The AP is reporting that the FBI has arrested a California man for making threatening phone calls to Nancy Pelosi over the health care bill.

In an interview with TPM, FBI spokeswoman Patty Hanson confirmed that a man, Gregory Guisti, 48, would be charged in federal court in San Francisco Thursday at 9:30 PT. Magistrate Judge Bernard Zimmerman will preside over the hearing, during which Guisti will be formally charged.

The AP has more details:

Several federal officials say the man made dozens of calls to Pelosi's homes in California and Washington, as well as to her husband's business office, reciting her home address and saying if she wanted to see it again, she would not support the health care overhaul bill that was recently enacted.

"The FBI takes threats against elected officials very seriously," Hanson said.

The charges against Guisti, who was arrested today, will be unsealed Thursday.

A spokesperson with Pelosi's office tells TPM it has no comment at this time.

The report comes just a day after authorities in Washington state announced charges against a man there for making death threats against Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) over her support for the health care bill.

In the days surrounding the passage of the health care legislation in the House late last month, multiple threats and vandal attacks were made against Democrats around the country.

In a separate case, a Philadelphia man, who was declared mentally unfit to stand trial this week, was charged March 29 with threatening to kill Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA).

Late Update: Here is Pelosi's brief statement on the case.

Bloggers have also said nasty things about Republican members of Congress.
So there's terrorism on both sides.

"Saying nasty things" is an abstract generalization with no substantiation. Which leads the reader to conclude that you're making shit up because you are properly on the defensive.

By contrast, DEATH THREATS by RIGHT-WINGERS against DEMOCRATS are SUBSTANTIATED.

Here's some basic ethics:

Two wrongs don't make a right. In other words, ACTUAL threats against DEMOCRATS are not right; but so would ACTUAL THREATS against REPUBLICANS be wrong.

So your effort to lie a false equivalency into being is not only irrational and dishonest, and irresponsible, it is a horseshit effort to change the subject.

Actually the threats would logicaly be considered substantiated when and if a conviction occurs, but if we are going to pretend that charges, arrests and accusations alone are enough...

"Federal authorities have arrested a Philadelphia man and charged him with threatening to kill House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and his family."

In refutation of your fake objectivity, this is the relevant formulation based upon your criteria:

Question:

How many Leftists have been arrested for making death threats against Republicans?

Answer: ZERO.

Question:

How many Republicans/right-wingers have been arrested for making death threats against Democrats?

Answer: TWO -- that we know of.

In addition, as were Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, "Hutaree" and the "sovereign citizen" loons are RIGHT-wingers.

I'm not aware of any authoratative source that says that anyone who was arrested for making threats was a "Right-Winger" or a "Republican" or that they were not a "left winger" or "democrat", so, in addition to not being able to comprehend your own argument it appears that you are prone to baseless assumptions.

The talking points -- LIES -- are those spewed by hate-radio and FOX. Hate-radio and FOX are far-RIGHT lunatic fringe, which cater to Republicans, not to Democrats.

That identifies the political affiliation of BOTH those who threatend Murray and Pelosi.

The only Republican threatned? Cantor -- by a person too deranged to stand trial. And that person threatend people in both parties.

Calm down your foaming at the mouth. You're gonna drool on yourself. LOL Air America was 'hate' radio for the left. Of course it never did anything but bleed red ink because it had no market share. Because, and pay attention here, the left is the real fringe and there simply aren't enough of you to provide an audience. A 'finge' by definition cannot support an advertising driven medium like talk radio. If there were, left wing radio programs would proliferate. They don't because practicaly nobody listens to them and they can't draw advertising revenue. There's no great conspiracy, just simple economics and for Air America that ended in a Chapter 7. That's chapter 7 as in gone, bye bye, liquidated. It doesn't help your cause that as soon as democrats get any real political power they promptly implode in about half the time it takes the GOP to go off the rails. Spending virtually all available political capital on a half baked health care plan that doesn't even really make the political base happy, and infuriates independents and the GOP base including the elderly who turn out in droves to vote in mid terms would be an example of how to achieve that implosion.

That said you still have nothing but speculation and assumption with regard to the affiliation of any of those arrested and rambling off onto a tangent about FOX etc won't change it. I'm bored now so I'll leave you to preach the the choir.

