House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement today on the Obama Administration's push for Israel to cancel its East Jerusalem construction plans. Here's the full text:

"The Administration's decision to escalate its rhetoric following Vice President Biden's visit to Israel is not merely irresponsible, it is an affront to the values and foundation of our long-term relationship with a close friend and ally. The Administration has demonstrated a repeated pattern since it took office: while it makes concessions to countries acting contrary to U.S. national interests, it ignores or snubs the commitments, shared values and sacrifices of many of our country's best allies.

If the Administration wants to work toward resolving the conflict in the Middle East, it should focus its efforts on Iran's behavior, including its pursuit of nuclear weapons, its state-sponsorship of terrorism, its crushing of domestic democratic forces, and the impact its behavior is having, not just on Israel, but also on the calculations of other countries in the region as well as on the credibility of international nonproliferation efforts. House Republicans remain committed to our long-standing bilateral friendship with Israel, as well as to the commitments this country has made."

Leaving aside the fact that Israel is not a U.S. ally (no treaty), rarely acts in the best interests of the U.S., and that Obama and his administration have bent over backwards up until now to accommodate Israeli interests and avoid any disruption in the "special relationship," Rep. Boehner is 100% correct.

As always.

Yes, and leaving aside the fact that Israel has, for the last 3-4 decades or so, repeatedly violated international treaties and agreements, most of which Israel itself has agreed to.
While we're at it, we might as well leave aside the war crimes that Israel has committed during that same period.

The GOP slavery toward the radical Christian right is making Middle East peace almost impossible. GOPers will routinely savage any attempt by a Democrat to mildly criticize Israel, so the Israelis know they just have to wait out every Democratic administration. And with everything Obama does, the GOP paints him as un-American, anti-Christian, anti-Israeli, illegitimate, etc. When one political party decides to throw aside rationality, decorum, and the common good, its very difficult to maintain a functioning democracy

Leaving aside the fact that Netanyahu's fragile coalition committed an epic diplomacy fail while Joe Biden was there (and has been openly antagonistic toward the Obama Administration since the inauguration), I think Boehner has once again opened his "Sunkist"-colored face to utter the non-truths we've come to expect from him.

Dear Sen. Boehner. Gen. Petraeus says that Israel's stance is endangering our missions elsewhere in the region, hence endangering our troops.

So that only leaves one question. Why do you hate our troops?

The Republicans openly cheering for foreigners who publicly insulted the United States and its president. Foreigners whose government, or at least one ministry, engineered a deliberate humiliation of the U.S. And, far from calling for the nuclear obliteration of that country, as they would have been doing had it been Dick Cheney who's been thus treated, they're cheering and supporting them.

Great Americans all, those Republicans. Time to revise that old jingoistic toast.

"My country. In her intercourse with foreign nations, may she always be right, but my country right or wrong. Unless the foreign nation is Israel or the president is a colored boy and a Democrat."

WTF does this statement even MEAN? Has Boner just given up trying to make sense, and just decided to string conservative catchphrases together? How exactly does rattling the saber at Iran help solve the real problems in places like East Jerusalem?

You gotta love those Republicans. Up is down, black is white.
I'm sorry, Boner, but tell me again why Israel such a great ally? We give them billions a year in cash and weapons, we give them cover in the Security Council whenever they decide to steal more land, or fuck up one of their neighbors; Our foreign policy in that region, for the last few decades at least, has been one long attempt to patch together the "peace process" they have no interest in pursuing, etc. What do we get out of this deal? Public insults. Headaches out the ass. Lectures from scum like Boner here, who'd cheerfully see every Jew on the planet dead if he thought there was a chance of seeing Jesus sooner.

I don't get it. Friends are supposed to help each other, but I'm not seeing a lot of help here. Maybe we should cut them off for a few years, let them deal with their neighbors on equal terms. Might lead to a badly needed attitude adjustment.

Boner and all the wing-nut-Israel-right-or-wrong crowd are hurting Israel.

Israel’s Defense Minister says in effect... Zionism Equals Apartheid.

“The simple truth is, if there is one state” including Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, “it will have to be either bi-national or undemocratic. … if this bloc of millions of Palestinians cannot vote, that will be an apartheid state.”

Does this sound like Jimmy Carter? It was Israel’s Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

Dear Mr Boehner on June 8th 1967 the USS Liberty was
attacked by Israli warplanes, 12 Americans died in the
air attack, the ship was then torpedoed, additionally
22 Americans were murdered, the President of the United
States and the Secretary of Defense did not send help to
defend the Liberty, they did not want to embarrass an ally.
43 years later we have people like you that don't want
to embarrass our ally. God bless the crew of the Liberty,
did you ever wonder why LBJ did not run for reelection.
This Ally laughs at the United States, and you defend them.
Remember John you don't speak for the United States, you
speak for the people of Ohio. They elected you, we Did Not..

Does Orange Boehner actually ever do anything? I mean he doesn't seem to ever be seen doing actual Senate work. He spends 24/7 bashing Dems, voting, "NO" on anything they try to pass, and the rest of his time is devoted to spray tanning.

What a disgrace he is as a Senator and as a rep from my home state, that great sh'thole I left long ago, Ohio.

The Israeli position has been, and remains, to create facts on the ground that will make certain that all of Jerusalem must remain in Israeli hands in any final settlement with the Palestinians. The Israeli announcement clearly was timed to make that point as bluntly as possible.

Tom Freidman has it right yesterday in the Times. Biden should have terminated his visit at the time of the announcement and returned home. The message that Netanyahu and Israel needs to hear from the United States is, "Friends don't let friends drive drunk."
