President Obama, speaking from Louisiana today, criticized BP for spending big money on television advertising and shareholder dividends, suggesting the company was prioritizing its own interests over those of Gulf residents.

"I don't have a problem with BP fulfilling its legal obligations," Obama said. "What I don't want to hear is when they're spending that kind of money on their shareholders and spending that kind of money on TV advertising that they're nickel and diming fishermen or small businesses here in the Gulf who are having a hard time."

The President said that government officials were making sure that claims were processed correctly, and "that BP is not lawyering up, essentially, when it comes to these claims."

Yeah, right. President Obama sure set an example with the banks of how he won't tolerate enriching executives and shareholders while nickel and diming the American people.

I posted my progress on the other thread, but in short I've completed 21-chapter outline and 9 chapter rewrites. Painful, but satisfying. Nope, haven't seen Weezie. Miss her too. Marinus is in rare form, scorching the Sailorsubstitutes.

Satisfying is the key word. Stay with it.

Yes Marinus is in true form and sailmarlowe has been kicked out but he's back posting under Arundahti (believe it or not) and Lars Svensen. A douchebag no matter the avatar.

Have a great weekend

This is good, this is what we've been waiting to see. Now enforce that, Mr. Pres, talk is cheap.

Note to Josh - the real issue here is not the ads but the DIVIDENDS paid out.

And Mr. President, if you were concerned about their lawyering up, then you had every reason to declare a state of emergency and monitor all of BP's corporate communications for the last forty-some days.

Obama needs to make sure BP doesn't split itself into new companies, one of which would have all the liability attached and the other all the remaining assets. In Northern California we saw PG & E (electricity utility) do this, and with much worse consequences, Hurvitz did this when he split Maxxam so as to allow one part to declare bankruptcy and the other part to continue to fill his coffers.

It's time to rein in corporations; they have become sociopaths.

As the saying goes, "all politics is local". As the ecosystem and food chain is slowly being broken down and contaminated in front of their eyes, some members of the local Louisiana media and politicians are still pushing the meme of lifting the moratorium on drilling. They are fully aware that we have no clue on stopping something like this from happening again but yet rather risk the very health of their citizens to appease big oil. Chasing the all mighty dollar has become so paramount that we are killing our future generations for it. The hand wringing and rending of garments bit by Jindal and Landreiu is just a dog and pony show for the idiots. All the while knuckleheads like this editorial of the Times-Picayune are calling for more drilling and I say again, as the ecosystem and food chain is being broken down and contaminated. 20 years from now people will be wondering what is the cause of the giant cancer cluster happening in the Gulf Coast region why are so many babies being born deformed? It will all be traced backed to this spill because of the cumulative affect of eating contaminated seafood.

Lately it has become the norm if not already passe to blame the federal government for lack of regulation and BP's incompetence. What is lost in all this is the complicit behavior of Louisiana politicians over the years by taking kickbacks and campaign contributions that help lead us up to this point. The same can be said about the debacle of Katrina. Sadly even with all those supposed revenue streams from oil the state is consistently ranked among the lowest in economic prosperity and social well being (education, social services, health care, etc). Louisiana must come to the realization that it needs to get off the teat of oil more so than the rest of the nation if it wants to move forward. The behavior demonstrated by some local Gulf Coast leaders to want to continue drilling is not that much different than a crack addict who knows they need to get off the stuff but lack the will to actually do it. Within 5 years two major catastrophes happened to Louisiana and yet it seems no lessons have been or will be learned from them.

Katrina was an event in which 1.4 million people were made homeless. The federal government had to respond as the local and state authorities where unable. Today the NOLA coast fishing industry (fishing, restaurants, hotels) is not functioning and Jindal is calling for more drilling and about to spend BP money to move sand. When is Jindal going to make BP take care of his people?

Mind boggling isn't it. And that big fat redneck Haley Barbour is no better. He's all over TV saying there is no toxicity from the dispersants and the media is making too much of it and scaring people!!! It makes one's head hurt.

Time for the FBI to round up all BP executives they can get their hands on and do the traditional "perp walk." These assholes are environmental criminals.

Next, nationalize BP and make them spend their profits for the next 50 years cleaning up the Gulf of Mexico.

That would be justice.

Anybody else tired of these ads: "BIG Government wants to stop you from using your credit and debit cards! Tell Congress: STAY OUT OF MY WALLET!

With the retarded looking tea bagger holding out his wallet? (These are the fearful dumbasses who would fall for this crap.)

How about telling these asshats to stay off of this website! I don't need to see right-wing propaganda here. That's why I visit here.

RE: Ads...
I am amazed that while getting after BP for paying for ads while the oil mess is happening... our federal government is spending (fill in the blank) on ads of every sort while our nation is drowning in debt...
Oh well.. that's just one more example of our leadership at work...

If you are referring to ads for the census, they are done because they directly increase response rates and in turn decrease the amount of money spent doing in person surveys. Likewise recruiting ads make necessary costs cheaper. Ads like that make sense, as do ones that explain what services are available to people and how they can get help.

BP's ads have no such public benefit - they are trying to convince people that they are doing all they can, but in doing so divert money from that effort. No comparison.

Wow, Barry's gonna lose it! When BP lies to alter their image it's time for moral outrage but when Obama lies his way into the WH, well, we like him anyway. One term for this one hit wonder.

At least Obama didn't lose an election and get selected by partisan stooges on the SCOTUS, read a Pet Goat book as 9/11 went down, lie about WMD and drones of death, lie the nation into 2 wars, let bin Laden escape Tora Bora, and then say it didn't matter, lie about 'Mission Accomplished' while the mission is still going 7 years later and the casualties are the heaviest since the Vietnam War, use the war he started to get re-elected as the macho War President while botching the post-war occupation, oversee the collapse of the economy, staff the government with a bunch of 'dumb and useless as him' GOP political criminals and hacks, turn Saddam's torture prison into America's torture prison and try to turn Social Security revenue over to his GOP friends on Wall Street....just a few memories from the George W. years.