The evidence is the talking points/lies that came out of their own mouths. Both spew Republican/Right wing falsehoods as their "reasons" for their death threats.

That stamps them as being Republican/right wing.

You're also conveniently forgetting the 10 or so Democratic Congressmen who received death threats -- those being verified by the Capitol Police.

Oh, yes, it's true. There have been liberal flare-ups. The Revolution was one. WWII was another. Then in the 60s, folks got a little testy about a Democratic president president lying us into a pointless war, where the meat grinder of the draft affected way more than the 10% or so who do all our fighting now. They did illegal things in their protests.

And that last episode (Ayers and all) was 40 frickin years ago. And the episodes of liberal flare-ups pop up maybe every 40-50 years. And nobody, Ayers included, threatened the life of a single elected official.

Conservative anti-democracy efforts pop-up maybe every 20 years, and always simmers just below the surface. And they almost always threaten governmental representatives' lives or, at least, livelihoods (McCarthy, John Birchers, KKK, Michigan Militia a la Terry Nichols, and on and on).

That the dog-whistle language of any Democrat being a Nazi (know what they deserve, Right) has been used ever since the McCain/Palin rallies, and daily on Fox since Obama's inauguration is without question or challenge. And the nature of that language has only one intent: Irrational fear leading to violence.

Name one leftie encouraging hangings (like that Repug representative saying that's what she wanted to do to her Democratic opposite number at the town hall meeting) or any other direct act of violence to solve the policy differences.

I admit I say some very unkind things about these uber-conservatives, because I see them (you?) stirring the pot toward armed civil war. That irks me. However, unless you shoot at me first, my proposed action is to do everything possible within the law to ensure these uber-conservatives never hold power over this country again. Enough damage has been done for at least the next half century.

_____

The war was pointless waste, but this is a fuller history:

France had long treated Indochina -- Vietnam, Camboida, Laos -- as if it were a suburb of Paris. Post-WW II the US, under Truman, provided money and military materiale to the French.

When the Frnch got blown out at Dien Bien Fu, the US took France's place.

Eisenhower sent the first "advisors".

JFK sent the first troops.

Johnson escalated.

Nixon illegally bombed civilian areas of N. Vietnam.

I beg to differ. The structure of the language you used does not point to original thought. It appears that some central force (fox?) is instigating these thought patterns. That force must be brought to account in order to " ... insure domestic tranquility ..." as the Constitution allows. Arresting and prosecuting troublemakers is a legitimate function of State.

Anyone who uses "socialist" and "fascist" as though they were interchangeable terms obviously knows nothing more than he or she hears on Fox News.

Even more revealing, you whine "my democracy is being taken away" while opining that "it's just plain darn unfair that I should have to live with the results of a democratic election." It's not really your fault; your mummy a daddy obviously did a very poor job raising you.

No, what most peple feel is unfair is that they are constantly told by the democratic party that they have to financially support people who refuse to support themselves. The most noticable effects of the healthcare bill will be

1. Insurance premiums will go up. They have to to subsidize the unhealthy people insurers will be required to cover.

2. Jobs will be exported because it is cheaper to send jobs to the third world than provide mandated healthcare benefits. This is already the trend the upcoming mandate for coverage will accelerate the process.

3. Rates for providers will be cut for the same reason premiums will increase.

4. Availability of care will decrease because of number 3. This is already happening for those on Medicaid and Medicare in response to existing rate cuts. Providers are simply deciding that Medicare and Medicaid aren't worth the trouble and are focusing their marketing efforts elsewhere. Those outside the healthcare business are generally unaware that cash paying patients can already demand appointment priority, and usually get it since providers will make double or more by seeing them compared to what they do by billing insurance. Those with financial means will have even more advantage as insurance rates to providers decrease. It's simple economics.

The backlash in November is going to be vicious. Obama spent all of his political capital on a healthcare bill that didn't even include the much heralded public option. Worse for democrats the negatives will start to be felt immediately as inssurers and employers gear up for the upcoming 2014 changes. Premium hikes began occurring at the mere antipaction of the bills passage. Medicare and Medicaid have already taken cuts. But the benefit from most of the bills provisions won't be realized anytime soon by anyone. Politically it will be a disaster. 1994 all over again.

