Indonesian officials are considering a petition that calls for a bronze statue in Jakarta of a young Barack Obama to be torn down.
Last month, a bronze statue of Obama was unveiled in Jakarta's Menteng Park. It depicts the U.S. President as a young boy, and commemorates the time he spent in Indonesia as a child.
Now, 55,000 people have joined a Facebook group that calls for the statue to be taken down, citing Obama's failure to "make a significant contribution to the Indonesian nation."
The group also says that "for the dignity of a sovereign nation, Barack Obama's monument in Menteng Park must be removed immediately."
According to parks agency official Dwi Bintarto, Indonesian officials have been "discussing for the past two weeks what to do with the statue... whether to take it down, move it elsewhere or retain it. We're finding the best solution."

And how many of those 55,000 Facebook people are actually Indonesian?
Personally, I think the statue is a tad ridiculous, but it's not as if it's a massive monument erected in front of their parliament or something.

Since facebook is loaded with people who tilt to the right wing extremist wacko fringe, I would make two observations:
I bet less than 1% of that 55,000 are actually Indonesians,
That is a tiny number compared to the usual number of right wing extremist wackos who usually vote on such polls.
This is a non-issue.

This article fails to mention why the local people supported the statue (funded by private donations BTW) -
"Ron Mullers, a Jakarta resident who came up with the idea of the statue and raised money for it, said it was supposed to inspire local children to follow their dreams."
The first article I found mentioning the installation of this statue was from Dec. 8th of 2009 ... by Dec. 10th, Fox news was already running a story about a Face Book Group that opposed the statue. Have to wonder if Fox created this group in the same way they manufactured the "grass roots", Tea Bagger effort.

Your response may have merit is some situations. In this situation, rbeats has proven that he plays fast and loose with facts, so any excuse to ridicule him is fair game.
Also, using extraneous apostrophes is not a typo, it is semi-literacy. Semi-literacy always calls into question the intelligence of the poster.

You seem to be pretty selective: it's okay for statues to be raised in celebration of Barack Obama (whose only accomplishment at this point is his election)...but NOT okay for statues to be cast of George W. Bush, who was elected, at the very least, in 2004.
I, personally, don't think it's a good idea to erect statues of presidents until they've accomplished something worthy of celebration beyond mere election.

If Bush, Nixon, and Buchanan grew up another country, I would imagine they would have statues. Well it still seems to me that a multi-racial boy growing up in Indonesia who ends up getting elected President of the United States is sure as hell something to be proud of. It also is without a question that the election of Obama was a HUGE turning point in the direction of the lone superpower from asshole warmongers to thoughtful peacemakers. That is HUGE! The whole world was thankful.
Oh and Bush was not reelected in 2004 as the many reports of outright fraud in the counting of the votes in Ohio prove beyond a reasonable doubt that had an honest election taken place Kerry would have won Ohio and the Presidency. Read the Rolling Stone article about the massive republican vote counting fraud and you will understand. Bush stole BOTH his terms as president.

He's not being recognized by that statue as a President of the USA, but as a son of Indonesia, adopted but nevertheless a son. They have the records and know the truth about his last name... was it Dunham or was it Obama... before the Indonesian Sorento adopted him? When Sorento married Barack's mom, do those records show the nationality of her son? What name is shown for Barack in Indonesia on his school registration papers? His nationality? His religion? Can't Americans get anything from Indonesia on those items? They tipped the truth by hoisting that statue and must have documents that prompted them to recognize his time and reason for being in their country.

I just know my history. Not the spin taught by partisan professors but the actual history of our country. You should open your mind. Do some research of your own. You might be surprised to learn without the spin facts are quite shocking. The constitution has become less and less relevant since Woodrow Wilson.
In one year our great leader has increased the debt more than any other in history and I doubt this Obama-nation will see any improvement until the corrupt politicians in both parties are long gone.

