Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch (D) said on Fox News today that though "the vast majority of Muslims" are "not terrorists," there are "hundreds of millions who are."

Of course the vast majority of Muslims, there are 400 million, are not terrorists. But there are hundreds of millions who are. They want to kill every Christian, every Jew, every Hindu who won't convert. And we ought to put it on the table.

This ought to be taken down, since you've misquoted Koch and the misquote is the entire foundation of the article. He says that there are "one billion, 400 million" Muslims and 1.4 billion is indeed around exactly how many Muslims there are.

He states how many muslims he thinks there are.

Notes that he thinks not all are terrorist.

And then he states that there are hundreds of millions of muslims who are terrorists.

Which is complete crap.

Fortunately, or we'd be up to our eyes in blood, not all of it theirs.

Or maybe Koch thinks that any Muslim who may harbor reservations about the US is a terrorist.

Is Koch on crack?

First off: there are 1 billion plus Muslims in the world.

Second, if there were "hundreds of millions" who are terrorists, there wouldn't be an America right now. Or a Europe. Or a Jew left on Earth.

You Might Be A Terrorist If…
1. You really don’t have much use for a tanning bed
2. You own or work in a convenience store / gas station
3. You or any of your relatives live in Detroit
4. You pretty much hate pork chops
5. Christmas isn’t a big deal where you come from
6. You like your women a little on the hairy side
7. You happen to think Al-Jazeera rocks
8. When marriage counseling doesn’t work, stoning is always an option
9. There are no top buttons on any of your shirts
10. When the government’s not threatening to water-board you, they’re trying to hire you as a translator.

So, based on the Bible, you'd similarly say that 75% of Americans, and all christians worldwide, are murderous bigots intent of killing all gays? I mean, I assume you've bothered to read the thing, right?

I'm not here to be an appologist for christians or muslims, but the reality I've observed in my life doesn't really comport with that concept any more or than what I've observed tells me all muslims want to kill all non-muslims simply because the text says so.

Just to make note, here is an impromptu list of the people christians believe they personally should put to death:

anyone who doesn't listen to a priest
gays
sorceresses and fortune tellers
anyone who strikes or curses their parents
adulters and fornicators in general
people who work on saturday

...and here's some good ones that fit the particular conversation about demonizing Islam: nonbelievers and anyone who follows a different religion.

This includes murdering an entire town for it harboring even one person who worships a different religion.

This is christianity by the book. Please, tell me if this is what you observe the general public around you doing in this widely (roughly 75%) christian society.

Okay, can we come back to reality now, and maybe even view Islam from a realistic POV? Please?

Read the bible - it, too, is just as violent against non believers.
The fact is, most Muslims are moderate, and chose not to partake in the extrem parts - AND, like most reasonable christians, they don't take it all literally.
The Taliban and right wing christians are the only ones who take their respective holy books literally, and as a result seem to advocate violence based around their religion. That. and they wish their religion to ontrol the lives of us all.

Kiddo, if you are going to accuse all 1.5 billion Muslims of terrorism because of the Koran, then you must also call all evangelicals who take the bible literally terrorists also.

But yeah, we know: you are inherently good, and all non Americans are inherently evil, so it's not the same...

No, not recently, but I have been reading the Bible....

So Moses said, "This is what the LORD says: 'About midnight I will go throughout Egypt. Every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the slave girl, who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well. There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt—worse than there has ever been or ever will be again. But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any man or animal.' Then you will know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel. (Exodus 11:4-7)
When Sihon and all his army came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz, the LORD our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army. At that time we took all his towns and completely destroyed them—men, women and children. We left no survivors. But the livestock and the plunder from the towns we had captured we carried off for ourselves. (Deuteronomy 2:32‐35)
O Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us – he who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks. (Psalm 137:8‐9)

Give it up. Or admit that on the basis of holy texts, Christians and Jews are just as suspect as Muslims. This is not a comparison you will win.

Might this have been an innocent slip of the tongue? He said, "But there are hundreds of millions who are." Maybe he meant to say, "But there are hundreds of MUSLIMS who are."

If you read that sentence in the context of the entire quote, it seems possible, even probable:

"Of course the vast majority of Muslims, there are [one billion] 400 million, are not terrorists. But there are hundreds of Muslims who are."

At that rate, we'd have been about half a trillion bucks ahead if we just gave every terrorist a billion dollars and told them to STFU.

