When Sarah Palin wrote a few notes on her hand during her speech to a tea party convention last month, she was ridiculed by bloggers, comedians and White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs. This weekend, she defended the notes at an Ohio pro-life fund-raiser, saying she was in good company.
A fan, she said, had sent her a biblical passage. Isaiah 49:16 reads: "See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me."
"Hey, if it was good enough for God, scribbling on the palm of his hand, it's good enough for me, for us. He says, in that passage he says, I wrote your name on the palm of my hand to remember you. And I'm like OK, I'm in good company," Palin said to laughter.
During her tea party convention speech, Palin had dismissed President Obama as a "charismatic guy with a teleprompter."

Why would god have to write something on his hand? What did he use to write with? Did it come off later when he washed his hands?
What did it say? "Oh gosh, what did I do?"

Ms. Palin seems to be the one bright spot on the Dem's horizon.
As long as she's bumbling around in the public spotlight, they still have some hope of staying in power.

we have a president who can't talk without a tele-prompter [ he hems and haws without one ] a vice-president who every time he opens his mouth offends someone and is known not to be 'very bright' by his former fellow senators, and you libtards are worried about palin? she will never be president, she knows this, but thanks to your hatred she is a multi-millionaire. keep making her richer. dopes. ignore her, she will go away.but even on this 'liberal site', i have seen liberal women de-graded, i will not even repeat what you guys called hillary, and, as it turns out, she may be the only competent person in this administration. i never understood the old saying that 'hate blinds' now i do. and in this case its making palin richer and richer.

I realize that this is merely stating the obvious to any rational TPM readers, but anyone who for example watched Obama at the health care summit discussing hcr issues all day long, off the cuff, demonstrating a command of the issues (and anyone on any side has to agree with that) would understand that the whole teleprompter accusation is just another hairbrained right wing complaint without the least shred of merit.
A teleprompter is like having handwritten notes, only you can read them while looking out at the audience and at the cameras. Every president since at least Reagan and probably long before has used this simple technology when giving speeches. Anyone can disagree with every single thing Obama has ever said if they want to, but accusing him of being inarticulate or not extrememly knowledgeable about the issues is an obvious absurdity.
Oh, and the keys marked "shift" at each side of the keyboard will result in upper case letters, the use of which is a long standing tradition in Western languages to clarify one's written expression.

Yah. The whole "needs a teleprompter thing is a lie.
I think the Republicans are still smarting from having a President who was not just a horrible public speaker but ran the risk of starting a third world war every time he opened his mouth.
He was so bad that at Republican fundraising events in which the only people who were even allowed within blocks of the event had been vetted, checked out at other locations and then brought to the Auditorium by bus ... even with that much of a thoroughly screened "friendly" crowd, no one was allowed to have any kind of audio or video recording device for fear of what they might catch 'ol Dubya spouting out.
So yeh, I guess after that nightmare, Palin must seem like a breath of freshy weshy air to some of them.

how about the statement from obama when asked about that harvard professor. one would have to believe he would have answered better then he did if he had a teleprompter. or how about him saying that soldiers should carry their own health insurance? i think without a teleprompter he suffers from 'bidenspeak'. he is a bit of a dullard without the teleprompter, and too much of a baptist preacher with one. these things i could live with if he wasn't so thin-skinned. in any case, palin gets richer and richer because you libtards hate her so much, biden is biden, and thanks to sites like TPM the repubs take over in november. i mean you lost massachusettes, the kennedy seat for christ sake, and obama said that happened because people there were angry with the republicans. as for my typing skills, they are poor, i'm ok with you making fun of them. but, you do not have to read my comments, as for obama, he appears to be smart, but he's not. he has little command of our country or his own staff, a poor manager, and a lousy leader. and i voted for him. which i regret.

