Jenny Sanford, the estranged wife of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, told Barbara Walters in an ABC interview that her husband insisted they take the fidelity clause out of their marriage vows.
"It bothered me to some extent, but ... we were very young, we were in love," she said. "I questioned it, but I got past it ... along with other doubts that I had."
She called the marriage a "leap of faith."
The interview will be aired this Friday on 20/20, the day her book is set to be released. She announced she was filing for divorce in December.
Mark Sanford was embroiled in a scandal last year after he admitted to visiting a lover in Argentina, after he disappeared from the state and telling his staff he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

"moralistic cretins"
You do realize that is something of an oxymoron?
Sanford is the hypocrite, not because he cheated on his wife, but because he ran on family values.
The "moralistic cretins" who believed in his "fidelity" enough to vote for are his victims, too.
And I mean that generically, not just matrimonially, fidelity goes way beyond marriage. It goes to the character of the person, not just their family relationships.
Romath, as long as apologists like you are willing to overlook that lack of personal fidelity in Republicans, but dog-pile on Dems, or anyone, for the same infidelity of character, you just compound the hypocrisy.

BF, if you haven't been paying attention to US politics for the last coupla decades, politics of personal destruction are real and often have consequences. You may think a particular detail is droll, but it can definitely shape opinions and translate to the ballot box. At one point, "family values" and "character counts" were held out as reasons for voters to elect candidates over their competition. Seeing the rest of the story unfold is of note, especially to those of us who remember and can put it in context.

The problem is, those voters who are capable of remembering the context and using it to interpret sordid details of Sanford's infidelity are the same voters who weren't likely supporting his "family values" positions in the first place.
To put it another way, Republican hypocrisy doesn't really change the votes of those who were already predisposed to vote Republican. For all their insistence that character matters, when it comes to the individual candidates, it really doesn't.

Let me see if I can pry your tiny brain open and cram this into it: just because I don't like something that a website publishes doesn't mean I think the entire website is shit. There are some good things at TPM, which is why I still visit. But, increasingly, there's useless tabloid gossip like this - gossip that does absolutely nothing to improve the state of this country or our lives or even so much as serve a positive example of how progressives choose to conduct ourselves.
Just compare, for example, this "report" on what Mark Sanford wanted his wedding vows to say (he said/she said gossip that's impossible to verify but not important anyway) to just about anything Greenwald has written in the past, oh, 2 years.
Hey Progressives! We just got our fucking ASSES handed to us in the health care debate by the right. They're laughing and pointing at us while celebrating victory while we jerk off in a little circle to "reports" like this.

Can you grasp the fact that it is very significant what Sanford wanted his wedding vows to say? First of all, the amazing presumption it took to think that his editing the vows changes the actual legal framework in which matrimony resides. Turns out, what do you know, that no matter what he coerced his wife into saying, adultery is grounds for divorce, huh?
And a guy who will lie to a person he loves, concerning a contract he uis entering into voluntarily, cannot be trusted on any level. Why are you so afraid of acknowledging that?

I like the way she conveniently glosses over her complicity in this little fiasco. "We were young and in love."
As my Aunt Bessie used to say, "My ass."
Jenny Sanford was an opportunistic, ambitious social climbing shrew who saw Mark Sanford as her chance to jump from mere riches as an investment banker to the ruling classes. She let hubby get away with removing the fidelity part of their marriage vows because she didn't care - she had another bigger agenda in mind. And I guarantee she knew about his screwing around for years, but again, looked the other way because she didn't want to upset her agenda. It was only when he shoved his affair in her face that she had no choice but to take off.
Takes two to tango Jenny. Hope you enjoyed the dance.

Fidelity is part of ANY traditional wedding vows, "forsaking all others", but Mark thinks he's above all those rules because the Family says God has chosen his path for him, so he's powerless if Little Mark wants to go hiking on the Argentinian tail.
But he's all in favor of traditional marriage for other people, as long as they aren't gay.

I think its guilt. They know by being a Republican you are morally bankrupt, and the reality of the GOP lifestyle goes against the grain of the way you may have been raised. For example the most irritating to me: "thou shall not bear false witness". They can't be so stupid as to believe some of their shit, so daily they violate ten commandments. They know they must be punished. Reading us pains them, and it goes directly to their sins. They read liberal stuff in seeking redemption from their hollow, hate filled, hypocritical, GOP life.

I left the state in 1998. I love my alma mater, but I never warmed up to the state.
By the way...with all of the books available for one's reading pleasure, why would anyone buy this particular book?

Why does no one in the media point out that if you'ra a godless moral relativist Democrat adultery ends your career vs. the GOP, Party of God and family values, it seems to almost enhance your career, see Newit, Vintner, Ensign, Burton, Craig?

Good question! The answer might just be that the republican christian party is just a bunch of complete hypocrites! Do as I say and not as I do. Larry Craig really takes the cake here. He was in a public bathroom trying to get a young cute undercover cop to put his boner in Larry's mouth and yet the republican christian party just let's it pass because Larry has a "wife" and he says of course he is not GAY! Perfect example of christian right wing family values!

He didn't want to promise to be faithful and then he wasn't.
Who saw that coming?!?!?
Just proves that love IS blind, is all.

Ok, so lemme get this straight:
1989 - Refuses to take vow to be faithful to his wife.
1998 - Votes to impeach Clinton for being unfaithful to his wife.
2008 - Is unfaithful to his wife.
Douche.

My guess is that he was unfaithful for much longer.
2008 - He got caught.

This guy thinks he is "Joe Ball Sac". You run into this type of ass at community golf tourneys, civic events etc. Always chairman of this or that and some kind of business man, like car dealership.(Come on Down to Sanford Chevrolet and get a used Hummer, eh eh). In high school he was "Joe Jock Strap" the towel snapping rah rah jerk off president of key club or such shite. Ah fuck it I will go have a beer the joe six pack I be.

Why is this TMZ-style story the banner headline story at TPM?
That Republican or far-right male politicians are sexual hypocrites and lying bastards hardly amounts to news.
Feeling superior isn't going to get health care done or move Obama one iota further to the left.
Next.

Well again, for millions of gay Americans whose hopes and dreams for the future are crushed by the incredible hypocrisy of these right wing family values politicians, this story is exactly what needs to get into the public mind. Marriage is as 'sacred' as you want it to be. Straight or Gay.

This is an odd story is so many ways. If Sanford expected to commit adultery, why signal it by changing the vows? And why bother to change the vows; if he's going have an illicit affair, he's going to lie about it anyway--as he actually did. And what fiancee would abide such an important change to a verbal contract...unless she had her own reasons for excluding the vow. Assuming this story is even true, it doesn't reflect well on either of them. Maybe she's like her ex-husband in that she doesn't know when to lay low and be quiet either

I agree. Hypocrisy should be exposed. But it's already been exposed. How does THIS detail further anything that matters in our political lives?
This is just bait for fucking dumbasses. If you don't hold TPM to a higher standard, they'll just keep going lower. Just like they have been for years.
I blame Josh Marshall more than anyone else. Probably the dollar signs in his eyes clouding up his journalistic vision.