I have to play devil's advocate here (pun intended)

The House of Islam and the House of War

Islam recognizes as a divine religion and those who do not; politically into dhimmis, those who have accepted the supremacy of the Muslim state and the primacy of the Muslims, and harbis, the denizens of the Dar al-harb, the House of War, who remain outside the Islamic frontier, and with whom therefore there is in principle, a canonically obligatory perpetual state of war until the whole world is either converted or subjugated.

It's only the fundamentalists who take the words in their respective holy books literally, that we have to woprry about.
And it's a fact that due to the resurgence of 'christian' fundamentalism in America over the last 30-odd years, there are far more fundamentalist christians than fundamentalist Muslims.
They got Bush in.
They are responsible forthe deaths of over a million Muslims since 2001.
And, of course, the thousands of Americans they sent into harms way in the name of christian fundamentalism...

There are 1.5 BILLION Muslims on this earth, Jillian - not 400 million! PLEASE correct this TPM - it's not as though the number is arguable...

Koch, that monstrous, despicable hypocrite represents the new Nazis/christioan Taliban hybrid - the right wing christian ala Cheney/Bush: now that Jews are well protected, the hard right have moved on to the other aspect of anti-semitism: Muslims.
They dress it up as this that and the other, but we all know terrorism has nothing to do with this hatred and willingness to commit another holocaust.
Via their anonymity online, many say how they truly feel within theselves - and when it comes to peope who agree with Koch, what is inside is festering hate, ignorance, fear and violence.
They want to kill, lash out, and exorcise their intense self hatred by victimizing an entire people - just like the Nazis did.
The vast majority of republicans and right wingers(none of which are conservatives anymore) actually, seriously believe that ALL 1.5 billion are terrorists, or they want to be. On numerous occassions have I seen the advocacy of 'nuking' every last one.
America's 'christian' hard right have become the new Nazis - we fought against exactly what they represent in WW2, yet the power they have now is to me, utterly terrifying.
They have all but declared a REAL war against Democrats too: by declaring that the fight against Dems will be togher than the 'war in terror', and many other variations of th theme we have heard over recent days, I have no doubt that at least one Glen Beck fan will take this as an explcit instructions to do what they can in the war against Democrats: gun them down. I have no doubt we will see it this year.

Koch is inelegant to say the least. And his math may be worse.
However, it is fair to ask: if a major catastrophe were to hit a US city, would the world's Muslims mourn or rejoice?
We certainly have played a role in fomenting the hatred that is directed against us -- but we cannot dismiss the fact that there are values that are deeply held by most Americans (such as separation of government and religion) that have yet to see the light of day in most of the Muslim world. Calling 100 million people terrorists is not going to help, but neither will denying that Islam may not be compatible with modern Western culture.

Why does it have to be so black and white?
They didn't rejoice over 9/11(the footage shown of Muslims celebrating 9/11 was footage of people celebrating something or other from months previous), neither did they mopurn particularly - understandable to say the least, given that war is something so many in the Middle East have lived with their entire lives - most of it with a firm origin in colonialism.
I don't believe for a second that they would rejoice.
Certainly, a minority will - but an extreme minority, statistically irrelevant - though I have no doubt they will be sought out by Fox and others and prsented as if the rejoicers represent all of Islam.
Nor would they mourn - depending on whom was attacked of course.

The fact is, they have so much going on - disaster upon catastrophe - that an attack half way around the world would barely registaer for most. Until, or course, they are attacked in a racist and extremist fundamentalist 'christian'-fueled revenge war - if the right wing have anything to say about it, anyway.

First, the quote in the story needs to be corrected, because he says that there are 1 billion, 400 million Muslims, as in 1.4 billion Muslims.

The problem is religion. People should read Sam Harris' book "End of Faith." In it, he talks about a worldwide survey of many Muslim countries. The question asked was something like, "Would you always, sometimes, rarely, or never condone the killing of innocent civilians in order to defend Islam?" The results were shockingly high, even in "moderate" Muslim countries like Egypt, and they didn't even poll countries like Lebanon.

The problem is religion. If one sincerely believes that Christians and Jews will go to hell and be tortured with fire for eternity, they probably see themselves as being compassionate and trying to help non-believers out by trying to convert them. Furthermore, since the Koran teaches that Muslims will be greatly rewarded in heaven for fighting for Islam, the results of the aforementioned survey aren't surprising.
