Jon Stewart last night took down TPM favorite Fox & Friends for using poll numbers on global warming -- more specifically, "climate gate" -- that added up to 120 percent.
[TPM SLIDESHOW: A Catalog Of Fox's Mistakes]
Stewart then zeroed in on host Gretchen Carlson for playing dumb -- even though she was valedictorian of her high school class, graduated with honors from Stanford and studied at Oxford. And plays beautiful classical violin.

As Mr. Spock once said, it is easier for a civilized person to play a barbarian than for a barbarian to play a civilized person. This also applies to smart/dumb people. The dumb blonde act is an easy one for an Oxford alumnus to pull off.

Oxford Alumnus? I don't think so. Being part of the Stanford Oxford program doesn't count.

Brilliant, unlike Gretchen's TV personality.
So far we don't know that she spent any time branding her sorority sister's asses while at Stanford, so while she can appear dumb enough for the FOX "news" audience, she's already too hoity toity to be a GOP president.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fox makes her play dumb so she does show up the stooges she shares that couch with.
I am surprised with her resumé, glad to know there is someone with a brain over there.

However, Fox News never mentions that fact that when Ms. Carlson was a local reporter in Richmond, Virginia, what put her on the map was her well known affair with the married lead-news anchor at the ABC station where she worked. Guess having an affair helps get noticed in Republican/Fox News circles. She ended up going to Dallas after helping to destroy one marriage/family.

You think Kirk Cameron really thinks that evolution would lead to a "croc-o-duck"? People in a cult manipulate people into joining or staying with their cult by doing whatever they have to, including making arguments they know are flawed or just plain playing dumb.

Actually, in Kirk Cameron's case, I believe he and Ray Comfort sincerely are stupid. It's too hard to come up with those kind of arguments if you're sane.

Obviously the modern playing dumb tradition started with Reagan, but where did he get it from? Media analysts like Mark Crispin Miller have argued advertising discovered long ago how to fly under the cognitive radar by acting too dumb for engaged attention, thus speaking directly to the unconscious. Speaking of Stanford, I understand there's a cabal of conservative psychologists there known in the advertising industry as the "depth boys" who orchestrate a lot of this stuff. Might be worth some investigative reporting.
Maybe she knew them and they trained her like the watcher's council training a slayer. Buffy the Fox News Milf.

Years ago, when I was a student at Johns Hopkins, I took classes with Miller. Smart guy but, even back then, he was a conspiracy theorist who tended to see the worst possible motives behind everything.
Sometimes it's smart to be cynical, but Miller was always sure that any opinion that differed from his was naive. I think he would benefit from a willingness to not always know all the answers.

Gretchen I never watch your show but keep up the "good" work. Critiques like this just make my day. I haven't laughed this hard in a while and my laughter coming at your, (Gretchipoos) expense makes it all the more enjoyable!

FOX's 'talking down' to their audience is pretty insulting, of course. But, in this, FOX is putting itself on the vanguard of American Anti-intellectualism, a time-honored political demagogue's practice. I suppose they're taking the advice of H.L. Mencken:
"Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."

If the camera ever panned the audience for this vacuous, doofy nerdnest, it could "explore" a row of cabbage-head, carrot-nose dingbats. Fox is bad, CNN is worse, but Daily Show is the pits.

Nothing new for Gretchen ... she emerged unscathed from an affair with the evening news anchor at WRIC in Richmond, her first station ... whereas he's vanished from the radar. She's the type of smart who pulls out the dumb when it benefits her.

Here's my analysis:
She is an extremely intelligent woman who realized that there's no money in the world of intellectual commentary. So she plays a conservative, dumb blonde. This doesn't surprise me. I've read about Friscoid Michael Savage (who went skinnydipping with Allen Ginsberg, grows herbs, drinks imported beer, etc.). And Ann Coulter (went to 100 Dead concerts, for Chrissakes!) This also applies to Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly (who are less smart than Coulter, Savage, and Gretchen, but still fakes who play right-wing populists for a buck.)
Bottom line: they are FAKES! They are much smarter than their fans, they know their followers are idiots who can be led with a Tabasco sauce laced noodle. But their asinine peasant audience is oblivious to this. They are the ultimate cynics. If $$$ was in the liberal media, you can bet your barrel they'd be just like Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn.

Fox & Friends has always been a silly program, they are not to be taken seriously. The trio seen in the video is actually superior to the long running, Steve,Edie & Brian.
They play to the really naive crowd of "God bless America", "American exceptionalism" crowd. There are probably worse crowds to play to. Maybe.
