Gov. David Paterson (D-NY) announced this afternoon that he will not seek another term in office, after the New York Times revealed his administration had intimidated a woman into dropping assault charges against a top aide.
Paterson, who took office when former Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D-NY) stepped down following a prostitution scandal, has maintained he would run despite low popularity and reports that the White House was pushing him to step down.
"Today I am announcing that I am ending my campaign for governor of the state of New York," Paterson said.
"I am looking forward to a full investigation of actions taken by myself and my administration," he said. "But I give you this personal oath: I have never abused my office. Not now, not ever."
"I cannot run for office and manage the state's business at the same time. And right now, New York State needs a leader who can devote full time to this service," he said.
"I am being realistic about politics. It hasn't been the latest distraction, it's been an accumulation of obstacles that have obfuscated me from bringing my message to the public," he said.
"For the past 25 years it has been my highest privilege to serve the people of New York," Paterson said. "I have never forgotten my oath or my responsibility to serve the people of New York with faith and with integrity."

Thats what the NY Times reported -that the governor personally called her a few days before she was due to appear in court. She didn't appear and the charges were dropped. I can't think of any innocent explanation for the governor to call this woman

hahaha I guess Paterson isn't going to see his campaign to the end. Sounds like he's looking back at some of his past mistakes. Sounds like a short-sighted decision.

Thanks for the info.
You, know, I would feel better about all this if the NYT went after assholes like John McCain for the horse shit that pours out of his mouth every day, or if they actually reported on the substance of what is going on in the political theater, but my suspicion is that they really only get their rocks off on sex and scandal. If John McCain raped a twelve year old, I suppose we'd start to hear about his politics.

Since this is what Obama-Rahm-DNC wanted months ago, how long before Republicans try to dress this up as some kind of "Chicago-style politics" payback for Paterson?
BTW, State Sen. Brady, the guy who is the leader to run for governor on the Republican ticket in Illinois (leading the hypothetical GOP tidal wave back to power) just introduced and then had to pull a bill to allow "mass euthenasia" of dogs and cats in carbon monoxide chambers. The man literally sponsored a bill to kill kitties and puppies in an election year. The rationale? It would save a handful of vets who use this outdated procedure a little time and money.
I'm guessing here, but that tidal wave may not be coming just yet.

This has nothing to do with any real or perceived impropriety on Paterson's part, it's because he didn't appoint Caroline Kennedy to the senate seat and now it's pay back time by the Bamster and his Chicago thugs.

So that makes what 3 out 4 for the 2006 Democrat statewide ticket right? I really don't understand New Yorkers blind loyalty to such a corrupt party. Why hasn't anyone taken notice of the fact that you guys nominated maybe the most ethically challenged ticket ever in the history of this state. And maybe the US. I honestly don't ever remember something like this happening in one state.

David Paterson is the lamest of lame ducks and needs to simply RESIGN NOW. Abandoning his campaign is not enough. David Paterson has abused and severely compromised his office and can not serve effectively.
For too long David Paterson has used his office, whether it be as head of the Senate Minority, Lt. Governor or as Governor, as an employment agency for his incompetent and unqualified friends, associates, and gal pals – David Johnson, Clemmie Harris, Michael Jones-Bey, Gabrielle Turner, Indira Noel…. This practice needs to stop now.
His staff and all his friends that he has placed in jobs need to be cleaned out as well...GET HIM AND THEM OUT NOW.
This UN-ELECTED GOV needs to go now, before more damage is done and more of the wrong people profit from his office.
The David Johnson episode provides further evidence that David Paterson is just up not up to the task of governing. He does not have what it takes to govern effectively.
“The Democratic Conference Organizational and Structural Report” detailing the workings of Paterson’s office while he was Senate Minority leader in the New York Senate is an objective assessment of this clowns ability to manage or more precisely mismanage.
http://www.politico.com/static/PPM110_demreportfinal.html
This scathing report indicated that Paterson’s Senate Minority office, headed by the highly inept Michael Jones-Bey, was completely dysfunctional. The unqualified and disinterested Mr. Jones-Bey, a childhood friend of Paterson, who is now incredulously Director of Division of Minority & Women's Business Development at New York State’s Empire State Development Corporation, was reported to be more interested in partying and boozing up with staff than working.
Wow! You can be a total bozo, ex-felon, or women batterer, but if you a friend or gal pal and work for David Paterson you get promoted and protected for such behavior.
David, it is TIME TO GO.
