said. "This is supposed to be a nation under God, and it isn't. They absolutely have ruined Christmas."
You can see C-SPAN host Peter Slen, no doubt trained to deal with the occasional eccentric caller, cock his head ever so slightly as Bunny breaks the news.
"So you took down your Christmas tree because of the Senate health care bill?" he asks, with a hint of incredulity.
"I certainly did. And I would like to see every light in the nation go out, especially in the White House," Bunny replies.
She also explains that members of Congress are sullying "God's holiday for the birth of his son" and that she opposes the bill so fiercely because its death panel provisions will unleash a "genocide"on seniors.
Watch the exchange from just after the 7 a.m. vote:

Isn't taking down your Christmas tree an act of war against Christmas?
Or would it be PRO-Christmas, since the Christmas tree is an entirely pagan symbol?

Actually, as a former Republican, I can tell you I was so happy about the Senate passing this Health Care Bill that I put up a new Christmas tree in the public area of our condo yard. Having worked in a University hospital as an RN, I have seen first hand the devastation in advanced disease processes caused by a family's lack of insurance. We have a group of former Republicans here working to encourage health care legislation but it is tough in this heavily Republican State. We do have some Democratic Representatives and we are supporting them by giving and letter writing.

Actually, it is even worse than that. It is an act that is disrespectful of the birth of Christ. Hmmm, I just reread that piece and it is just silly. Taking down a Christmas tree has nothing to do with anything of a political nature. Perhaps people get so caught up in partisan politics that they forget the true meaning of the Christ Child who came.

Like the Republicans, the Tea Baggers are driven by a dark force. That force being a bottomless hole that runs straight through the center of them. That hole must be fed with fear, greed, hate, ignorance, and they serve their dark master well.
Thick as thieves they are - these tea baggers and republicans. They recognize this devouring hole in each other, and that common bond unites them in hating all that is good and loathing good people who do not have to feed such a relentless and incessantly hollow hole. In short, their dark secret love is to destroy.
It's simple human nature.

I take that to mean that in your opinion these two aren't the worst two senators from a single state. I think we need a poll to figure this one out. They have to be in the running for this distinction. Which two are at the bottom in your estimation? Personally, I'd have to give the edge to the pair from Kentucky. After all, Mitch McConnell isn't the senate minority leader for the heck of it. His credentials as a brainless windbag aren't to be sniffed at. He and Jim Bunning have some stiff competition. However, Bunning is ranked as the second most conservative senator after Jim DeMint of South Carolina. IMHO the pairing of McConnell and Bunning are hard to beat.

ah, the 2 worst senators from a single state have to be lautenburg and menendez from new jersey. they provided 2 votes for the healthcare bill and got nothing in return. unlike lieberman, nelson, landrieu, and lincoln, these 2 nitwits gave it all up for nothing. sorta like whore working on a street corner then giving it away for free. now we all know what a senator is, we just haggling over the price, and the 2 from new jersey are cheap.

Yes, let's not forget the true meaning of Christmas.
December 25th commemorated the birthday of the Roman sun god-emperor, Sol. It was the first day when the amount of daylight detectably lengthened, hence it celebrated the birthday of 'the unconquered sun', Sol Invictus. When the Roman Empire converted to Christianity, they were reluctant to give up pagan party-time, so they simply exchanged one deity's birthday for another.
Shortly beforehand was the week-long celebration of Saturnalia, whence we derive the tradition of gift exchange.
There is no evidence scripturally or secularly that early Christians in the first century commemorated the birth of Jesus Christ. In fact, in keeping with early Jewish law and tradition, it is likely that birthdays were not commemorated at all. According to The World Book Encyclopedia: "early Christians considered the celebration of anyone's birth to be a pagan custom."