*sigh* No one ever claimed Obama or anyone else is perfect all the time. Perhaps you might look up his press conferences or the hcr summit on YouTube or somewhere in case you missed them. No need to watch all seven hours or whatever the summit was. Just a half hour or so will do. At his last press conference I remember thinking "Hey, a shortish answer will do. No need to write a book."
And once again, those "shift" keys do have a purpose. You're not e. e. cummings, and this isn't poetry. Seriously, it's not that hard. Just hold down the "shift" key while typing the letter you want with the other hand. See? Simple.

i watched it, he didn't listen, nor was he interested in what others others had to say. his base is the far left, so he has already lost social libs like me, he's lost the the independents, and he's lost the faith of the country. he spoke foe almost 3 hours, the dems another 2, not much input from the repubs. look at his facial expressions when a repub is talking. terrible body language. most speech is not verbal, any body language book will explain that. he has no gift for compromise, and, as a result he can't even control his own party. oh yeah, about the typing, not that its your business [just your way of putting me down and trying to feel superior] but i did lose most of my left arm, thats why my skills are poor.

cal girl, sarah is not my wet dream girl, i don't really care if she approves of me using the 'tard' word, but what cracks me up is how every 'libtard' [those that seek out the far left position and stay there ] goes to pieces over her, not realizing that every time they criticize her for something silly it firms up her support from the right. if you ignored her she would go away. most libtards couldn't tell you who barry goldwater's running mate was in 1964 [ bill miller, a little known congressman from new york] he just faded away, and so will palin as soon as you nuts stop focusing on her. besides, i'm not sure she is any worse then the idiot biden, who in case you haven't noticed, is the poster child for idiots. in other words, you made palin rich, and the more you focus on her the richer she gets. no one pays much attention to joe biden, we are just use to his many blunders, but the right pays no attention to him [nor does the center or the the left ] we all just sigh and say 'oh, thats old joe making a fool of himself again'. he could never write a book that would sell 2 million copies, because no one really hates him, he's been the village idiot for so long we just accept him for who he is and chuckle about his latest gaffe. your own discription of palin as a wet dream girl just helped her sell 100 more books. she thanks you.

I don't "hate" Sarah Palin. I'm sure I'd rather like her if we were to meet. I just like the fact that she is so easy to make jokes about. You fans of Sarah really need to have a sense of humor checkup. By the way, I'll make a joke about liberals, conservatives, Repubs, Dems - it doesn't matter especially when the joke is so obvious. Some of my best one-liners are at the expense of my wife - and I like her quite alot. She, however, usually gets the joke and can laugh at herself. Lighten up dude.

So, you accept the fact that she's merely using the system and her notoriety to make money from her former position as a joke candidate for public office? I thought you Goopers were against this sort of thing. Now she's famous, she can stretch the truth, outwardly lie and obfuscate and spew venom about the opposition without ever actually having anything really important to say, and thats acceptable as long as she's getting rich from it. I guess that really is the only measure of success the brownshirt conservatives really recognize isn't it.
Second point, she is NOT in this administration. She has no connection to it, she is not a part of it, and she was prevented from entering public office because of her mouth and her extraordinary lack of even basic education on some VERY important aspects of what the job is supposed to be.
She is a twit, a flaming moron, a complete airhead who thinks that its a game to make money from. She has no clue about anything important, she can only regurgitate what she's been told to regurgitate by people who have extraordinarily evil intentions for this country. She is STUPID. And that is really a reflection of what this so-called "modern conservatism" is really all about. You really don't need to actually know anything, just wave the flag and talk about patriotism and things that offend you so you don't need to really have to have any depth of actual knowledge about any of the important things and you'll become rich.
Success!
She would be nothing but a figurehead, babbling on like a chatty Cathy doll while her handlers loot the treasury and chisel away at the US Constitution so they can replace it with the fascist method of governance.
This is why we moderate lefties will always win in the long run, we run educated, intelligent individuals who write books, you consistently run beauty queens and frat boys who burn them.

i do not disagree with what you have said, except the implication that i somehow support palin. also, if you are a moderate lefty, this site is not for you, some of these nuts on this site really should be committed. i consider myself left on social issues, right on matters of defense and fiscal responsibility. i believe its our governments duty to help those who can't help themselves, but not those who won't. my favorite center-left president was clinton, but he only came back to the center after taking a beating in '94. i can't say obama is far -left, but he's as left as he can be, he would go farther left but his own party will not let him. lets hope his recent beatings in va., nj, and mass. move him to the center left, where he could govern, he still has time, but i doubt his ability to do so, he is not as smart as bill clinton, so i think he's a one term man.

