Former House Majority Leader (and former Dancing With The Stars contestant) Tom DeLay argued that extending unemployment benefits "keeps people from going and finding jobs."
On State of the Union yesterday, Candy Crowley asked DeLay about Sen. Jim Bunning's (R-KY) filibuster that delayed the extension of unemployment benefits. DeLay praised Bunning, and added that "there's some studies that have been done that shows that people stay on unemployment compensation and they don't look for a job until two or three weeks before they know the benefits are going to run out."
Crowley pointed out that saying "people are unemployed because they want to be" is a "hard sell."
DeLay responded: "Well, it is the truth."
Watch:
DeLay also talked about his stint on Dancing With The Stars, joking: "Hopefully my political future is I'd get to go back on Dancing With the Stars.
I just thought it would be the greatest thing -- the best fun, and it was the best I've ever had. It was just amazing. I mean, it was a lot of work, and my feet killed me the whole time. And I broke both feet. But I just had the best time.

Why even pretend these people have a place at the policy table? All the Republicans are gone, either retired or they're "moderate Democrats." What's left is a bunch of nut cases and whack jobs.

Because the media keep pushing them forward as if they had a legitimate point of view, and while that's true, we have to keep pushing back. Ignoring them doesn't make them go away, it makes them go unanswered.

Tom Delay believes he can gerrymander the truth the same way he did the Texas congressional delegation. I will have to admit he is a fancy stepper though.

Yet another GOP liar. Has anyone on this forum ever been on unemployment? I have a few friends who have and it’s not sufficient to live on. First, one has to actively look for work and document the search with the Gov. Second, the amount is not enough to pay rent for even a cheap place and also pay for utilities and food. Then lastly, employers love it when people looking for work are on unemployment since they can offer them a job with lower pay than normal. Why is that, refer to my first reason above, one must have a really good reason for turning down and offer when reporting on their job search. In some states turning down an offer will result in unemployment being terminated.

I was on unemployment once a long time ago. Hope to never have to do it again. It made it more stressful to find a job because you had to have so many contacts/interviews per week. Instead of focusing on jobs that I was qualified for, I'd have to waste time finding anyone that would give me a name and phone number, even if the pay was less than I could afford to live on. It barely gave me enough to pay rent and my 2 yr old son and I were living on rice and ketchup.
Yeah. Being on unemployment is a blast.

To clarify this and my post below, note that due to the depth of the current economic crisis, many states simply do not have the manpower to check on everyone's work status reports. I know someone who was laid off in May 2008. The state in which the person lives doesn't even require that the status report form be submitted unless someone at unemployment requests it, and such a request as never been made of this person in the nearly two years in which the person has been unemployed. I wouldn't be surprised if there are similar stories elsewhere.
Again, not that this makes DeLay right in any way, but the situation isn't as clear-cut as you're making it out to be.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I considered trying to find such a study online, but then I figured it'd be a snipe hunt and I didn't need to waste my time.

I wonder how much compensation DeLay has been collecting for his injury on 'Dancing with the Stars'? You know, when someone has been injured on the job, those industrial leave benefits keep them from returning to work. They never try and heal until right before they know the benefits will run out.

Tom Delay left Congress in disgrace after violating campaign finance laws. Google "tom delay corruption" and you get over 300K hits. And this guy still gets treated as an elder statesman. That tells you a lot about how amoral the MSM has become. If they had any sense of decency he'd be ignored.

Well if anyone should know about ripping off the system, it's The Termite!
If the unemployed take time outta their day to shop for food, well then it proves they don't want to work . .
You work, then eat . .
No work, no food - and that goes for your kidz too!!

Actually, in the current circumstances, I can think of one group of people who would stay on unemployment. That would be the large number of people laid off from middle-class jobs that have been eliminated, for whom their unemployment checks actually amount to more money than they'd make at the type of jobs they can currently get. (near-minimum wage and/or part-time). I know a couple people who have been in that situation. Of course, cutting off unemployment is exactly the wrong way to address the problem. The country needs to start creating middle-class jobs again, which I sadly don't see happening any time soon.

I'm wondering if other Republicans will agree with this assessment. If they are smart...they won't. This is going to be twisted "Palin-logic" but follow this to its logical conclusion this fall. The Democrats could now say - hey, the high unemployment rate isn't our fault... these 14 million people just don't want to work!
