Pat Robertson, a Christian televangelist, speaking today about the devastating earthquake in Haiti, said Haitians had collectively "sworn a pact to the devil," which brought on the country's extreme poverty and the earthquake.
"Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French ... and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you will get us free from the French.' True story. So the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal.'"
"Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another," Robertson said, referring to the country's poverty.
Robertson was speaking on the Christian Broadcast Network during a drive by the network, which he founded, to raise money for disaster relief.
"They need to have, and we need to pray for them, a great turning to God. And out of this tragedy I'm optimistic something good may come. But right now we're helping the suffering people and the suffering is unimaginable," he said.
About 80 percent of Haiti's population is Catholic, but many Haitians also practice voodoo, another monotheistic religion.
Watch:
In 2005, Robertson suggested that Hurricane Katrina was brought on by the legalization of abortion.
Late update: A spokesman for Robertson released a statement aiming to clarify what he meant.

Remember this guy was a spiritual advisor to Bush.
Also remember, he is a Christian and is highly regarded among many powerful people in the United States.
This is why in the 21st century people like this should be mocked, ridiculed, and relegated to a street corner selling pencils from a cup.

You all know what the REAL issue is for Robertson?
Robertson is afraid his sheep will send their tithes to suffering people in Haiti, instead of to his 300 Club.
Yes, I meant "300", it was a jab, not a gaff.
If you want to know a whole lot more about the historical legacy of what has become our modern-day televangelist, read what Jesus said about the Pharisees. Eerily prescient, as if he were talking through those vipers-of-old to the televangelist snakes of today.
Here's my favorite examples;
Matthew 23; but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.
4"(C)They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.
5"But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments.
6"They (G)love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men.
and further on;
14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour widows' houses, and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive greater condemnation.]
15"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one (Q)proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of (R)hell as yourselves.
Just rewrite this with "radio preachers and televangelists" in place of "scribes and Pharisees."
Especially that part about making long prayers just for show, and the part about devouring widows' houses.
Robertson and his ilk depend on scared, lonely people, widows AND widowers, for their easy money.
When something like an earthquake in Haiti comes along, it causes their own collection plates to diminish, and that is what really matters to the Robertsons.
They don't want to share the widow's mite with a suffering world.

Quite the contrary -- Robertson proves the Devil is alive and well and livingin the hearts and minds of extremists and bigots. What we have to hope for is that Robertson proves the existence of the Devil, which by inference proves the existence of God.

Robertson, Falwell (God forgive his soul), and Dobson are at their core old Southern racist preachers. I know Dobson is only the son of a preacher. When that became taboo after the 60s, they turned their speach to Communism. When the Soviet Union collapsed they turned to abortion and homosexuality. Watch out for these guys. The want to kill off American democracy and replace it with "Spiritual Aristocracy", with Robertson or Dobson as the American Christian Right Ayatollah.

Dear Pat Robertson,
Where can I find these Devil archives you source? Is there a contract I can read made between the Devil and the Haitians? At the negotiating table, was collective bargaining in good faith on both parties? Was there a lead negotiator on the part of Haitians, why would any negotiator agree to unpredictable natural catastrophes if it meant freedom? I was also wondering if I could have the contact info to the Devil so I can fact check, and write an objective article on why you suck.
Another thing I'm not very clear on, why is making a deal with the devil to rid of French colonialism precipitate poverty and earthquakes? Did the Haitians include a homosexual clause that would have prevented this earthquake?
Plate tectonics isn't god being mad about deals he should have won no bid.

Er... Kind of a quibble, but I don't think Voodoo could be described as monotheistic, since it involves worshiping a bunch of different deities? You could also probably argue that the syncretic form of Catholicism practiced there, in which saints serve as stand-ins and doubles for the old West African gods, is defacto a polytheistic strain.

no, Vodou is monotheistic, and many practitioners are Catholic and believe in the Christian God. The divinities of the Vodou pantheon are more like "saints" or "angels" as the Haitians describe them.

