A new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll shows that voters are ready to listen to either party's case when choosing who will run the Congress this year. That's bad news for Democrats, who have been favored by the electorate in national congressional polls since 2003.

The poll shows voters split 41-41 on which party should control Congress after the 2010 elections, with 18% "unsure." NBC/WSJ polling from as recently as July showed Democrats with a 7-point edge on the question. Since that time, support for Democratic control has steadily declined, though the poll released today was the first that showed voters tied on the question since Dec. 2003.

Voters are not as divided on President Obama, according to the poll. He still enjoys high personal approval ratings, with 64% of respondents saying they approve of him as a person. That number drops dramatically, however when voters were asked to consider him as a politician. Fifty-four percent said they approve of him as a leader, and just 41% said they approve of "his stands on issues."

It's not all rosy for Republicans either. Sixty four percent of respondents to the poll said they disapproved of the way the GOP in Congress has health care reform, a central issue for the Republican party as the election year unfolds.

The country has had it's memory surgically removed.

A cautionary tale, ya'll: you've gotta keep procuring quality candidates, pushing for new and interesting ideas and issues. You cannot take a year off and let "the experts" handle it (or you get "Rahmmed"). People have short memories, short fuses, and even shorter attention spans.

A shark is a voracious hunter, but it dies if it doesn't keep moving forward!

There's no spinning a crappy economy. The Democrats have to make the economy less crappy. If unemployment is down by election day, it won't be awful. If it remains at 10%, it will be dreadful. People don't trust the Republicans apparently, but they're the only other big party, so they'll get the protest votes. I hope democrats go hard at campaigning and let Coakley be a lesson. If we can go after any Republican seat, they can do it to us.

Beware. Look at responses for F4 & F5 on this survey.

There's a bunch of so-called 'conservatives' hiding themselves with the 'independent' label.

Admittedly, there's not a lot of good news out there for Democrats right now...

But, stating that the Republicans "have momentum" based on this poll is disingenuous. When NBC/WSJ did their poll in April 2009 (earliest point the "Democrats/Republicans" question was asked after Obama was inaugurated), Republicans stood at 39%. They now stand at 41%. So, they've seen a whopping 2% change over the course of the year! Talk about momentum!

Democrats should understand that there seems to be no substantive shift, based on this poll, to the Republicans. Instead, there has been disillusionment with Democrats over the course of the year. [Democratic ratings dropped from 48% to 41% over the aforementioned time period.]

Thus, while this poll does support the assertion that Democrats are "losing steam," waning Democratic support shouldn't be perceived (as many in the media are doing) as being inversely proportional to a Republican "surge" or Republican "momentum." Objective data, specifically data from this poll, simply doesn't support that notion.

This is bullshit. The thugs are excellent at distorting the message and if anyone has forgotten, let me remind them that the conservatives/big money still control the media and the message. They control the radio waves and television. Make no mistake about it. I do wish the dems were better at it - we need more Alan Graysons out there but alas, I doubt we will find too many like him. Even with more Graysons there is only so much we can do.

Yes, the economy is grim but I find it very difficult to believe that anyone who voted for Obama believed he could turn this country around in a year.

Well, they certainly expect him to run it off a cliff in one year.

The teabaggers did, but they're GWB's 29 percenters, so their judgment is already proven defective.

So I guess the graphics accompanying this post is implying that the GOP owes its momentum to ... Michael Steele? What up?

It's so stupid to continue to report 'polls' about who supports healthcare reform, when it's NOT DONE YET! How can people have an opinion about a bill that's not complete. All the poll will represent is confusion and frustration about the fact that it's not complete.

It's guaranteed that you won't find anyone who is 'happy' that they are denied coverage, coverage costs more than their mortgage per month, they can't afford basic coverage for themselves or their family, they have to pay over $5k for prescriptions along with paying the monthly premium, or who has or is about to loose their home or file bankruptcy because of healthcare costs.

Adults are like kids where the parent tells them they will buy them a new iPod, but will take them to the store 'real soon'...just hang in there. No matter how patient the kid is, after a year the kid is going, "where is my f*cking iPod???"

Jesus H. Seriously? The Rethuglicans run this country into the ground for the past 8 years and already the American public has amnesia? SERIOUSLY?

I swear that Western Europe is running in one direction while we head the other way.

I have dual citizenship with Great Britain. May have to think about using it. Ridiculous.
