Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) introduced a bill yesterday that would bump Ulysses S. Grant -- our 18th president and Civil War hero -- from the $50 bill in favor of Ronald Reagan -- our 40th president and Republican hero.
McHenry said of the legislation:
President Reagan was a modern day statesman, whose presidency transformed our nation's political and economic thinking. Through both his domestic and international policies he renewed America's self confidence, defeated the Soviets and taught us that each generation must provide opportunity for the next.
"Every generation needs its own heroes," he added. "One decade into the 21st century, it's time to honor the last great president of the 20th and give President Reagan a place beside Presidents Roosevelt and Kennedy."
On behalf of Bill Clinton: Ouch.
Rep. Patrick McHenry is also known for noting that he hasn't "seen enough evidence one way or the other" as to whether President Obama is a citizen.

Ronald Reagan is responsible for flipping me from moderate Republican to committed Democrat.
I guess I was spared the early obsequious coverage, at least, because I was in France when he died -- I was with a choral group that was singing in the D-Day 60th anniversary festivities. I did have to bite my tongue when one of the members of the group observed that Reagan was the best president of his lifetime (and this was no young kid).

More than once, as I recall. Just in time for me to start my career as a teenage dishwasher.
If we're looking to put out information that will sour some of the boosters on the idea, raising taxes is good, but it won't be enough.
We'll have to remind people about his actions regarding illegal immigration, too.
And negotiating with the Evil Empire - I frankly give him props for that, to my chagrin.
Anytime I'm getting on a good "Reagan=bad^2 for America" I lose steam as soon as I think about what he and Gorbachev achieved; INF was a huge step, and Reagan did actually get the ball rolling on START negotiations in the early 80s.

To each, his or her own priorities. The thing is, this Reagan on the $50 stuff is so much less complicated than that there healthcare reform. It is an issue you can consider with your gut - no need to use your brain. And it means so much more to the prosperity and success of the nation. Conservative priorities vs. Liberal priorities. There certainly is a difference.

Tower Commission testimony February 2 1987 : Reagan testifies to the Tower Board for a second time. His testimony is inconsistent and confused. The Board pointed out Reagan hadn’t known about August shipment of anti-tank missiles, but Reagan had said he DID know. When asked for an explanation, Reagan picked up a briefing memo he had been provided and read aloud: "If the question comes up at the Tower Board meeting, you might want to say that you were surprised."

yeah, how's that working out for us? They also made ones with all the presidents on them (individually).

Because it would put enormous pressure on Republicans to get on board. The main thing holding back our abandonment of the dollar bills is the paper industry. I'm sure there are Democrats beholden the paper industry as well, but I suspect there are more Republicans.
If it takes putting Reagan on the dollar coin to get us off $1 bills, it's a small price to pay for an environmentally friendly move - not to mention the foreign exchange advantages of having turing $1 bills into coins.

Reagan should have been impeached abd they want to put him on a 50.00 bill? In 1990, legendary investigative reporter Seymour Hersh wrote a lengthy investigation of the Iran-Contra probe, focused on how the rules and timing were rigged to avoid finding any culpability for Reagan. Hersh explained the ground rules, set down two months before Reagan himself came clean on what he knew. "At an early caucus in January [1987], according to one participant, the Senators reached one easy consensus. 'We didn't want to go after the president,' the participant said. 'He was too old,' with too little time left in office. The Senators "honestly thought the country didn't need another Watergate. They were urgently hoping to avoid a crisis. There was another consensus, the participant added: the President did not have the mental capacity to understand what had happened." Also they did not want to run against an incumbent President in 88 as George H Bush would have been.

The Unified Consortium of Hip Hop Artists Past & Present (UCHHAPP) is firmly opposed to this move on the grounds that our members will not rewrite lyrics to songs in order to rhyme Reagan in place of Grant. We feel strongly that with Abraham & Washington already presenting a lyrical challenge in our prose, robbing hardworking American songwriters of yet another monetary bragging crutch would be too much for us to tolerate. This is not about honoring a President, it is about the loss of real jobs to real Americans.