Voudou is definitely not monotheistic. The "saints" are not like the Catholic saints at all. There is a supreme being but it doesn't get involved with humans. People worship and pray to the lesser dieties.

There is a current in the traditional, god fearing, puritanical, christian mind set that if something bad happens to someone, it's because they are being punished by god and so it's fine to heap more abuse on the downtrodden in the name of religion. The problem is that those who do are not followers of the mythical Jesus who counseled love and forgiveness, who consorted with former prostitutes and persons of questionable repute. It's time to rip the masks off of these "whiten sepulchers" as the mythical Jesus called them. The righteous rich who spit upon the poor and trot out their bibles to prove their virtue.

RE: "A Pact To The Devil"
FROM WIKIPEDIA: ...According to a 2 June 1999, article in The Virginian-Pilot,[18] Robertson had extensive business dealings with Liberian president Charles Taylor. According to the article, Taylor gave Robertson the rights to mine for diamonds in Liberia's mineral-rich countryside. According to two Operation Blessing pilots who reported this incident to the state of Virginia for investigation in 1994, Robertson used his Operation Blessing planes to haul diamond-mining equipment to Robertson's mines in Liberia, despite the fact that Robertson was telling his 700 Club viewers that the planes were sending relief supplies to the victims of the genocide in Rwanda. In response to Taylor's alleged crimes against humanity the United States Congress passed a bill In November 2003 that offered two million dollars for his capture. Robertson accused President Bush of "undermining a Christian, Baptist president to bring in Muslim rebels to take over the country." At the time Taylor was harboring Al Qaeda operatives who were funding their operations through the illegal diamond trade...

Robertson is the perfect example of a christian conservative. He names the people(non-whites) who yearned to be free from slavery and colonialism as the bad guys and now their descendants are getting their just desserts.
He sees the earthquake as god's punishment and not as an opportunity for human beings to be god-like in their compassion for fellow humans.
If Dante's Inferno did exist, Robertson and his judeo- christian and muslim counterparts are even past the lowest rung of hell, these are the epitome of evil. They incite hate in god's name.

Really? You know the context of the "God Damn America" remark, right? Because America allowed black people to be enslaved for a whole lot more of our history than they've been free? Because even after they were 'free' America allowed them to be segregated in inferior schools, limited them in employment, kept them out of restaurants and shops, did not let them buy homes in many neighborhoods, and on and on?
And that equates to someone saying that LITERALLY a whole country made a pact with the Devil and that's why thousands and thousands of them have died in a natural disaster?
Really?

When I was younger, I was forced to tolerate the 700 Club every day; my mother had it running on TV much like many folks today have Fox News running in the background. I thank God to this day that mom eventually came to her senses and stopped watching that crap.
To think that quite a few Americans actually voted for this jerk to be POTUS sickens me.

I suspect one of Pat Robertson's ancestors may have been the commanding general of French forces during the slave rebellion in Haiti.

It's even worse. In Iowa in 1988 he came in second place behind Bob Dole and AHEAD of then Vice-President George H. W. Bush.

Robertson needs to be taken out and beaten. This is the quickest way i know to get him to see his God.
Then God will throw him in the pit of eternal torment.
The right is going to keep pushing until they get what they want. Sooner or later you will have to confront them with guns or they will drag the country to fascism.

Isn't it rather horrifying to assume that god's will for the Haitians was to remain in slavery?
What a smug tool.

Robertson/Limbaugh: Spawns of their own HATE
HOW DOES ONE EXPLAIN COMMENTS LIKE THESE FROM MR. LIMBAUGH AND MR. ROBERTSON?
Opportunism: They are taking advantage of the crisis.
Racism: They barely disguise their distaste for those who are not white.
Narcissism: They are the God of their own universes.
Disgusting behavior no matter how you try to understand it. Rush makes $44 million a year. Did he offer one penny yesterday? Robertson is the titular head of an evangelical organization, did he pledge assistance?
Imagine saying the words "humanitarian" and "compassion" in tones dripping with disdain. And where is the GOP in all of this. What do those who the GOP looks to as representatives of their thinking have to say/do for the leaders of Mr. Lincoln's party to rebuke him.
LIKE MARLEY AND SCROOGE, LIMBAUGH AND ROBERTSON CARRY MILES OF CHAINS ABOUT THEIR NECKS THEY HAVE FORGED FOR THEMSELVES.
CREEPY! CONTEMPTIBLE!