Funny you "Ass"ume I'm a tea bagger. Never been to a tea party, in fact I vote democrat when deserved. It's a shame some folks have such a closed minds they can't believe a person can think for themselves. Conforming to the opinion of others has never been my thing. As for Cheney being my hero, there you go “ass”uming again. He and Bush did keep us safe, which I can’t Obama will. However, as I stated, I don’t conform to anyone else’s way of thinking. The only hero in my life is my father, a man who was willing to give his life for the freedom of America. Having been blessed with parents who taught me the importance of ethics as well as solid family values (both of which are harder to find these days), I don’t need to rely on anyone else’s opinion.
From your assumptions of me, I’m guessing you follow the uber left and believe that the stimulus is working. Then again why wouldn’t you with all the thousands of people it helped employee in the numerous non-existing districts. Oh and course I can’t forget all the “saved” jobs.(what a joke) Hmmm I bet you’re one of those people who idolize mass murders such as Mao?
I’m sorry, that wasn’t fair. You may not be as out of touch as your response implied. Either way, you might try doing a little research using fact-based material. I know it’s hard to find with all the right and left propaganda out there but there’s good material available. I recommend you start with the constitution.
Once you find the fact for yourself, you’ll be able to understand that a person doesn’t have to be a tea bagger to expect accountability. You might find free thinking a lot more fulfilling than sitting around drinking the Kool-Aid with all the other conformists.

Are you referring to the 9/11 victims? At that time the entire country was caught off guard with an attach on our homeland. Bush and Cheney immediately recognized it as a declaration of "war" on our country. Not a man made disaster. Unlike our current leaders, granting the terrorist (oops enemy combatants) the same American Civil Rights our troops are dying in the "overseas contingency operation" to protect. Nor did they provide attorneys paid for my American tax dollars. I feel quite sure Al Qeda and their followers are "ROFL" at the weakening of our current commander and chief.
I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I don't base my opinion on "republican" talking point. I'm not a party follower. I voted and was pleased with Clinton. My points come from my own research and conclusions. Apparently, that is a new concept to you. Really, you should try it time. You would probably spend less time "ROFL". Nah, you would have to open your mind for that to happen and recent experience tells me that you lefties are either unwilling or incapable of such an endeavor.

Yeah, weird. Nowhere in America do they honor childhood home towns of famous people.
Besides everywhere, that is.

Indonesia, good for you. It is right to exhibit a statue of Barry Dunham Sorento. Kenya should put one up with the name Barack Hussain Obama. Then, if there are any MORE courageous people in either country, you could show the citizens of the USA the BIRTH CERTIFICATE, THE SCHOOL REGISTRATION DOCUMENTS, THE PASSPORT ENTRY/DEPARTURE RECORDS, because the mystery guy in our Oval Office has hidden them from USA citizens. USA citizens have to deal with troops of attorneys the guy in our Oval Office hired to keep us from getting access to those records... now, if you guys would be brave and toss those records on the internet, you would be going around ALL governments, and would become real, appreciated friends of US CITIZENS. SHOW US THE RECORDS that gave you reason to build and display that statue, Indonesia, and SHOW US THE RECORDS that gave you reason to claim the mystery guy as one of your own, Kenya.
Americans can't seem to get the job done, here in the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Hold on to YOUR courage and KEEP that statue up. We may just send the real item back to you.
CONGRATULATIONS on making a visual statement in such a creative and thoughtful way!!!
YOU "got 'er done", as some of us say, here.

Simple Answer: Announce that every person who wants the statue torn down can fill out a basic form requesting this at local town halls in Indonesia. Then let's see how many facebookers show up.

poor poor poor man/woman... you don't even have an ounce of respect in your entire body to refer to the man in the Whitehouse as our Honorable PRESIDENT OBAMA!!!!!!!!!! yet you can spew your venom online in dribbles of hostility towards one of the most brilliant, compassionate humans ever to walk in the foots of his/our ancestors... you think you know about American History? Spare me or tell us about what YOU HAVE DONE TO THE POOR AND DOWNTRODDEN OF THIS NATURE... better yet let's discuss your ancestors owing mine and President Obams's - and beating us mercilessly into submission so that we may build "your" country from the ground up - you hateful piece of FILTH... I pry for you to become a true "mench" - a loving individual who can and will GIVE PEACE A CHANCE AND HOPE... you really loved the condition your bushman left this country in? and you blame our Beloved President Obama for the state of affairs we're in today? you need a true LIFE LESSON IN THE FACTS!!! I hope you can get over yourself tho i realize that's an impossibility because it's probably been inbred in you from your hateful ancestors - and lastly, YOUR TRUE PROBLEM WITH MY AWESOME PRESIDENT IS THE COLOR OF HIS BEAUTIFUL SKIN - WHICH IS THE COLOR OF MINE...GORGEOUS CARAMEL - what color is yours? pasty white? i am certain that you hate him because he is different from you and yours - not because he is TOO BRILLIANT! get a "new" life theme and be happy..God Bless America even the hatefilled racists!!!!!!!! He is YOUR PRESIDENT TOO...

