President Obama took Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) to task today for misrepresenting what the CBO says health care reform will do to peoples' premiums.

"Let me respond to what you just said, Lamar, because it's not factually accurate," Obama said. "The cost for families for the same type of coverage as they're currently receiving would go down 14 to 20 percent."

The record is tricky, but shows that Obama is correct. The Congressional Budget Office says that the average individual market premium will technically go up. But that's because people will be able to buy better coverage at a lower per-procedure cost, and with the help of subsidies. More to the point, CBO says, whatever happens to premiums (the price tag) people will be paying less out of pocket, because the government subsidies would more than outstrip any cost increases.

Isn't it Sen Lamar Alexander (R-TN)? Isn't he a Republican?

So 'accuracy' should be 'balanced'?

Thought Becerra took Ryan to task on the CBO...Either the referee-CBO is or is not credible!!! And Cooper did the same on the cost containment issue..tHE REPUBS WERE EMAILING THE MEDIA LIKE CRAZY TO REFUTE WHEN THEY WERE CAUGHT IN LIES ON CAMERA!

The American people won this ==they got to see what happens when the congress is caught in the process and not working for the peoples interest!... Marie --I agree that the incumbents need to go but we need Women too!

Lamar just didn't have the same level of authenticity without the plaid shirt and the pickup truck.

I believe, then, if Lamar Alexander is in his plaid truck and pickup truck mode, he should be called "Lamar!".

"THE FACTS: Both are right, but Obama offered important context that Alexander left out."

Hell, NO!! Alexander left out the critical fact that some would CHOOSE better coverage, and made it appear they would be forced to pay more for the same coverage.

I can't figure this out. You mean he's trying to make good things look bad? Why would he do that?

Both these guys need to read... the bottom line is that cost to the end consumer is lower, but actual cost is higher. The difference being made up by the tax payers.

Here is what the document ACTUALLY says:

Quote: "CBO and JCT estimate that the average premium per person covered (including dependents) for new nongroup policies would be about 10 percent to 13 percent higher in 2016 than the average premium for nongroup coverage in that same year under current law. About half of those enrollees would receive government subsidies that would reduce their costs well below the premiums that would be charged for such policies under current law." - End Quote

wivoter,
That doesn't negate that those with more affordable care will pay for better care and thus pay more into the system. According to your source, that group also only accounts for 57% of 32 million or about 10% of the 191 million of payees under the plan as described on the following page. The vast majority of people will see a reduction in premiums.

It is difficult to judge which is worse: the offensive reference to the President "whacking" or the racism of the Aunt Jemima part of your insult. I thought GOPers had learned to leave their white sheets at home, but apparently not everyone got the memo.

They need more minorities of all races in both Congress and the Senate. Things would run a lot smoother. Get rid of all these old white men who have been living off the government for decades and set in their own ways, have no new ideas, are not willing to change with time. Most of the panel yesterday were old white men. Term limit for everyone.

Sailorboy, you should be grateful you have freedom of speech, here. As opposed to TP"N", where you would have been banned long before now.

I wonder if you can appreciate that fact.