Not only omnipotent but it is also blasphemous to suggest that God has a palm, a hand or a body. A body is a confining space and to suggest that God has literally written on the palm of the Divine hand implicitly limits God to the confines of a body. As omnipotent, God can have no limits so suggesting God has a body is to deny his omnipotence which of course is blasphemy.

Who can argue with this kind of logic?
I read it in a book that everyone knows is the literal word of a magic invisible man. So every single word in that book is true. (Except, of course, for the sick, inconvenient and politically untenable ideas like rape, slavery, sexual servitude, the lopping off of body parts, stoning, how to grow crops, what to wear...)
Religion is a mental illness. And we need to start saying so.

But if God is all powerful and omnipotent, then didn't he know billions of years ago that we were going to write these words? And once written aren't we simply adhering to his grand, mysterious plan (ahem) for the universe?
Unless you believe that "god" created human beings, gave them free will, then damns them to an eternity of torture for exercising the free will he gave them in the first place. Seems like a pretty fucked up god if you ask me.

Right.
And this PROVES that God loves incest, because he allowed it the first time with the children of Adam and Eve.
Now you can argue that God HAD to allow some incest there. But when he specifically killed everyone but Noah's family, it was clear as day that he was fine with one man's children breeding up a storm. (pun intended)

Boy, this is pretty crazy even for $arah. Is her plan to pre-empt being parodied by doing it herself?
I agree 100% that excessive, wildly irrational religiosity of the kind displayed here should be classified as a mental illness and treated as such. Many conditions much less damaging to the psyche and the soul than this are already put in this category. Adult sufferers are probably beyond reach, but think of the children!

Evangelicals are ridiculed for believing various events herald the coming of the Apocalypse, the Rapture, Armageddon, etc. Personally I think such gibberish is crazy but I have to say it'll gain a helluva a lot of credence with me if Palin makes it to the White House.

Let me get this straight: God - the all-powerful creator of the universe and everything in it - needed to write my name on his hand to remember it. Was that before or after he made a rock so heavy he couldn't lift it?
Oh, and the dollar sign on her palm was just a reminder to make sure she collected her speaking fees before she left.

Palin is being self-deprecating with this quip, and is also demonstrating her scriptural bonafides to the religous right. Rather than toss the usual secular lingo around (it just confirms her in her martyrdom to the right), one might merely ask if Isaiah 49:26 will be her campaign theme.

Why am I surprised and why does Sarah continue to surprise. Almost getting creepy. She drags her kids around for votes and then ups the ante by dragging her new born disabled baby along for the crowd too! Using the God Bible reference is sooo old but the hand writing writing does put her in a special "light". Just went to the front of the "I'm-not-delusional-you're-delusional" line, with Michelle lock-and-load Bachmann a close 2nd. This is becoming challenging. Will reference my DSM lV.

Hi, Sarah, this is God. I'm calling to inform you that I was employing a metaphor for the fact that my memory is not faulty, concerning Israel. For future reference, also, refrain from making comparisons of yourself to me to justify your foolish behavior. It might make you seem... how should WE say this... a little presumptuous.
As for your application for extra credit, I'm afraid it will be denied For as my kid once told people:
Everybody knows you are a pious person, and you have your reward from many there in your world concerning your devotion to me. However, I am adamant about rewarding people for the truth of their faith, rather than relying on popular approval from your fans.
Have a nice day, and try to do something nice in return for somebody else, please.

Moron. Talk about an obvious example of an "after-the-fact" rationalization. Does she really think anyone will believe that she read a passage in the Bible and thought "Gee, God wrote on His hand. I think I will too"?
Following her logic, when can we expect a deranged serial killer accused of murdering the first born children of everyone in his neighborhood to proclaim that "God did it first, so it's all good"?

RE: "In that passage he says, I wrote your name on the palm of my hand..." - Palin
MY COMMENT: If she's going to cite scripture, at least she should cite it correctly. Does she believe in "inerrancy", or not? Engraving (to form by incision - as on wood or metal) is quite a bit different from writing. If cutting "his" palms like a good 'borderline personality' is good enough for "G-d", then why doesn't she utilize such stigmata?
Nonetheless, I'm relieved that she didn't claim G-d himself "wrote" it on the palm of her hand. Of course, if "she" considers "herself" to be "G-d", then I suppose "he" did do so.
