Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Robert Mendez just issued the following statement regarding the special election in Massachusetts. Here's the full text.

I have no interest in sugar coating what happened in Massachusetts. There is a lot of anxiety in the country right now. Americans are understandably impatient. The truth is Democrats understand the economic anger voters feel, that's in large part why we did well in 2006 and 2008.

In the days ahead, we will sort through the lessons of Massachusetts: the need to redouble our efforts on the economy, the need to show that our commitment to real change is as powerful as it was in 2008, and the reality that we cannot take a single thing for granted and cannot afford even a second of complacency.

We must be aggressive in defining our opponents and framing the choice voters face. We cannot be timid about staking out our ground and we must be strong in reminding voters the cost of what the Republicans did on their watch and that they remain on the side of Wall Street, and the special interests.

But it is important to keep in mind that today's special election in Massachusetts was just that: a special election, with a whole host of circumstances that are unique. I would caution against taking a single unique election and extrapolating what it means for the midterms ten months away.

Thank God, a Democrat finally says something that's not either "Obama is as bad as Bush!" or "Please, Republicans, don't hurt me."

Obama, at least in terms of regulatory capture, IS worse than Bush.

And I say that as a card-carrying Democrat who campaigned for Obama.

Look at the facts, not what's been turned into a designer label.

And yet another idiot subtly trying to deny that the Obama agenda, particularly health care, is about as popular as Tom Metzger at an NAACP rally. Yeah, you go on claiming that 2008 was an election that gave you a mandate to move the US farther to the left than France. Just get ready to lose a lot of elections. There is no amount of spin that can hide the reasons behind the victory of a Republican in the most liberal state in the union, particularly when Brown ran explicitly on blocking the health care "reform" bill.

Pray tell just what is this leftist agenda?

Ensuring that banks didn't go bust? Ensuring that Detroit didn't go bust? A healthcare bill that has no government control, but is completely within the private sector? A well-funded war in Afghanistan? Extending the Bush tax cuts as part of the stimulus bill? The Obama WH and this Congress are essentially centrist apologists who couldn't push back the battery of lies and garbage about "Marxism," and other nonsense from the right.

For a better translation, just mentally replace everything he says they're not going to do with what they did, and what they're going to do with what they didn't do. Crystal clear.

Time will tell if this "unique election" teaches them not to field idiotic candidates. I doubt it though, because then they'd have to derive some meaning from what happened today.

Menendez's comment is right on the mark. I hope that he and other pragmatic Democrats reign in the polyannas.

Define pollyanna in the context of this discussion, because many people would have no idea what you're talking about.

"Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman"

Shouldn't he step down after this debacle? The title kinda says he's in charge of Dem Senate Campaigns.

Whatever he's doing, it's bad.

I think this situation requires that a really stupid and futile gesture be done on somebody's part (in Teddy's memory).

Give Menendez a Special Olympics medal.

You know I get that the legislative process is slow and I get that people are impatient. What is inexcusable is this:

"We must be aggressive in defining our opponents and framing the choice voters face. We cannot be timid about staking out our ground and we must be strong in reminding voters the cost of what the Republicans did on their watch and that they remain on the side of Wall Street, and the special interests."

THIS should have been done all of last year. Not just by Obama, but also by Dems in congress - liberals, progressives, centrists, conservatives - all should have been relentlessly attacking the GOP. This was the easiest thing they had to get done. So, that's it for finger pointing and I'm not going to waste time venting here and will directly contact the appropriate people/organizations on how I feel. Worth a try.

You think what should have been done all of last year was finger-pointing at the GOP?

What should have been done last year was addressing the issues of regulatory capture head-on. People see banks getting away with near-murder AND get huge bailouts which they claim to have repaid but really haven't (do the math), while small businesses can't even get loans.

But addressing regulatory capture would have meant taking on the banks. And an administration that hires Timmy and Larry is decidedly not interesting in taking a responsible position on banking.

Yes that's what keeps people up all night - regulatory capture!

And yes, yes, yes, the Dems (of all stripes) should have spent a lot more time shredding the GOP! The GOP did NOTHING last year and are gaining momentum - WHY? We did not counter their lies enough.

