Air America announced today that it's declaring bankruptcy and ceasing its live broadcasts immediately. Here's the statement posted on Air America's website:

It is with the greatest regret, on behalf of our Board, that we must announce that Air America Media is ceasing its live programming operations as of this afternoon, and that the Company will file soon under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code to carry out an orderly winding-down of the business.

The very difficult economic environment has had a significant impact on Air America's business. This past year has seen a "perfect storm" in the media industry generally. National and local advertising revenues have fallen drastically, causing many media companies nationwide to fold or seek bankruptcy protection. From large to small, recent bankruptcies like Citadel Broadcasting and closures like that of the industry's long-time trade publication Radio and Records have signaled that these are very difficult and rapidly changing times.

Those companies that remain are facing audience fragmentation as a result of new media technologies, are often saddled with crushing debt, and have generally found it difficult to obtain operating or investment capital from traditional sources of funding. In this climate, our painstaking search for new investors has come close several times right up into this week, but ultimately fell short of success.

With radio industry ad revenues down for 10 consecutive quarters, and reportedly off 21% in 2009, signs of improvement have consisted of hoping things will be less bad. And though Internet/new media revenues are projected to grow, our expanding online efforts face the same monetization and profitability challenges in the short term confronting the Web operations of most media companies

When Air America Radio launched in April, 2004 with already-known personalities like Al Franken and then-unknown future stars like Rachel Maddow, it was the only full-time progressive voice in the mainstream broadcast media world. At a critical time in our nation's history -- when dissent on issues such as the Iraq war were often denounced as "un-American" -- Air America and its talented team helped millions of Americans remember the importance of compelling discussion about the most pivotal events and decisions of our generation.

Through some 100 radio outlets nationwide, Air America helped build a new sense of purpose and determination among American progressives. With this revival, the progressive movement made major gains in the 2006 mid-term elections and, more recently, in the election of President Barack Obama and a strongly Democratic Congress.

Laws have changed for the better thanks to this revival.....but all the same our company cannot escape the laws of economics. So we intend a rapid, orderly closure over the next few days. All current employees will be paid through today, January 21. A severance package will be offered tomorrow to full-time current employees with more than six months of tenure.

We will strive to assist affiliates and partners in achieving a smooth transition. Starting at 6 pm EST today, we will provide our affiliates, listeners and users a selection of encore programming until 9 pm EST on Monday, January 25, at which time Air America programming will end.

We are proud that Air America's mission lives on through the words and actions of so many former radio hosts who are active today in progressive causes and media nationwide. In the years ahead, as we look back, we should all be proud of our passionate determination to assure that our nation's progressive voice would be heard loud and clear. Through the hard work and dedication of current staff, and those who preceded you, a lasting legacy was forged which will now continue through other voices and venues.

Thank you.

No surprise really. They were bleeding cash for years and it only went downhill after Franken left.

Progressive radio rarely succeeds. Oh well, at least we have Rachel Maddow.

I don't really like talk radio of any stripe. Still AA helped launch some important careers (Maddow, Franken, Seder) and it's sad to see it go.

This week keeps getting better and better … what's next, Stevens retires tomorrow and Obama names Cass Sunstein to replace him?

I shouldn't tempt fate …

A great try at a different type of radio. I enjoyed it over the years. There really are no progressive outlets on the major media stations now.

It failed because it was lame. When you lose Al Franken and Rachel Maddow and fire Randi Rhodes and replace them with . . . . Thom Hartman and Lionel for God's sake, of course you're going to have a crummy product. A presenter who can't win an argument with an eggshell, and a presenter who has an excruciatingly annoying voice and isn't even liberal.

AirAmerica also had Amy Goodman, and her show has carried some very good stuff. But yeah, I guess in this country news is "lame" if it isn't presented as entertainmnet.

Amy Goodman wasn't on Air America, so she won't be affected. Maybe you heard an Air America affiliate that carried her show, but I thought she was just on community radio.

Agree with your assessment of Lionel, but Thom Hartman is the smartest guy in any room. His voice will be greatly missed.

I agree that Tom Hartmann is a very smart guy. My commute is so short I never got to listen to him but a few minutes in between the thousand commercials. Same with Ron Reagan in the evening.

And we wonder why our message never gets out. The thugs made sure of it. They control it all. Follow the money.

