Fox News took advantage of today's East Coast blizzard to prove some point or other about Al Gore on Cavuto this afternoon. Guest host Eric Bolling did color commentary as a copy of Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" was placed outside Fox News HQ to prove, it seems, that today's record-breaking snowfall that shut down infrastructure in at least three major cities proves that Gore's climate change warnings are without merit.

"Poor Al Gore," Bolling told viewers as the snow piled up around Gore's book on air. "We should get a camera outside his house."

Video after the jump.

finally! the deniers are coming around and accepting the fact that "global warming" and "climate change" are going to result in wet climates experiencing a dramatic increase in precipitation and arid areas are going to dry out further.

chart: http://scottgast.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/2099_waterprojection2.jpg

succinct statement of the effect: http://www.wri.org/publication/content/7691

A study conducted in 2005 has broad implications for future global precipitation variance, suggesting that several regional precipitation trends can already be detected and will likely increase in the future due to climate change. In particular, wet regions are increasingly experiencing higher levels of precipitation, and arid areas are witnessing reduced levels and becoming drier.

Dore, Mohammed H.I. “Climate Change and Changes in Global Precipitation Patterns: What Do We Know?” Environment International 31(8): 1167-1181 (October 2005). Available online 25 May 2005 at www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/01604120

Dore compiles and reviews regional and continental levels of precipitation and is able to draw conclusions regarding rainfall patterns. He attributes the precipitation patterns and variance to climate change and ocean currents. In addition, he links precipitation variance with global food availability and states that food security will be hit hard by climate change.

Implications: Changes in precipitation are one of the expected impacts of climate change. This study suggests the changes are already observable – and are likely to intensify with additional warming. Further changes in precipitation patterns (both in intensity and variability) will require communities increasingly to control for drought and flooding. Implications for food availability, particularly in drought or flood-prone areas, could be significant.

god, what a bunch of morons.

Also the Pentagon commisioned a reporty on the National Security issues related to Global Warming, and the report said temperatures in places like DC and NY (and similar places in Europe and China) could see a 5 to 10 degree drop in tempuraturs, a great cooling, due to the distruption of the global water flow (I.E gulf stream)

Google

"An Abrupt Climate Change Scenario and Its Implications for United States National Security,"

A PDF will come up. Its long and has pretty charts. So don't expect any editors from Faux news to read it.

Consider yourself standing in the middle of a simple lever with a fulcrum in the middle (or a "See Saw" if you're talking to a Fox News viewer). You are perfectly balanced. Suddenly some weight is placed on one side of the lever which causes it to pitch the other side up. You attempt to run to the high side to counterbalance the force and end up running too far. To compensate you quickly move in the opposite direction allowing the force of the weight to push its side back down. (Rinse and Repeat)

Now imagine that the weight on one end is constantly being added to. The steps you take to compensate for that effect become increasingly erratic because there is no predictable counterbalance or center of gravity.

This is what's happening as we continue to spew greenhouse gasses (the weight) into our atmosphere (the lever). The Earth (you) has many complex systems intending to balance out these effects, which leads to increasingly extreme weather (extreme heat/cold, storms, drought, etc), however if we don't stop weighting the load, eventually it weighs more then we do and then simply put...that's all folks.

I hope Fox holds Gore's book off the coast of Antarctica as ice chunks break off and swap it. Or they hold it up when it's 100 degrees in the middle of summer and people are dying because of warming...

On May 19, the mercury reached 97 degrees at the Twin Cities International Airport in Minnesota. This was the warmest temperature recorded in the Twin Cities for so early in the season. It wasn't even summer.

By Fox-logic, this will prove global warming. Although they have proven time and time they can hold inconsistent beliefs, I doubt they will draw that conclusion.

I first saw him in a TV sketch comedy show, the name of which I forget. I was made in Seattle. I knew he was funny, so it took me a while to realize he was serious about the science part. Of course, anyone ever seen Neil Degrasse Tyson on Nova Science Now? Scientist and comedian are apparently not mutually exclusive.