Silly post. Take a look at Canada's system -- people there live longer than here and the country spends less to get that outcome.

We all have enough friends with college age kids unable to find jobs thanks to you guys electing Bush and company and friends with pre-existing conditions that the news that HCR helps will get around pretty fast.

And that Fox and Palin told lies about HCR will become so apparent that even tea baggers like yourself won't believe them.

Look at it this way. Threats of violence and actual violence against persons has always been illegal. No matter what the decade.

Its one thing to protest in a non-violent way. Or exercise your free speech civil rights.

Its quite another to threaten and to use force and violence against persons.

In that respect, I'll cheer the FBI all day long. Especially if they are arresting and locking up out-of-control right wing militia and bat-shit crazy right wing terrorists.

That just makes my cheers that much louder.

The essence of democracy is elections. The Constitution expresssly stipulates that there shall be elections.

The US is a democratic republic.

You're the extremist; the Founders/Framers wree centrists -- LIBERALS.

They lived in an age of monarchy, so naturally distrusted democracy. But elections had been the political norm from the beginnings of the several colonies. And if one reads The Federalist, one learns that they distrusted democracy but did not reject it.

As the system was established, the most democratic element -- the first level of democracy institutionalized -- is the House. The check on that is the cooler-headed Senate.

The least democratic is the unelected judiciary.

Trolls who push that line are invariably of a tiny minority of anti-elitist elitists -- elitists who are vociferously invested in being anti-intellectual.

You probably don't get an answer because your question isn't relevant to anything. Try to understand and comprehend: Bush isn't in office, and, as far as I know, isn't running for anything. When he was in office democrats like John Kerry and Hillary Clinton happily backed the invasion of Iraq and voted for the resolution authorizing it. During the last two years of his presidency democrats like Obama, who controlled congress, happily helped run up the debt like pigs in a trough. I know your life revolves around obsessing over Bush, and this probably makes some nice mental health professional some money in a tough economy, but, at the end of the day, your point is what? Bush was a lousy president and ran up the debt so Obama and company should try to F things up worse? The DNC should hire you to do slogans: Bush sucked, Democrats can to.

Hence the relevancy. Where were you? Wait, I recall, you was that old lady in the McCain rally asking old Gramps whether Obama was really a Muslim. Fool.

I know your type, claiming to be independent while keeping your 'deficit concern' handy, pulling it out in any political debate like it's the ultimate trump card. It's comforting for you to position yourself as an observer, contemptuously watching from the side lines. Where do you live? I think you have been listening to A Prairie Home Companion way too much and have gotten very confused: he was talking about cougars, not Panthers. So be very careful, they are much more frequently sighted that Panthers at voting booths.

There is no right to shoot your imaginary enemies based upon skin color.

Moreover, there is a hundreds-of-years tradition of prohibiting armed citizens and groups at polling places on election days.

Suggestion: Put down the gun and get the help you need with that paranoid racist hallucination.

If you want an example of what life in the US would be like if the Republicans and Libertarian get the small, impotent government they want, look to Brazil. There, due to lack of social programs that keep the poor comfortable and due to the corruption of politicians who take the money when those programs do get pushed through, it isn't safe to be a wealthy Brazilian. The huge gap between the rich and the poor is the cause. The leadership within the poor communities have found a way to provide; by robbing and kidnapping for ransom the family members of the rich elite. One plastic surgeon has even developed a method for repairing the ears cut off my kidnappers because it is such a common occurrence. It is all quite simple, keep the poor comfortable or pay for their wrath when they find a way to keep themselves comfortable. Health care coverage is one way of keeping social unrest at bay. To believe that with a lack of government involvement and support for the poor a safe environment is possible is to show the most extreme ignorance of societal realities.

I'm not "cheerleading" the FBI, I am glad they are doing their job. And for the "both sides have terrorists.." yadda yadda bullshit! There was real anger and opposition to Republican Government but there was not large scale death threats, so stop all yer frigging equivocation. The Tea Party is a mass racist tantrum encouraged by the most cynical wing of the US Chamber of Commerce. Screw forced Gay/Islamic marriage, when the Revolution comes these people will be reeducated as the sex slaves of our most atheistic goats.