What's wrong with being "pasty white?" I'm a caramel colored person myself,(perhaps even a bit darker) but I don't agree with President Barack Obama, or respect him that much. The way you wrote it, it seems like you're trying to imply that being white and disagreeing means that the person in question is a racist. I'm the same color he is, and the same color you are. I don't agree with him on a lot of things. I didn't vote for him. I wish he wasn't the president.
As far as the article is concerned, Indonesia can do what it wants with the statue. It's their statue and their decision. It doesn't really affect me.

justme is one sick puppy full of anger and jealousy over a black intellectual having been elected to lead a once pasty white country. Forgive him for he knows not what he speaks. He's just another ill informed teabagger voting against his own interest because talking heads (rush limpballs, insannity, loony beck and the whole faux no news crowd) tell him to.

A Facebook "petition" gets prompt attention from the Indonesian government?
And how much "contribution" is an American President supposed to make to Indonesia?

Something is fishy here...
Considering that this has been a Facebook protest and one of a very small count, why would a nation even begin to consider anything such a group recommends?
What has happened between this month and the last that makes Indonesians believe the statue was a mistake?
Nope, something's not quite right about all of this...

Indonesia spends a bunch of money to build a statue, then a month later it wants to take it down? Sounds like they have bigger problems than dealing with Facebook protest groups.

this is ridiculous...did obama ask these nimwits to put up a statue in his honor? why are they crying foul b/c he is not sending a handout their way? geesh...take the crap down and be done with it....i fail to see how it enhances or take away from obama in any significant way! a non-issue for most folks...
on another note--if the comments here are any indication, obama is in serious trouble. all is not lost though....he and his wussies in washington can still make this right...my only concern is unless obama gives his blood, nothing he does will ever be enough...all other presidents before him can err, but he is expected to be GOd himself and turn water into wine within a year. why? because he had the audacity to become the first black president, so in order to prove his worth, he has to freaking on walk on water...
get to it Obama...sing a jiggle and part the red sea ...rolling eyes.>>>> UNbelievable!!!

soooo very interesting that the only thing you could respond to in my earlier post was the "pasty white" comment - hey my gorgeous Mother is pasty white and she is definitely not a RACIST!!! What you really needed to respond to was your utter lack of respect for a brilliant POTUS! you don't have to "like" him and you didn't have to vote for him - we do and we did - yes we can have an Awesome President such as Mr. Obama! so very sorry for you that you wish he wasn't our President - would you truly deeply sincerely want it to be Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin? good luck with that... not gonna happen... So, alas, my final comment/point is this: work with what you've got instead of merely spewing forth the bile and hate that got us into this segregated racist nation that we exist in today - never has a presidency been so thoroughly polarized as with this Black Man's Election to the White House!!!! and it is because of the likes of you... you truly need to discuss / talk about "resolutions"... and/or "alternatives" instead of just putting down a fellow human being who had the balls, etc. to step up to the plate and challenge the status quo - for, on and behalf of ALL OF US!!!! you are a loser in the "human" race... but God Bless you and yours...Peace on Earth!

I responded to the "pasty white" comment because I thought it implied something. You seem to be saying now that it didn't imply what I thought it did, so I'll leave it alone. I'm not spewing forth hate in my comment. I was just stating that I'm black person and I didn't want President Obama to be the President. I don't recall putting down President Obama apart from saying that I wish he wasn't President. I am aware that there is no chance of McCain becoming president. I can deal with that, and clearly I have to. I believe I'm allowed to not approve of President Obama being President. In America, we are allowed to have opinions and express them. There is really no need to call me a loser for expressing my opinion. You certainly pulled no punches expressing yours.

Leave it up and will one of you please create a "leave it up" page/cause on Facebook. I'm too busy to do it, but would join it, fan it and spread it. Leave the cute little statue in a park up.
