On The Daily Show last night, Jon Stewart tried to figure out why CNN hired conservative RedState blogger Erick Erickson, "or as you may know him 'Erick, son of Erick.'"
At least, Stewart said, the move explains CNN's new slogan: "CNN: We Have No Idea What The F*ck We Are Doing."

CNN has lost its way. Cable news networks are now ideological platforms full of "opinions" we don't need or want. Just present the facts within their appropriate context for the viewer. Ericson and people like him are ignorant, untrained political hacks looking for their 15 minutes of fame and money. For everyone of these newly hired "bloggers" there are millions with opposing views that may be more within the center of political thought, and certainly more qualified.

all media is inherently biased. journalistic objectivity is a myth. all sorts of biases are built into reporting and acting as gatekeepers of information. my favorite example is the way truth can be distorted in misguided efforts at "balance" by simply offering equal time to, say, a biological scientist and a creationist. that "balance" creates a false impression that the two side are equally credible. in the effort to *appear* objective, the truth is distorted. I could go on with further examples
the real important thing is that news outlets are honest in the stories they relate. that's what makes news credible, not viewpoint
TPM has credibility as a news site because they have credibility as truth-tellers. Fox is not credible because they do not tell the truth

I grew up in that world. It used to be honest. It used to be honorable. The only industry protected by the Constitution. And there was a good reason for that. Democray depends on an informed citizenry. How's that working for us lately?

The problem is that CNN is forced to "compete" with FNC and MSNBC for viewers. In a perfect world, they would say that opinion isn't their role and they'd just give us the danged news.
I liked CNN and HLN back when they were news services.

The way to compete with the truth is to use a copyright, trademarked tag line like Fox does: Fox, "fair and balanced", a truth telling CNN, "Balanced and Responsible."
The part of the fairness doctrine that Limbaugh fears isn't 'Fairness' per se. The fairness doctrine stipulates 'responsible' content. That means you can't purposely misinform viewers or listeners.
If CNN tagged themselves as "balanced and responsible" and pushed that the way Fox pushes theirs, Fox would crumble because with time, people would realize that they are irresponsible and so only a form of entertainment, for wingnuts, not news.
By not pointing out the irresponsibleness of Fox, CNN has forced themselves to ape Fox instead of the reverse.

Yes, it was back in the epoch known to geologists as the Pre-Cable Era. Back then, ancient journalists believed they had a Constitutional responsibility (free press = free nation) to inform the public so that voters could make reasoned decisions at the ballot box. Truth was more important then ratings or readership.
Good times.

I'm going to go a little more personal on CNN.
CNN is like the weird kid who on the play ground. When he starts loosing friends someone cooler shows up he starts eating boogers and taking his cloths off to get attention.
CNN is simply desperate for attention, and the just keep getting weirder and dumber in an attempt to grab some ratings.

I guess the way to make this right is to work WITH the system from within.
I'm going to start a blog and begin building a resume so that I can get hired at CNN.
I'm going to talk about John Roberts and Sam Alito taking turns skull fucking Ruth Bader Ginsberg and jacking off on the Constitution between briefs.
Then I'm going to explore how "some people might say" that Rush Limbaugh and Lindsay Graham play pitch-n-catch on weekend get togethers while they host kids under their "Big Brother" program obligations and skull fuck their elderly grandmothers while the kids watch.
I think I'm a shoe-in.

CNN is an excellent example of the Main Stream Media and their concern for presenting news and the truth with investigative reporting.
IT'S NON-EXISTANT.
It is only about advertising revenue and viewer ratings. It has been this way for a very long time.
At this point in time, Cable News Network wouldn't know investigative journalism if it accidently appeared on their live feed and showed up on televisions everywhere.

Excellent, excellent, excellent. Thank you, Stewart. Thank you.
If CNN had hired someone who claimed that Chief Justice Roberts was a child molester, advertisers would have left quicker than Timberwolves fans following the Garnett trade. And, that person would have been fired shortly thereafter.
This guy needs to go. Seriously. There is free speech -- and then there is just making up hurtful crap about people and labeling it speech.

CNN sucks. They really do. Honestly.
I keep a brick by the remote in case I get an urge to watch that bullshit cable channel, and if that urge doesn't pass I smash myself in the face with it. The information I receive via this method is equal to whatever CNN wants to impart with me anyway--this works with AP as well, they suck too. Fox is a an honest broker in comparison, even if they do follow the old Weekly World News format of wrapping their GOP-formulated manure in a veneer of implied respectability. At least there's entertainment value at Fox News--at CNN, there's only the promise of dead brain cells. YMMV

CNN = Commercial Nuisense Network.
To regain ratings, CNN will need to do the following:
1. FIRE ANDERSON COOPER
2. DUMP CAMPBELL BROWN
3. RETIRE LARRY KING (he looks like a cadaver)
4. GET RID OF THE ENTIRE MORNING CREW
5. FIRE WOLFE BLITZER
6. FIRE FREDRICKA WHITEFIELD (DUMB AS PALIN)
7. RENAME TO JOHN KING SHOW AND MOVE IT TO HLN AT 3:00AM
Then they need to recruit new blood (like MSNBC).
Make the shows more inter-active using new media and actually reading viewers concerns.
How about, STOP INTERUPTING PROGRAMMING EVERY 2 MINUTES FOR COMMERCIAL BREAKS?
I stopped watching CNN about 2 years ago because I could not watch the first 3 minutes of programming without the ads.
What's up with John King? Hand under chin bull shit? All these tea baggers and not challenging the Republican talking points? John king is Sarah from Wasilla in the male form (and I am being kind to males).
The only person on that network worth their journalistic weight is Candy Crowley, but she needs to travel the country instead of just sitting at that desk.
