Former Bush Ambassador Thomas Schweich is running for Missouri state auditor, but that isn't stopping him from rocking out in his spare time. In fact, Schweich and his band, "Ambassador Tom and the Mortgaged Youths," recently released a music video of their conservatively-themed rock song "Gimme Back My Freedom."

Schweich got together a band of young conservatives to help him produce the anti-big government video, though he wrote the music and lyrics himself.

But before he was anti-government, Schweich actually used to work for The Man. Back in 2007, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to be coordinator for counternarcotics and justice reform in Afghanistan. This followed posts at the State Department, and as chief of staff for a number of U.N. ambassadors, including John Bolton. Schweich is also a litigator for Bryan Cave LLP, a national law firm.

Now, his campaign for state auditor has landed him the backing of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R). And he still has his all-important license to rock.

Some of Schweich's lyrics?

"Bailouts and debt/ They got me feelin' dissed/ Sellin' out my son/ To Chinese Communists."

He also gets in some hits against President Obama:

We don't bow,
To hateful foreign kings.
We don't apologize,
And we don't kiss their rings.

"Ambassador Tom and the Mortgaged Youths" released its first music video about two weeks ago, with Schweich on lead guitar and vocals. In it, they rock out everywhere from the recording studio to the hood of a car to what appears to be somebody's backyard.

And of course, as in any legitimate rock video, there are groupies.

Watch it:

On Mark Reardon's April 6 KMOX radio show, Sweich said "Gimme Back My Freedom" is "sort of a protest song. It's kind of like the new Civil Rights movement we're seeing for people who want smaller government."

He noted that the song is "completely separate" from his campaign, and that he and the band are "just hoping that maybe we can play some gigs around the country."

[TPM PHOTO GALLERIES: BUST A MOVE: DANCING WITH THE POLS]

And here 's the full set of lyrics:

You think you're so smart,
That you can run my life,
Well I don't need your help,
And neither does my wife.

Bailouts and debt,
They got me feelin' dissed,
Sellin' out my son,
To Chinese Communists.

Chorus:

I don't like it,
I won't take it,
With God's help yeah,
We're gonna make it.
[Gimme back my freedom.
Or I'm gonna fight.
I don't need your handouts.
I just want my rights.] (x2)
Oooh hoo. All right.
Are you ready to fight?
Yeah yeah. All right.
Are you ready to fight, fight, fight?

We work real hard,
For all we have achieved.
And we love every life,
From the day it was conceived.

We don't bow,
To hateful foreign kings.
We don't apologize,
And we don't kiss their rings.

Chorus

You talk way down,
To everyone it seems.
To small town girls,
To the United States Supremes.

We're on to you,
So get off of your tower.
My Constitution says,
The people have the power.

Chorus

Oooh hoo. All right.
Are you ready to fight?
Yeah yeah. All right.
Are you ready to fight, fight fight?
Are you ready to fight?
Yeah, Ready to fight?
Ready to fight,
Yeah, ready to fight.

Unless, of course, they're Saudi oil oligarchs. Then they get a smooch on the lips and some serious handholding.

Yeah, it's weird how this stuff only bothers them when done by a center-right democrat, instead of a far-right republican.

Apparently, the irony of a former "drug warrior" ranting about how he doesn't need the government to run his life is lost on him.

A big step up from most GOP productions. I was watching Christopher Walken playing an art gallery security guard and realized he looked like a Republican Senator.

Bohemian Like You - Dandy Warhols

Complete with the wooowoos in there. The original is a very NSFW video. And the original song doesn't call for violence iirc.

Wow, more misplaced anger. Thomas, you should have aimed this at the previous administration. But that would require thought and, um, a memory of what actually happened.

That was fucking terrible. The drummer needs to learn how to play to a click, and the guitar players are at the same proficiency level of a 7 year old after 3 weeks of private lessons.

Never mind the singing.

EXCLUSIVE: Schweich Camp Contacted The Dandy Warhols Weeks Before Denying Connection To Their Song
UPDATE: Schweich responds.

Shortly after we posed questions about the striking similarities between The Dandy Warhols' "Bohemian Like You" and Ambassador Thomas Schweich's "Gimme Back My Freedom," Schweich denied any connection between the songs. Recall this passage in The Beacon on April 7:

[Schweich] was most upset today by allegations on the Democratic-leaning site, Firedupmissouri.com, that the tune is patterned after Courtney Taylor-Taylor's "Bohemian Like You,'' recorded in 2000. Schweich said that's absolutely not true. "The words and music are my own,'' he said.

His music heroes, Schweich continued, are a bit more well-known -- namely, members of the legendary rock band, the Rolling Stones. He's attended a dozen of their concerts.

Fired Up! has obtained documents from The Dandy Warhols showing that Schweich's statements to The Beacon were misleading - at best. An attorney for Schweich contacted the band in February, at which time he stated that Schweich's song "does play on a few themes from Bohemian Like You," and wrote that a "tentative title" for the song was "Conservative Like You."

In fact, Schweich's representative even opened the door to "a modest fee" in exchange for permission to use the band's intellectual property because "Tom wants to show his respect for the band and wishes to have the band's and record company's cooperation and blessing, if possible."

Schweich's attorney even stated he is "a big fan" of The Dandy Warhols -- a fact he clearly forgot to mention to The Beacon's Jo Mannies.

The Dandy Warhols denied Schweich's requests, at which point Schweich's attorney promised that he would "go in a different direction" and rewrite the song. He didn't rewrite much, it would seem.

The bigger story here is Schweich's response to the Missouri press corps. When challenged on the similarities between his song and "Bohemian Like You," Schweich expressed disgust and flatly denied any similarities. "Schweich said that's absolutely not true," Jo Mannies wrote. "The words and music are my own,'' he declared, and then shifted the conversation to one about his musical inspirations.

Back to you, Tom....

Slight correction: Thomas Schweich is the front man for this group but he's not the lead guitarist. The lead guitarist would be that guy, um, playing lead guitar.

Anyway, this song and performance merit a redefinition of lame downward.

I can't wait for their blues number:

"Oh, I woke up in the morning, and I saw my Porsche was gone!" "Oh, I woke up in the morning, and I saw my Porsche was gone!"

"Well, it made me so damn mad, I threw my Champagne on the lawn!"

Spectacular! If this is patterned after anything Dandy Warhols has done, then the Dandy Warhols are in deep shit, too. I'm not completely sure it's the worst thing I've ever heard, though . . . I'd say second.
