Rep. Harold Ford (D-TN), who had been mulling a run for Senate in New York against appointed Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, has decided not to run.
The story was first reported by the New York Post. Afterwards, the New York Times released portions of an opinion piece that Ford wrote for the paper, to be run in its entirety tomorrow. (Late update: The op-ed is now up in its entirety.)
"I've examined this race in every possible way, and I keep returning to the same fundamental conclusion: If I run, the likely result would be a brutal and highly negative Democratic primary -- a primary where the winner emerges weakened and the Republican strengthened," Ford wrote. He continued: "I refuse to do anything that would help Republicans win a Senate seat in New York, and give the Senate majority to the Republicans."
Ford's spokeswoman Tammy Sun declined to comment to TPM.
Assemblyman Vito Lopez, who had previously indicated that he could have supported Ford, told the New York Post: "After giving it considerable thought and talking it over with his wife, he reached the conclusion that he would not be running, although he said he would like to remain active in the Democratic Party here."
Ford previously represented a House district in Tennessee, which was previously held by his father, from 1997-2007. He retired from the seat to make an unsuccessful bid for the United State Senate from Tennessee. Ford had been indicating that if he were to run against Gillibrand, it would have been from her right. This was especially ironic, since the original conventional wisdom after her appointment had been that Gillibrand might have faced a primary challenge from her left, which itself did not materialize.
Hey Obama - Get in the Fight!!

Thank God. And thank you too, Harold. Senator Gillibrand is a good fit for progressive-minded upstate New Yorkers. She's a fighter for women, sportsmen, and the rural areas of our state that most people have never heard of--and by that I mean people from NYC.
She didn't need the aggravation of a primary. Neither did our party.

On the surface Kirsten appears to be an up-stater, but when it comes down to voting she's on the banker's side along with most of the Congress. I'm extremely disappointed in her representation.
All that said she's a million times better than Ford. Ford wouldn't even feel guilty about the bailout theft. With Gillibrand there's a slim chance the light bulb goes on.

Now the question is whether that small group in Manhattan with more money than brains will get the message. Gillibrand is a good Senator. One of the few things Paterson did right was appointing her. The state wins with this.

"Also, I'm a schmuck and I didn't stand a chance in hell of getting elected... It took me a while to see the writing on the wall, but what did you expect? I'm a tone deaf opportunist carpetbagger..."
There... a little pre-emptive op-edding never hurt anybody...

My ass. This is really what's he's meaning to say: "If I run, I will get my butt handed to me in a humiliating electoral beatdown, and my earnings potential as a Wall Street lobbyist will take a hit as I become a bitch-slapped laughingstock."

Yikes: I didn't intend usage of "bitch-slapping" to be in reference to Gillibrand, but rather as the crude general meaning.

I think if he ran, he would have had a very difficult time getting any support from anyone other than a few urban politicians who did not know Harold Ford from Arlen Specter.
The idea that he could not see the problem with telling the Times that he's helicoptered to other boroughs of New York is pretty revealing.

What a campaign! You woulda thunk he would have learned something about NY while living there. Did he really say that he saw Staten Island from a helicopter? That's what tourists tell their friends when they get back home.

I'm sorry to hear it. There was no danger of Ford being elected to anything here, but his attempts were very entertaining--like a reality show about the world's most arrogant and inept political campaigner.
