Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) went head-to-head with Bill O'Reilly last night over the Democrat's attack on Goldline and conservative pundits like Glenn Beck who have ties to the gold seller.
"Defending someone that gouges consumers? You ought to be ashamed of yourself," Weiner scolded O'Reilly.
Last week, Weiner (D-NY) released a report that said Goldline "uses aggressive sales tactics, conservative spokespeople and rhetoric to sell over-priced gold coins to unsuspecting consumers." He also excoriated what he called the "unholy alliance between Goldline and conservative pundits."
Beck had appeared on O'Reilly's show last Friday, chomping on a hot dog and defending Goldline against Weiner's charges, citing the company's A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau. "It's almost like Weiner is going after something else," Beck said, before adding "maybe" and pointing to himself.
Last night, Weiner pointed out that the Los Angeles Times had reported that the Better Business Bureau can be paid off to give companies a higher rating. "Glenn Beck has a responsibility to the people who watch his show to say, 'You know what? There are smart ways and dumb ways to buy gold.'"
O'Reilly responded: "That's not true. He doesn't have that responsibility."
"I defy Glenn Beck to dispute the premise of the report," Weiner said, adding "Bill, you're being a shill for this company," and "you ought to be ashamed."
Weiner ended the interview by agreeing to O'Reilly's offer to set up a debate between the congressman and Beck next week.

Beck is setting himself up to be held liable in a lawsuit, no matter what Bill-o says. I know buying any gold at current prices is bullshit as an investment vehicle, that buying gold coins is double bullshit and buying someone's special super duper coins is triple bullshit. I suspect Beck knows it is bullshit as well, but since his whole brand is being the one voice of reason for his sheeple, this amounts to misrepresenting the nature of the goods and services at issue. In other words, Beck is conspiring to defraud his viewers. Someone will sue him over this, and he will probably settle rather than have anything be publicized. At least Bill-o can counsel Beck on how to get through that sort of embarrassment.

I agree - but liberal talk radio needs sponsorship. They operate on a shoe string so I guess you do what you have to do to keep the sponsors. It's cheaper for the sponsors to have the hosts do their shilling and I presume they get paid extra for that. I don't know that for sure.

I disagree. For many many years, truth in adverising laws have fallen to wthee wayside and fraud is rife in this nation. This is only a miniscule example.
Law enforcement has totally and blatantly taken the side of these scoundrels against consumers. We seem to be proving the Christian Right assumption "evolution of the species" is a myth.
Our leaders are some of the biggest culprits. They are allowed to lie, misrepresent, withhold facts... all without the least fear of liability or defamation laws kicking in.
We are sliding down that slope and reading statements like abobe pretty much reinforce this...
I guess it is inevitable that great nations usually fall from within... IMHO

Even the US Mint has a significant markup on gold coins that they sell to the public.
http://www.usmint.gov/pressroom/index.cfm?flash=yes&action=goldplat
In my opinion, buying gold coins is rich man's coin collecting hobby, not an investment.
Even the NYSE traded ETF representing stored gold bullion (ticker sym GLD) is not without risk, but the markup is tiny compared to coins. Risk was like this between May 27, 2008 and today: if you bought GLD on May 27, 2008, the price fluctuated about -20% to +35% between then and now. When did one have to sell it? That was the risk...the day one needed it was a bad market day for GLD

Yes, I'm sure Beck is just salivating at the thought of debating Weiner. Not.
Weiner is an intelligent, seasoned politician--a New York Jew, no less (Go Tribe! My tribe, that is.). He's tough, well-spoken, and not easily intimidated. Beck, on the other hand, is an incoherent, ignorant loon. Weiner would destroy Beck. Which Beck would then blame on being "trapped", or Weiner being "impolite", or "hostile," or some damn thing.
I'm putting the over/under on Beck actually accepting at 50-1.

1) For reference, Goldline also secures paid testimonials from Monica Crowley, Mike Huckabee, Laura Ingraham, Lars Larson, Mark Levin and Fred Thompson.
2) Weiner's report indicated that the coins that Goldline sold had on average a 90% markup over the melt value of their gold. And they were invariably available for less at other websites.

Out of all that back and forth, the telling comment was by "O'Really?". When the Congressman pushes him he finally admits "I don't care!" In every debate there is a turning point. In this argument, that was it. Bill-O doesn't care. His only concern is ratings and ad sales. I like others here don't ever watch this show. If the congressman and Beck do appear on the show to debate, I'm sure I will tune in. Can't say I enjoy blood sports (which this will be-poor Beck) but I'll make an exception in this case.
