Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said today that Republicans are going to try to repeal the health care reform bill, even the popular parts that they have previously shown support for.

McCain said on Good Morning America today that the bill "is terribly wrong for America," and that despite "all this euphoria that's going on, this inside-the-beltway champagne toasting and all that, outside the beltway the American people are very angry."

He added that "we're going to try to repeal this, and we are going to have a very spirited campaign coming up between now and November, and there will be a very heavy price to pay for it."

Host George Stephanopoulos pointed out that McCain just said that Republicans liked some parts of the bill -- and that they were actually popular with the American public.

McCain responded: "We want to start over, as we've said."

John McCain channels Alf Landon's repeal Social Security "winning" campaign strategy from 1936

"This is the largest tax bill in history," the Republican leader fumed. The reform "is unjust, unworkable, stupidly drafted and wastefully financed."

And that wasn't all. This "cruel hoax," he said, this "folly" of "bungling and waste," compared poorly to the "much less expensive" and "practical measures" favored by the Republicans.

"We must repeal," the GOP leader argued. "The Republican Party is pledged to do this."

And I am sure this repeal strategy will work out for McCain and the Republicans as well as it did for the Alf and the Republicans back in '36.

I was just about to post something along similar lines. Republicans will have about as much success repealing HCR than they did in their attempts to repeal Social Security or Medicare. (Remember Medicare was also supposed to be the end of freedom in America too.)

The real question is how long will it take Republicans running for office to start trying to scare voters into believing Democrats want to take away their universal health care? I give them five years.

"Republicans are going to try to repeal the health care reform bill, even the popular parts that they have previously shown support for."

I'm sure the Dems are counting on it. Arguing to remove the good portions of the bill will not fly politically. It can only hurt the GOP, which is why David Frum noted yesterday that repealing the bill will be next to impossible.

McCain: "We're going to try to repeal this and ... there will be a very heavy price to pay for it." Well said. Hope you're right, John, hope you're right.

Elections have consequences. Why can't Republicans come to terms with this? I'm beginning to wonder if John McCain knows he lost.

" . . . AND GET OFF MY LAWN ! ! !"

The Reprobates need dictionaries badly. Complete dictionaries, with the words "asshole, compassion, conservative, elite, enough, greed," and "shame" because they don't seem to know those words at all.

The ads write themselves-

"GOP to America- we want to re-instate exclusions for pre-existing conditions and allow insurance companies to rescind your policy after you've gotten sick"

With political acumen like that, it's only a mtter of time before John McCain runs for, and wins, the presidency.

McCain's crowning achievement was voting against extended benefits for GIs returning from Iraq then taking credit for it. Sweet guy.

A friend who was a career Navy pilot says McCain has a character in common with lots of fighter pilots, to do something bold and then try to figure out where to go from there. Now it just means he shoots his mouth off and hopes people have a short memory. Back in the day, it meant him walking away from several million dollars of burning and ruined government property more than once.

I think he knows he just can't accept it .... particularly difficult because a black took it away from him .... not said out loud by insinuated over and over again.

How quickly did McCain plummet into irrelevancy? When i see him, I think "this guy is still talking about stuff?"

This loud claim that they will repeal the bill is strange. They obviously won't be successful in that, so why set themselves up for failure? Tilting at windmills, without a real policy proposal in sight....

Why limit it to this bill, John? Why not just start the whole election over again?
