Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan, testifying today about the state dinner security breach, refuted stories that President Obama has received more threats than previous presidents.
"The threats are not up," Sullivan said, adding that they receive about the same amount of threats against Obama as they did for presidents Clinton and Bush.
There have been a few reports this year claiming that threats are up drastically, which the Secret Service has disputed. Ronald Kessler, published a book this year claiming threats were up by 400 percent. The Boston Globe, in a story on a Congressional Research Service report, said Obama was receiving an "unprecedented" number of threats, stretching the Secret Service's resources.
At the time of the latter report, Secret Service Ed Donovan said that although Obama received a large number of threats during his campaign and directly before and after his inauguration, the number of threats was comparable to the past two presidents.
In today's hearing before the House Homeland Security Committee, Sullivan also said he doesn't believe the state dinner party crashers posed a threat to the President's safety.
Correction: This post originally incorrectly identified Kessler as a former Secret Service agent. His career has been spent as a journalist.

Mark Sullivan was one of the SS members in a racism lawsuit several years back...he was also somebody who protected GWB from the 1st amendment but doesn't protect BO from the 2nd...seems to be a conflict

Why? Didn't you figure this all out during the primaries? suddenly Obama had secret service because he was getting so many threats? Nonsense, it was all a part of the Race baiting his campaign used to appeal to liberal white quilt and African American victim-hood. They did a pretty good job of pumping up Obamamania so that no one would look at the reality of the man.
You have been had.

If Obama was indeed receiving many more death threats than any other President, what Secret Service director in his right mind would admit that? It's like saying, "We're swamped here! We might miss one!"

Um...might be better to have already said that should some attempt go down, maybe? I mean, saying they're stretched thin really wouldn't make much difference to whether a nutbar idealogue makes the attempt or not.
If somebody's going to attempt some bad act against a president, unless the person is totally schizoid, s/he's gotta know it's a suicide attack anyway. If the mind is set on such a macro act, it's cocked, locked and ready to rock regardless the state of security.

Of course Secret Service won't reveal extent of threats to O. It would just encourage those are waiting in the wings to do something dangerous. "Hey, I can be the one millionth person to threaten him!" Sad to realize how racist our country still is.

Sullivan: "They are not. The threats right now in the inappropriate interest that we're seeing is the same level as it has been for the previous two presidents AT THIS POINT [emphasis added]."
I'm not sure this statement contradicts earlier reports that Obama was receiving "unprecedented" threats. It may just be that threats have now fallen back to "normal" levels.

I'd like to know how they are assessing threats. If find it very hard to believe that he isn't getting more threats given the climate out there right now. However, I also find it hard to believe he'd lie under oath. So what is true?

When people are under oath, they're usually selective with their words.
I went back and looked at the transcript. Here's the exchange:
NORTON: I'm asking about this president. And my question is very specific. Given death threats to this president, was there any attempt to increase the security at this event, yes or no?
SULLIVAN: Ma'am, I can't talk about that.
I would be more -- number one, I will address the threats. I have heard a number out there that the threat is up by 400 percent. I'm not sure where that number...
NORTON: Is it up at all? We're not asking for the threat number.
SULLIVAN: Well, I would -- I think it can answer you, ma'am. It isn't at 400 percent. And I'm not sure where that number came from, but I can...
(CROSSTALK)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We can't hear, gentlemen.
NORTON: Please don't assign to me a number in my question. I just asked you if the threats were up. Are the threats up or not, Mr. Sullivan?
SULLIVAN: They are not. The threats right now in the inappropriate interest that we're seeing is the same level as it has been for the previous two presidents at this point.
NORTON: This is very comforting news.

--------------------
He never says that the threats WEREN'T up. Instead, he says that they are not up NOW. [He uses present tense, but the question was initially asked in the past tense; he didn't answer it.]
My interpretation is that they were elevated, but have returned to the levels seen by previous presidents.
I don't think he said anything that contradicts the reporting that the threats against Obama were up.

I think the key statement is the following:
SULLIVAN: They are not. The threats RIGHT NOW [emphasis added] in the inappropriate interest that we're seeing is the same level as it has been for the previous two presidents AT THIS POINT [emphasis added].
Twice, in the same statement, Sullivan emphasizes the PRESENT threat level. I think that was intentional.

I don't think the right really wants an AA Martyr.
LOTS of people from all ethnicity and political persuasions are buying guns because the NRA has convinced them that democrats want to take their guns. If you ever go to a gun show or a gun shop you will see that plenty of very different people are there. There is no horrible increase of racism.
People need to get over that idea. We just elected an AA president for God's sake. The country is LESS racist than ever.