It does keep them up at night, actually. They don't call it that, but they know they're getting screwed by corporate interests, and the Democratic leadership is just facilitating that.

No, they don't call it regulatory capture when they get bleeped on their insurance premiums, their prescription bills, their credit cards, their loans, their country's bizarre hiring of mercenary forces (Obama now using more "military contractors" than Bush did), or the pollution they have to live amid thanks to lobbying from every sort of manufacturer.

But it is regulatory capture, and while they may not articulate it as such, they know EXACTLY what it is, and they know exactly what Corporate Dem apologists like yourself are.

Exactly. Why can't the Dems frame a simple message? Repeat after me: The republican economic disaster... Republican economic policies destroyed...

The script writes itself.

Exactly what they should be doing! Learning whatever lessons they can from this, and then moving on with the Democratic agenda. Doing anything else would be self-destructive and playing into Repuke hands.

Why should one election cause us to turn against our own? Who got us into this mess in the first place? The Repukes. Who prevents us from getting things accomplished? The Repukes. Don't let them frame this issue, too, as being negative against Democrats.

The tea-baggers have been very effectively screaming their demands for months now. What have we been doing in return? Not those in Congress, not those in the White House - you and me? That's where this battle is being fought. Have you been fighting?

Oh and I don't believe for a second that this loss is the end of Obama's agenda. Don't fall for that silly meme, that's just panic and over hyping. Watch, give it a couple of weeks and you'll start seeing people debunk it - if they haven't already.

Go left, go right, go center?

I say Rahmbama quits playing games and Barry sends Manny out to literally knock the teeth of a DFH down his stinkin throat. You know, as opposed to the metaphorical kick in the teeth Dems have been giving liberals for the last couple decades. Hell, maybe even get Lieberman out there to jump on his throat while he's down.

That'll get those independents and liberal republicans on board. Yeah. That's the ticket.

Yeah these geniuses will run further right. I'd bet my paycheck on it...

We the Dean liberals, the party base, celebrate the defeat of DLC and failure of its president Barry.
(on a side note, TPM has been among DLC cronies for some time, since that WH dinner).
Mendez's blaming the economy is refusing to admit the defeat resulting from DLC's hijacking of the party.
Ignore the base, you will get more of these defeats!

They need to fire Rahm now.

He's not only arrogant, he's incompetent.

The circular firing squad between Rahm and the Coakley campaign today? OUTRAGEOUS.

No true Democrat would continue to tolerate Rahm after this.

BS. It's simply not true that Obama is losing Dems. WaPo just hada big pol. Dems are on board. Independents are weak. Dems are not selling their plans well to independents. Mass is 51% independents.

Odd, I'd read earlier today that minority voters in MA had sat on their hands for this election.

They're not independents. They're Democrats.

But yeah, I agree that Dems, particularly Obama, are not selling their plans well to independents.

The problem is that they're also not selling their plans well to Democrats.

Because their plans aren't actually Democratic. They're corporate giveaways.

Can Obama sell anything? If, he can, what has it been? This week he will meet with Republicans at their retreat -- for what purpose? They will reject everything he attempts. In a week, the nation will listen to another great Obama speech at the State of the Union gathering. Another speech, but no action. How many rude Republicans will insult him that night? Will he push back? Or, will he continue to look for "bipartisanship" and fail?

The dignified and generous approach is just not working. Americans are crude, and you don't get rewarded for decency. Play nice, you lose. People claim they want an end to the rancor and partisanship in DC. But actually if you sucker punch the other guy, they cheer.

And with good reason when the other guy is a Corporate stooge.

People want their leaders to fight for them, not against them.

That's what they'll cheer. Not this bland crap they're getting while they're getting sold down the river.

This guy says the republicans are on the side of wall street. Well for the last year it has been obama and the democrats who have done everything for wall street and the big banks. Obama is much more like Herbert Hoover than FDR.... This election was a clear repudiation of Obama's leadership.

What a suprise those that voted for Brown will have when Wednesday morning comes, and their candidate hasn't solved all their problems, and brought world peace.

It's called buyers remorse, but in two years they can vote for someone else.