Thom Hartman, one of the smartest people on the radio, and the planet. Progressive radio alive and well in Portland Oregon. Carl & Christine, Thom, big Eddie, Randi.
KPOJ620. Check it out online.
Unfortunately we also have to claim that wingnut ass hat Lars Larson too. Sorry world.
Be good humans.

I listened to Air America from the beginning and I'll miss some of those programs. I know liberal radio outside Air America is doing just fine, but still, this sucks.

Paul Wellstone said "stand up, keep fighting". Some days it's easy. Some days it takes conscious effort. This is the latter.

I bought and installed 6 XM radio systems for my home, cars and boats...All in order to listen to Air America (and Cubs games.) Those receivers are too light to be used as door stops! Damn!

Chuck, if your XMs will float you've got a good half-dozen keychains suitable for watercraft. (Just trying to be positive. As a Cubs fan, I'm sure you understand.)

"Ceasing live broadcasts"? When did they ever have live broadcasts? Wasn't it the undead spirits of Marx, Stalin, & Mao speaking through zombie vampires like Al Franken & Ralph Maddow, with help from Jennifer Love Hewitt?

And then there's Limbaughanniteabeck, lying 24-7 about the second worst president in history, Reagan, and how much that small piece of shoe wipe gave (NOT) a damn about anyone who hald a job in this country. (W was the worst president, for those keeping score.)

Want to know why the US is in the toilet? Start at Reagan, follow the staff straight through his VP's son, his SecDef, and all the other neocons that rode in on his senile coattails. The only reason to visit the Reagan Library is to dance an irish jig on that old fraud's grave.

Alas, no. James Buchanan was the worst president in American history. Say what one will about Reagan and Dubya (and there's lots to say), the country did not break out into civil war as a direct result of their policies. With Buchanan, it did.

You're confusing Air America with the neo-[strike]Stalinist[/strike], er, conservative cults of personality for Reagan and Dubya. The Republican Party today is far more Stalinist and Maoist than any other American institution. (They only fail to be Marxist because that's actual ideology, and Republicans don't stand for any ideology or principles anymore... If an idea comes from within the tribe, it's good, if not, then not.)

As for the GOP's zombie vampires, that's just a gimme. Actually, I understand a number of them worship a gay Jewish zombie vampire cannibal, but hey.

We can only hope that Clear Channel is next. The way they are losing money and shedding jobs it'll soon just be Limbaugh and a skeleton crew of producers and drug mules.

There is a bright side: Ron Reagan Jr. can no longer prevaricate his father's record of utter destruction.

I understand loving your dad for better or for worse, but soft-peddling war crimes and the systematic destruction of every societal gain America has made since the '40s always rubbed me the wrong way, especially coming from a so-called "stand up" guy. Harsh, but I think he's no better than half-brother Michael. Same coin, although only Junior's the actual fruit of El Icono's loin.

Were it not for the family name, the world would've never heard of Ron Reagan Jr. Or Bonzo, for that matter.

Good god, it's no big deal. It's certainly not in the same category as Republicans taking Ted Kennedy's seat or the Right Wing Supremes giving corporations the greenlight to do whatever the hell they want.

If anybody really cared (or listened), this comment section would be lit. And Amy Goodman's syndicated on Pacifica Radio.

Listen to classical music it will sooth your soul I promise. Start with Horowitz at Home. Get a very nice glass of red wine sit in front of a fire if you have one, chase all noise and people you may live or associate with and turn on the cd. Do not let yourself be disturbed by anything you will feel renewed. I promise.

AM 1090 in Seattle carries many of the same voices minus Ron Reagan. Thom Hartmann's the best.

I hope the podcasts of all AAR shows get saved somewhere for free or cheap downloading because of their powerful info. Seriously, the podcasts are historic -- like the recordings of the late Mae Brussell who fearlessly investigated Nazis, the CIA, JFK's assassination by our secret thug government, etc. And I hope all AAR hosts survive independently like Mike Malloy and Randi Rhodes.

I used to listen to AA all day but as they shot themselves in foot after foot (cancelling Morning Sedition, cancelling Majority Report, screwing Maron and Seder generally, sticking with Lionel when he was obviously a negative force, etc, etc). But for the ast year I haven't listened to them once. Their death now brings nothing but a sigh out of me. Sad opportunity blown.