OK Bunny, first of all it's only been one nation "Under God" since 1954 when the phrase was ADDED to the pledge due to McCarthy's frothing at the mouth about Communists, and it was only added to the pledge, not to America as a whole, which was not, and IS not a "Christian nation."
Second of all Bunny, by tying the miracle of Jesus' rebirth to political legislation, all you're doing is going against Jesus' own teachings, when he told the money-exchangers and businesses in the temple to get out; to leave spiritual matters to spiritual authorities, and secular matters to secular authorities.
In the end, Bunny, it's you who are sullying your religion by inserting it into politics of this world. I recommend Matthew 6:6. Read for comprehension.

Thank you for the reference to Matthew 25. Every Christian democrat should shout this as our creed. It is the most explicit passage in the Bible telling us exactly what Jesus expects from us and exactly who will be going to Heaven. He tells us we must take care of the sick, the poor, the least of us. Those people will be rewarded. Those who turn their back will be punished. This time of year reveals the absolute disconnect between the birth of the Savior and actually following what he instructed us to do and how to live. So while the Christian Right focus on gays, abortion, and Revelations they completely miss the point of Jesus' teachings. Remember democrats, embrace your faith because it supports our causes.

Repeat after me in the spirit of Jee-sus,
"In the spirit of Christian Christmas, may God allow this year's 49,000 victims of health insurance unavailability to die the death they are due, amen."
It must be really difficult for Christians, especially at this time of year, to know that their government has done something that might save lives someday (if it's not repealed first).
Maybe they can go kill something this winter, go hunting in the woods or something, to make themselves feel better.

It just gets stranger every day.. You just can't make this stuff up with the analogy of this being the same as randomly rapping your head up against a cinder block wall on a daily basis...
Do they send out do-it-yourself manuals from Cluster-Fox on "How-To" for these guys?? Amazing......

There are still people who believe in government death panels? I think they're misinterpreting the meaning of the term "diehard".

Um, she doesn't mention death panels in the recording. She's afraid of hospice, apparently, and her son seems to be ready to send her there right now.

She talked about "genocide" of seniors. For intellectual cripples, that's another way of saying "death panels".

"One Nation Under God" was a toss out to shut up religious people. It's stated very clearly in the Treaty of Tripoli (Article 11, for those of you who will want to look it up) that this country was not founded on Christianity, or any religion. I REALLY wish the Christians could accept that and move on.

If this weren't the Winter Solstice and I wasn't working to love my fellow humanoids, I'd be ROFLMAO at this poor befuddled "Twisted Sister".
But since it IS the Winter Solstice, I'm confining myself to LMAO.

Here's hoping C-SPAN had a trace on the call - and that Kansas has mental health facilities sufficient to treat this loon.

ROFL!
I've long waited to be the eyes and ears on the ground for TPM. I should have known it would be my friend Bunny that would give me the opportunity to do so. I live in Parsons. I know Bunny. I can assure you the call was no joke.
You've already used up all the possible adjectives to describe her, so I won't pile on other than to say her confusion is only matched by her certainty. She was the bane of my existence when I was the local Dem chair (she was a D at the time!). She singlehandedly brought one meeting to a complete standstill!
But mostly she's harmless--a local eccentric gadfly. So don't worry, we'll keep her here.

Honestly, when I listened to the recording I just felt pity for her and her son. She really doesn't seem to be all there.

Gives new meaning to the expression "stinkin' thinkin' "...and I agree... just what is the matter with Kansas? How do you deal with people like this? Her education would probably take a lifetime, can she read? Might want to start there.

"I'd like to support the environment, but since I'm a smoker I would be a hypocrite, so I can't, sorry..."
"It's in the Lord's hands, besides, acid rain is good for the trees in Alabama."

Some people are just stupid, and you can't fix stupid.
Others are ignorant, but with the internet they no longer have an excuse with easily accessible information at their fingertips.
Which are you, Bunny?

I like the way she put it: "It is divisive between my son, who is younger, and myself." Because when spouses, cousins, siblings etc. get all mixed up, you can never be sure.
