House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) had some strong words today for his Republican counterpart, after Eric Cantor (R-VA) claimed earlier that it was Democrats who are fanning the flames of violence.
"Democrats aren't playing with this at all," Clyburn said. "I would remind Mr. Cantor that it was his member who yelled 'baby killer' to Stupak, who the next morning sent out a fundraising letter trying to benefit from that effort."
I challenge him to show me in any instance where he's seen a Democrat do that sort of thing. We just don't play with fire.
Clyburn also addressed the image of a noose that was faxed to his office -- and suggested it was part of a coordinated effort.
"I've got the same fax that a lot of other people got, but with a different name on it. So this stuff is being coordinated, and I suspect, maybe from one source."
Clyburn also called on lawmakers of both parties to work together on "tamping this stuff down" and warned Republicans that "if you play with fire, you're bound to get burned. And I do believe, if they don't tamp this down, they're gonna feel the heat for it."

I would suggest that the most effective response would be to brush these acts off with contemptuous ridicule. Yes, the perps are unbalanced and more than a little dangerous, but they measure 'success' by the amount of fear they can generate and they recoil from mockery. Just sayin'

No. I think mockery would make them even more angry, and possibly make them want to prove just how seriously they should be taken.

The only thing that will stop the escalation of violence is strong, direct, public and repeated denunciation by Republican leaders, Tea Party leaders, and right wing media personalities. Limbaugh, Beck, Palin, etc. have to go on TV and state that it is completely unacceptable to threaten or commit acts of violence. No hedging. No "we understand the urge." No "channel that energy into something else." No "Democrats deserve it, but...". Just outright, forceful condemnation. They're the only ones these thugs and cowards will listen to. If they don't, the attacks will only become more brazen until someone is assaulted or killed.
But since they're the ones ginning up the hate and anger in the first place, that just won't happen. I wonder if McConnell or Boehner are familiar with the name Robespierre?

I'd like you, Bill from PA, to walk out onto your porch and smell gas from a cut propane line, to find all the tires on your car flattened, to discover a full-page ad in your newspaper with photos of your family and exhortations to "visit" your home and tell me how you'd "brush off" these incidents.
These are acts of terrorism against elected officials of the United States, and to deny or simplify such acts is to be complicit.
I want the teabaggers followed; I want the US to aggressively monitor these domestic terrorists, and that includes Rush, Hannity, Coulter, Palin, ad nauseum. The worst gang of vile human beings in politics. They deserve full terrorist treatment.
If one Democrat is hurt because of this, the repercussions will be of equal value.

You shouldn't fight this with police you should fight this with politics. They want to be monitored and arrested etc. It would feed into their whole "us versus whateverism" narrative. That would actually make them feel more important.
Democrats are playing this one correctly....make a political argument and show the world how ridiculous these people's ideas are.

So, when the police arrest one of the TeaNazis, we make a campaign ad and then let them go? What are you saying? Are we a society of laws and justice, or is it all politics now?

Unless Beck, Hannity, et.al. condemn the violence, then keep up the pressure on the Republicans to condemn it. Otherwise, it is no more than a wink-wink by the Republicans, and the Fox noise machine goes into high gear.
Boehner and Cantor stated they don't condone violence. Not condoning it is far less than condemning it.
"I do not condone violence," Cantor said on Capitol Hill on Thursday. "There are no leaders in the building, no rank and file members that condone violence, period."
Well, how about condemning it with strong words?

I wonder how long it is going to take some of the more sane Republicans to realize that by encouraging things to get out of hand they have gotten on the back of a tiger that they no longer control?
Biggest problem with encouraging wingnuts to riot is that they aren't going to stay on the path you start them on and someday, they are going to explode over everyone.
As long as party is placed before country in politics, things are going to get worse before they get better!

I do not expect the violence to end until someone is fatally injured. There has been no reduction in the inciteful rhetoric of the GOPers or their mouthpieces so far this week. Further, attempts to rationalize the violence as Boehner did on the House floor makes the problem only worse.

Why won't any of the Democrats in Congress call them out by name? Steve King and his ridiculous "velvet revolution" speech, Palin's gun sight map, the Republican Reps who went out on the balcony and gave speeches and waved the Gadsden flag, Beck's incoherent but clear enough accusations that progressives are preparing an armed takeover.
Why all the impotent, tut-tutting generalities? Name names and demand apologies. Bring proceedings to censure.
As usual, the Democrats need to grow a pair.

They did. Sorry, after this week you have to at least give some credit for the pushback from the Dems against the McVeigh GOP.

I love how the right loves to claim equivalency between the current anti-reform terror campaign and the violence of the Unabomber, Earth Liberation Front, or the anarchists who attached themselves to the anti-war movement.
.
Here's the difference: There were no Democratic congressmen cheering on the Unabomber or the anarchists or the ELF. There were no radio or TV pundits spewing eliminationist rhetoric designed to fit their radical, violent agenda.
At this late date, the best the Republicans can do is to say, well, yeah, violence is uncool, but the Dems brought it on themselves by passing this Nazi, Socialist, baby-killing health care bill.

A couple of things for Republicans to ponder:
1--If someone gets killed or badly hurt due to your ravings, I will hate you. Not to worry about this one. I despise you already, but please go to number 2.
2--If some gets killed or badly hurt due to your ravings, America will hate you and for a very, very long time.
Kind regards.

This is just another reminder that the Dept. of Homeland Security study issued in early 2009, which asserted that domestic terrorism by right wing groups and right wing militia is a serious problem that needs attention, and which was attacked by the GOP as a partisan report (even though most of it has been assembled while Bush 43 was still in office) was in fact, dead-on-balls accurate. These wingnuts are a serious problem. The only good thing is that the potential of a Democratic bloodbath in Novemner is fading faster than John Boehner's tan at night.

I feel your pain, Ma'am. My rep. is Henry Brown. He hasn't just been silent on this, as such; his head is buried so deeply in his own ass that he can neither hear nor speak. That's how he prefers it.
I also feel your love for Mr Clyburn.

It would be presumptuous to think anybody would have any better vision about how to get a handle on this bubbling cauldron of proto-potential-domestic-terrorism than these civil rights icons, like John Lewis, James Clyburn, etc... They get more, "been there, done that," points than anyone else involved. The mere fact that they're speaking out catches my attention, 'cause they know the smell of a bad moment in history, from the subtlest nuance all the way on up. They seem to be calling for de-escalation and straight-up law enforcement. At least this time around the cops and the FBI are trying to protect them.
The Republicans, I fear, are not on board with the program. Eric Cantor is especially ludicrous. A sane man worried about random gunfire (not too trifling a concern in his home district, I'm sure) would endorse stronger gun control, not less (or none). Whatta douche. Am I the only one to see that he's a total closet queen, by the way? I'm gay too, so I don't mean that as a slam, but Eric Cantor isn't being fully candid about more than just his single-bullet-theory...
