In a nine-minute "Special Comment" last night, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann urged the President to leave Afghanistan as soon as possible -- and not, as President Obama plans to announce tonight, send 30,000 more troops to the country.
"We cannot afford this, ethically, sir," Olbermann said.

Last time I checked the President was the COC and the Pentagon is to follow the President's orders. Olbermann, yes we should get out, but after the job is done. The criminals responsible for the heinous crime committed against this country must be brought to justice. It might be better by having a small elite military unit capable to quickly strike when intelligence dictates.
This, I believe, is the first time I disagree with Keith.

This special comment should have aired when it had some potential to influence the debate (not that there ever was one), instead of the day of the "surge 2.0" announcement.
However my reply is to the contention that 35,000 more soldiers in afghanistan will allow us to bring "the criminals responsible" for 9/11 to justice - ridiculous. Newsflash for you, buddy, they booked it out of that country almost a decade ago.

If it were that easy, it would already have been done.
For three thousand deaths, we have suffered five thousand soldiers' deaths and more than ten times that number of soldiers wounded and maimed. We have written almost a trillion dollars in debt to cover the costs. Meanwhile, Iraq looks poised to replay the civil war that made the south-central Shi'ite majority the oppressors of the northern and southern minorities, and Hamid Karzai isn't safe anywhere that he isn't escorted by American soldiers.
We've invested enough in revenge. These losses can and should be cut.