This is part of overthrow of the old Republican Party. The new folks, predominantly southern, are very uneasy with Abraham Lincoln and his legacy, including winning the Civil War.
Go to any web site that has an unmoderated comments section for each past US president, and you'll find a flood of right-wing hatred for Lincoln.
As a Civil War general, Grant is closely associated with Lincoln. But in truth, Grant was one of the worst presidents, and his administration was rife with corruption.
Moreover, in 1862, Gen. Grant made himself infamous for his "General Order No. 11", which expelled all Jews from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi, an order which was zealously carried out by his subordinates.
All in all, Grant and Reagan are both questionable choices for the high honor of being featured on currency.

I disagree. Grant SAVED THE UNION. How quickly we forget the past. More than anyone other than Lincoln, Grant was responsible for keeping this country together. He was able to see the terrible choices the War forced on him and make the correct decisions that lead to victory.
Now, you can argue that we'd have been far, far better off if the South did succeed, heck I may even agree with that, but Grant deserves all the honor we can bestow on him.

We'll take care of policy. We'll write tax legislation, health care policy, etc.
I'm completely willing to live in a world where I have to travel on the Grover Norquist Interstate -- so long as the Democrats get to decide how to fund it, require contractors pay a living wage to build it, and set tax rates to pay for it.
It makes perfect sense to me...

The $50 was just redesigned, making this pretty wasteful. $100 would make more sense since the new design is about to be released anyway, and it's not a cheap thing to do.
I'd be for a $1 redesign that goes through all of the Presidents every 2 months like states & quarters. Denomination's small enough that you don't have to worry about the increased counterfit threat. Have it be a last hurrah before switching to a $1 coin with Washington on it. That way the GOP can have its Reagan dollars and I can have my Wilson & FDR dollars. I don't know if it's even possible to purchase a $100,000 bill anymore (with Wilson on it), and at least one Roosevelt should be on paper currency.

Let's see now: Grant played a major part in winning the Civil War which saved the country. Reagan supported policies that were the bigging of our down fall. His second term was marked by a mental decline which makes many of us wonder who was running the country.
Nope. I don't worship at the altar of Ronnie. I adore his son,

Sheesh! Granted, being a dead president isn't a prerequisite for getting on a piece of currency, nor is being a particularly good president, but Ulysses S. Grant at least distinguished himself in the Civil War, if not in the White House.
I suggest we remove all pictures of actual people from our coins and paper money, and go back to stylized representations of Lady Liberty, updated to 21st Century standards, of course. While we're at it, I prefer our original national motto, "E Pluribus Unum" to the one imposed upon us in 1954, "In God We Trust." Besides the Establishment Clause issues, Latin just sounds cooler.

Conservatives need a deity. They need someone who can prosperity preach to them, just like their rural, traveling prosperity preachers who stimulate their dull, ordinary lives. They're ripe for the picking, and the GOP knew this decades ago when they chose to exploit them.
Before Reagan came along, Conservatives didn't have anyone who could forcefully articulate their feelings. Since Reagan, they have only had pale versions of this prosperity preaching, which both George Jr. and Senior could not maintain.
What you are currently witnessing could be interpreted as the death groans of that strategy. It's something that the GOP can no longer control, and in that sense, it's somewhat humorous to watch. I mean, talk about poor judgment.
That's exactly why Conservatives do not seem to enjoy serious reflection. Apparently, they find it endlessly depressing, and they would rather have sunshine blown up their asses 24 hours a day to drown out those dark thoughts.
The problem with Reagan is that one could argue that he wouldn't even pass the modern day, Conservative litmus test.
Reagan's presidency was a Conservative failure in the broad sense. He raised taxes, and created new gun laws. He is primarily known for beating up the middle class, and winning the Cold War. One could debate whether Reagan actually did anything unique in regards to battling the Soviet Union, but his affect on the middle class was quite obvious.
So, what we're left with is a President who primarily gutted the middle class, and for that, he is a middle class, Conservative hero.
However, the mythology that Conservatives have created about Reagan, when he threw Conservatives under the bus on two of their base issues: Taxes, and Gun Control, is bizarre.
Conservatives are so desperate for a leader, whether from the past or present, that they gloss over the reality of Reagan's failed Conservative promises. Conservatives appear to derive a strange satisfaction from hurting themselves, which seems ironic in that their attitude has become exactly what they claimed to hate: A kind of Postmodern nihilism.