God The Father nor Jesus The Christ needs Pat Robertson to speak for them. Who is Pat Robertson in the eyes of God. For they speak for themselves. Dust off your Bibles and read Matthew 24:7-8. There is Jesus answer to this event. We in America will also see our share of sorrows and death as well in the days ahead. For God is real and Jesus does not lie and those of us who know our God and keep his commandments will die for our faith at the hands of those who will put us in the same company of Mr. Robinson who is not one of us (Matthew 24:9). He is deceived and Satan is using him to inflame you against the one true God he does not even know. So don't you be deceived by a instrument of Satan and this world into thanking this so called Pastor's opinion is of God for it is not. Pray for the families in Haiti and your own. Peace to all and may those of you whom God has and will call to the truth be spared the wrath of Satan that is coming on the whole world. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you all.

It's an interesting little tidbit, but all of those 'signs of the end times'? They've pretty much been true of every period in history.
Remember, none shall know the hour. If you believe, be prepared at all times, but do not expect to see it coming. Those who believe that they will know when the time is nigh deceive themselves into believing they will have time to prepare. Stop looking for signs and portents, stop trying to see the end coming. Simply live your life in such a way as to be as ready as you can at all times. After all, for all you know, you could be hit by a bus beforehand.

Yes, you are correct we do not know the day or the hour, Matthew 25:13 but we are to know the time of the end. For Jesus starts that sentence with the command to “Watch therefore”. What about Daniel 12:4, are you denying we are in these times? "Many shall run to and fro and knowledge shall be increased". Has that not happened in the last 100 years and Knowledge has accelerated greatly in the last 50 years, doubling in just years and not decades. What about the Parable of the fig tree Matthew 24: 32-35? Verse 34 does he not say “this generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled”. How about 2 Timothy 3:2 , are you saying men of our day are not like this? What are you saying? Where did this come from? “Those who believe that they will know when the time is nigh deceive themselves into believing they will have time to prepare”. Or this “Stop looking for signs and portents, stop trying to see the end coming”. Where in the Bible did you get this? You are in error sir not I. The people deserve the Word of God as proof of your statements not your opinion.

"French buccaneers established a settlement on the island of Tortuga in 1625. ... The occupation of Haiti lasted until 1934. The U.S. occupation was ..." You mean Pat that all the innocents that were born today are under the same pact? You also believe that murdering babies is okay? If you ask me your in league with the Devil. Jesus Psalm 139 "I knew you before you were knit in your Mother's womb." Archbishop Fulton Sheen coverted Bella Dodd to the Catholic religion. She was an agent for Joseph Stalin. Ms. Dodd told him that Stalin told his communists agents that communism would never succeed with the Catholic Church around. She said he sent agents all over the world to pick up "street people" (they would love to have a room, board and small salary), he told them to make sure they had no morals and no vocation to the priesthood. They trained these agents to teach them how to get into the seminarys' and how to behave to become priests and that is who (Mr. Theologian up there, the Devils Pact), is talking about. Stalin and agents ordered these men to create Havoc in the Church after becoming priests. That is what they did at great cost to some of our Children. I never knew a Catholic Priest that would hurt a child and I grew up around them with my four brothers and two sisters and often talked with them alone. Now I know heretics in The Church and I am reporting them for what they are teaching and we will clear them all out also. Learn about your religion, you will be so surprized; countless miracles have happened in the Catholic Church. If you feel it dying now then it is our fault. We need to be educated on our faith before we find fault with it. Watch EWTN, try it you will learn something.