So-called climate change & global warming have been dismissed as bunkum, snake-oil science, doctored data, fear-mongering, and a con game by thoughtful, intelligent people with carefully considered opinions. Meanwhile, Fat Albert Gore sits in front of a roaring fire in his mansion, while cars pile up in snowbanks on the Interstate. Mmmmbbwwaaahahahahahaha.

The medium is the message, and in this case the problem. Italy has Europe's worst TV addiction, with 80% of the population knowing what they know through TV. And Silvio Berlusconi, the guy who owns the TV station, is the prime minister. Most of us don't have time to go to study permafrost change in Northern Siberia, monitor perennial ice off western Antarctica, or get a PhD in geophysics. We just get our knowledge from TV, along with reinforcement of commodity and authority fetishes and our beliefs about climate change.

Funny that Fox neglected to mention the fact the arctic sea ice melt anomaly has broken records three times already this year. I guess that would have diluted their message.

What isn't funny is the right wing pr guy launching the propaganda aka the Fox "news anchor". One shudders to think what sort of person would find that mode of presentation appealing and bolstering. I guess some people need to feed their hate and pride is all and they aren't very bright to begin with so they have to be spoon fed through the tops of their tiny wrinkled skulls.

Ezra Klein made a good point yesterday that global warming theories says that the earth should get wetter. Big snow storms are a combination of lots of precip and freezing temperatures. Thus what's unusual about the DC snow storms is not that it is below freezing (not even that cold actually) but there is so much water in these storm systems.

Global warming = wetter weather = more intense rain and snow storms

That said, the theory only points to a macro trend, and it would be impossible to point to any single event and blame it on climate change. We're talking about big climate changes over the next century, not every little blip along the way.

It's well documented that relatively relatively warmer climates get more snow than relatively cold climates. Nashville gets more snow than the South Pole. Barrow Alaska gets less snow than Chicago. The reason, as has been stated here and elsewhere, colder climates are dryer, and hotter climates are wetter. It's as simple as that. You need moisture to have precipitation, no matter how cold or warm it is, and warmer climates have more atmospheric moisture.

Anyone who lives in Buffalo or Syracuse or Rochester can tell you about lake effects snow, which is a regular feature on their weather reports.

I am amazed at the willfull ignorance--they can't be that stupid, can they?--of the political climate skeptics.

The Straight Dope--a great website, btw--has a great summary of this from 2002, written well before this aggressive stupidity on Fox about climate.

We've all had our snarling fun with Fox "News", now, but we need to get serious for a moment and fully understand what we're looking at, here:

The whole "weather" vs. "climate" thing was explained to the public years ago, when no one less than Matt Drudge first tried to launch a joke about cold weather, at the expense of "Al Gore". At the time, he was swiftly smacked-down by dozens of critics, as being ignorant, and the whole premise went away. As I said, this was a closed issue years ago.

So think: wouldn't the Fox folks sort of know that what they're doing now is dishonest? By jiminy, they sure as tootin' would.

So, why are they doing it?

It's called doubling-down. It means "when you're wrong, stay wrong", until the sheer ubiquitosity of the zombie lie wins by default and the sheer weariness of those in the Reality-based world to debate abusurdity, any longer.

Whose m.o. has this always been? A certain, porcine Fox "News" commentator's, that's who.

Who has allegedly "retired"; or at least, stepped out of the public spotlight as a working political consultant. Funny though, we see his fingerprints on so much, these days... and yet, no Karl...

Anyone here a climate scientist? My recollection of basic earth science and the geo-science classes I took in college is that global warming theory predicts that heavy winter snow is exactly what you would expect in temperate latitudes such as the U.S. occupies.

To elaborate, just as low-pressure air (warmer air) sucks high-pressure air (colder air) in to give us weather patterns, the same principles operate on a larger scale in the earth's climate system. Cold, high pressure air circulates from the poles to the warm, low-pressure equatorial zones. An even larger system distributes and equalizes temperature between the north and south hemispheres. Noow, 2009 was the hottest year on record in the southern hemisphere, according to the NASA GISS survey. So it makes sense that in the global climate system, colder air would tend to flow south to equalize the heat. So the fact that we're getting heavy snow here in the northern hemisphere (yes, it's all over the temperate latitudes of the north right now) seems indicative of a very hot summer in the south right now.
