President Barack Obama, speaking shortly after signing the health care reform bill into law, mocked GOP leaders who had implied that passage of the bill would bring about "Armageddon."

"I heard one of the Republican leaders say this was 'going to be Armageddon,'" the President said, referring to comments earlier this week by House Minority Leader John Boehner and RNC Chairman Michael Steele.

"Well, two months from now, six months from now, we can check it out, look around, and we'll see," Obama continued, drawing laughter from the audience.

Ya gotta love this. And you know he could have said so much more to put those yahoos in their place. He showed great restraint.

Watch his number go up once people actually understand what is in it. Easy 10 points.

I can't wait for the time when Republicans have plumed the depths of hyperbole (even for them), because then we'll be able to watch their heads start exploding. OK, it may be more like balloons popping than actual heads (you know, with brains and such inside) exploding.

Note to GOP:

The brown acid circulating around you isn't too good. It is suggested that you stay away from that. Of course it's your own trip. So be my guest, but please be advised that there is a warning on that one.

The GOP will soon have the credibility of those long-bearded wild-eyed preachers wearing the sandwich boards proclaiming the End of the World is Near! Good times.

The tragic part of the aftermath is that Obama will get his meager 10-12% increase in approval for the bill, and nothing more.

Nothing more when it should be a 25-30% increase because if you take a minute and allow yourself to view the facts unemotionally, you will see that you will / have benefited.

No, we will still see 30-40% of Americans clinging to a pseudo-reality. 30-40% of Americans who will have egg on their faces but will STILL turn to their rightwing leaders and ask for ANOTHER LIE they can believe in.

All in the name of finding ANY excuse, real or blatantly hyperbolic and false...anything so they can have an excuse to hate and oppose this man and these Democrats.

And they will do this all in the open, as a reminder to us all that being human doesn't guarantee we are thoughtful animals bound by reason and logic. Pathetic.

Yes, but the fact remains that a consequence of this bill's passage is that the GOP illusion will stripped down to its bare non-essence for some people, no matter how meager, and pop the neo-con fantasy of our imminent downfall at the hands of dastardly liberals. Even now there are conservative voices such as David Frum arguing against the extremist tactics of vitriolic rhetoric and deceit.

That there will be some people, a small slice, that snap out of the neo-con delusion by experiencing the benefits of the passage of this bill is paramount. It shows there is a modicum of hope.

Inevitably, albeit gradually, HCR will be embraced and accepted by vast majorities as a good thing as the law itself is continually improved just as medicare today is universally embraced by the conservative street that benefits from it even if they don't intellectually understand it as "government run healthcare".

Satire is a powerful weapon and Obama gets that. It's handy that Republicans can't figure out how to wield it.

"didn't Sen. DeMint (demented) claim that health care would be Obama's Waterloo?"

And he was absolutely right. The only problem is that Obama is playing the part of the Duke of Wellington.

As a lowly citizen of this country and a supporter of the Democratic Party I can only say that I HOPE they will take this "win" and build upon the momentum. The Republicans are looking pretty freakish right now, but it is incumbent on the progressives to keep pushing to incentiventives on their agenda. This is not the time to rest on the laurels of this short-term success, but to build to make things better. I can not put this statement more more plain. We have the majority now. Keep pushing for better. Keep fighting. Keep margainalizing the crazy talk and push toward initiatives that are common sense improvements. KEEP THE PRESSURE ON while Democrates have the power. Nuff said.

When you elect to receive Social Securty is it mandatory that you buy Medicare? If this is the law, then how will this affect the lawsuit filed today by 13 GOP AG's because the HC Reform bill requires American's to buy HC insurance?

re Medicare: I think part A (hospital coverage) is automatic, and I don't know if you have to pay for it. But Part B (office visits, etc) & I think Part D (drug coverage) aren't. Lots of people don't have Part B, whether because they've got a private plan they prefer (i.e., through work, that they don't pay for, or through a retirement plan), or because they don't feel they can afford the premium (most of those have Part A & are on Medicaid). I saw it all the time working in a medical office.

So, no, I don't think the mandate issue has really been tested - but by making it you pay a fee if you don't buy insurance I think they've gotten around the problem I thought I saw coming, which was a takings challenge. The fee's essentially a tax for freeloading, which I think flies. I'd have preferred just a straight tax to fund single payer approach, but that clearly wasn't something that would pass.

Enjoy the victory, but remember, we talked about how disorganized the Republicans were after Obama was elected, and look what happened during this past summer, we let them come back. Now, don't sing the same tune, and keep them down by passing more of the progressive agenda.