The present day mythologies surrounding many past and present personalities will most likely place a new view of history.
Many school children have little or no knowledge of our (or the rest of the world's) history. What they receive comes from stylized movies and other entertaining medias.
Placing tis person... or anyone else for that matter... will help ensure that his concepts and leadership will be swayed to present him as a hero in the future.
Too bad this nation and its citizens have decided a skewed view of history is more important than a realistic and factual view since, if we somehow are able to overcome our downhill slide this go around, we will invariable repeat this cycle in the future. IMHO

Raygun was a Democrat until he got paid the big bucks by the AMA for his recording "Ronald Reagan speaks out against SOCIALIZED MEDICINE" (Medicare) and changed parties in 1962.
Interesting aside: Robert Mitchum, in an interview with the late, great SPY magazine, said that the future Mrs. Reagan (Nancy Davis) was very famous in Hollywood not for her acting, but for her blowjobs. When asked if he was worried about being sued by the then-First Lady, the inimitable Mr. Mitchum said "No", because he could easily line up 20 people to testify as to the accuracy of his statement in about 15 minutes. No wonder Ronnie loved "Mommy." And no wonder "Mommy" never sued Mr. Mitchum.

We need to rename Reagan National Airport in DC anyway, so I'm glad they've breached this issue. As a backer of Saddam Hussein, the Afghan mujahideen, anti-democratic death squads in Latin America, and someone who negotiated with Soviet dictators, DC's airport should not be named after him.
Not that it should be named after Truman either, even though he is the president who did most to win the Cold War. It should be be named after George Washington.

I've got a better idea... How about if McHenry works to rename one of the counties in his district after Reagan? How about starting there? If he wants to give the boot to a historical military figure, how about one of the following: Waightsville Avery (Avery County), Benjamin Lincoln (Lincoln County), Benjamin Cleveland (Cleveland County), or Griffth Rutherford (Rutherford County)? Or, he could call for Lenoir to be renamed (General William Lenoir). Or, he could have Shelby renamed (Colonel Isaac Shelby). He could even call to rename Mooresville. Maybe Reaganville. Plantation owner John Franklin Moore was probably a pretty conservative guy.
Better yet, why not stick it to the socialists at the University of North Carolina? He could call to rename Mitchell or Caldwell County. Both were named after men involved in founding that school.
Replace Grant? No.

Actually, I have a roll of Ronald Reagan Toilet Paper...it's the next best thing to actually pelting him or his grave with filth. I was a part of Witness For Peace in El Salvador in the 80's, and I still firmly attest to the war crimes committed by that administration. Never in our history had we an executive branch so vile as his, until GWB. I hope I don't have to start using $50 bills as toilet paper, but that's what I will do and so will my family.

these idiots tried to put Reagan on the 10 dollar bill. Now it's the 50. What the hell? Ronald Reagan, the guy who created homelessness in the 80s, ripped off the S&Ls, broke the law by trading arms to the contras, gave tax breaks to the rich, increased national deficit (later balanced by Clinton)? I guess they gave up on the 10, Hamilton, the man that setup our financial system would have none of that. So I guess poor Grant will have to go now, besides he beat the crap out of the South, so they'd love to dump him.

OK. I've stewed over having to live with the fact that this fake patriot/fake solider/fake human being was President for 8 horrifying years. Jimmy Stewart, an actually talented movie actor who served as an actual bomber commander under actual fire while Bonzo's buddy was play acting in War Department training films, is more deserving of the honor.
Then there's the fact, mentioned above, that Grant also served, under fire, as commander of multiple land armies in the bloodiest war this continent has ever seen -- and made a significant contribution to saving this country from dissolution.

I would suggest creating a new set of paper bills called IOUs, and put Reagan on the $50 IOU. He took office with less than a trillion in national debt and proceeded to triple the debt with his supply side (rich folks) tax cuts and increased federal spending, molding a new Republican philosophy nearly perfected by George W. Bush. The new IOU bills would allow citizens to act like the Federal government. Take three $50 Reagan IOUs down to Best Buy, pick up a DVD player or Play Station and head on home. You haven't spent any real money, you got what you wanted, some other guy is footing the bill.
