President Obama said last night that he's looking for "whose ass to kick" over the Gulf oil spill, in an effort to diffuse critics who say he hasn't been tough enough on BP and others involved in the leak.

"I don't sit around just talking to experts because this is a college seminar. We talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers so I know whose ass to kick," he told The Today Show's Matt Lauer.

Critics and pundits have said Obama isn't angry enough at BP about the spill, and that he took too long to respond after the Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20.

The administration is trying to fight that perception. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs last week told reporters the president is "enraged" and Obama held his first press conference in months to talk about the leak.

Hmmm...Is this language (ass to kick) a Chicago thing? He was just back in Chicago recently, right?

The Chicago mayor recently, and I kid you not, answered a reporter's question about gun control by suggesting that if he (the mayor) shoved a rifle up the reporter's ass and pulled the trigger, it wouldn't feel good, so therefore the reporter should appreciate gun control.

I kid you not.

This is not the man I voted for. I voted for the calm, reserved, smart, in-control Obama. I did not vote for Bruce Banner.

It's kinda cool that he's being 'gangsta,' but it's beneath him.

If I want gangsta, I'll listen to Ice Cube, and I mean the young Gehri Curl Ice Cube, not Family Movie Ice Cube.

I guess every man has his political-pressure level.

I watched in horror last night as Keith Olbermann said, after seeing pictures of oiled pelicans, that this disaster was 'worse than Katrina.'

Did he forget the dozens of bodies floating in the fetid waters of New Orleans, left to rot for days, even weeks?

Oh, but those were those people of color, mainly, and they count for much less than those endangered pelicans.

Exactly correct.
Any comparison to Katrina except in the fact that they both effected the same area is BullShat.
Everything about it is completely different.
I'd like to hear a bit more tough talk from the Prez.
More than that I'd love to see some tough punitive action against BP, etc.

June 8, 2010 10:56 PM    in reply to Jackster

Jackster, I agree that any comparison is flawed at best.

So in hindsight where are we with the two? Well one way to see it is this:

Bush could see Katrina coming for several days and Obama had no real warning.

Bush signed the emergency request letter from the governor the day before landfall and his FEMA department didn’t get their lackluster response going until FOUR days after Katrina hit! Absolutely shameful! And the FEMA director (Brown) wasn’t removed from the post for a full 12 days after Katrina hit.

With horizon? Well, some are unclear as to whether Obama’s first public mention of the disaster (nearly 7 days after Horizon sank) was before or after his MMS director (Birnbaum) issued the safety award to the Horizon and then (even though many think she should have been fired) stepped down apparently of her own accord a mere 37 days after the Horizon sank.

Additionally, by law, response to disasters within a US State is the direct responsibility of the governors and the federal (FEMA) response will be to answer the state governor’s requests and the BP oil disaster is solely the responsibility of the federal government even if the governors are left to fend for themselves.

Guess everything depends on how you want to look at it. I think Bush’s FEMA department could and should have done a better job.

With what is publicly known about the Horizon response? Personally, I think it should be viewed as being less than as quick and decisive as Bush’s response to Katrina. The political fallout for Obama is yet to be revealed.

So Olbermann's comments were a direct response to seeing pics of oiled birds, but had nothing to do with the 50 days of untold millions of gallons of oil spilled in the Gulf?

Believe what you want, I guess. I recall Olbermann being pretty rough on the Katrina response.

"I don't sit around just talking to experts because this is a college seminar. We talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers so I know whose ass to kick,"

What kind of country or press finds talking to experts a problem? Are they always right? No. That means you go find another expert or reevaluate the situation, you don't cross experts off your list. And who are you supposed to talk to besides the people who are educated and experienced in this? Sorry, but the fishermen and the locals can only tell you how bad the problem is or how it has affected them. Not that their testimonials aren't important but they can't tell Obama how to stop the leak. It is a sick sad world when our president gets mocked for talking to experts or for getting too wonky or for providing lengthy detailed answers to a constituents question.

Good thing this is oil and damage to sea creatures and plants so our new president who was going to change things can get angry and do something because if it had just been a few thousand dead soldiers and a war fought with questionable reasons and facts... well... a few thousand dead unimportant volunteer patriots aren't really worthy of investigation, now, are they... especially when important politicians may become embarrassed and the two mobs in Washington might lose face...
It is pretty easy to see the values and priorities our leaders possess in this new improved nation of ours...

I, like many, don't hate him. I voted for him and I'll probably vote for him again. So many of us just wish he were a little bolder, had a little more of what Bush the elder derisively referred to as 'the vision thing', and fear the country's problems are piling up faster than he can address them in this frustratingly incremental fashion.

"What about this genteel very well educated President don't we get? He isn't "Gangsta" 'cause he ain't a "N***a" and he ain't a "Teabagga' cause he ain't a "red neck". President Obama is a unique product of a unique environment and it is reflected in his manner and speech which is more reflective of Franklin Roosevelt than Ice Cube. And yes FDR did have his moments but on stage his voice was calm and reassuring and above all else that is what I get from this President--calm reassurance. Why should he run around shouting and screaming when everyone around him is doing all ready? Isn't that what President Bush and company did to lead us into two wars that are so counter intuitive to the central issue of "Terrorism" as to have spawned more terrorists than has been eliminated? I respect and approve of his measured tone since BP's CEO is already shooting his company in the foot daily.

The part of the interview that's getting no attention is that our President, Obamabots' Mr. Wonderful, HAS NOT even SPOKEN with Tony Haywood, the man most responsible for the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history! I know, Obama would rather delegate his anger. Soooo corporate, sooo pathetic. And according to Richard Wolff in his book, the President knew the scope of this disaster 24 hours after it happened! How 'bout picking up the fucking phone Mr. President and demand answers, like "hey Tony, what's going on, what's the backup plan, do you have one? And I need those answers in 24 hours!" Then when he finds out there's no backup plan, well then it's time to take action. Instead this President waits 30 fucking days while BP works off the back of a fucking envelope to come up with a 'fix'! Beyond belief! This asshole Haywood, CEO of a foreign company, runs his oil operation in America on the cheap, resulting in 11 American worker deaths and is responsible for an almost unimaginable environmental and economic disaster AND IS NOT EVEN SQUEEZED or THREATENED! God save us from this President. Getting tough on TV with Matt Lauer is the best he can do?

AH, an absolutely astute observation! By that logic the police should never ask a suspect any questions. If they are guilty they’ll just lie and throw up a smokescreen. Or maybe they ask so that even if they lie it’s on record.

I realize some folks think our current president is going for the “chummy friend of anyone not American” feel but do you really think that if the President of the United States calls even a foreign CEO that the CEO wouldn’t think twice about blowing smoke? Or, maybe I’m just a little bit troubled with a president who thinks he has so little “weight” that folks are just going blowing smoke his way. If that is what Mr. Obama thinks, who else that he talks to is blowing smoke? Or is it perhaps the fact that people who think a certain way think everyone else thinks that way too? I think I'll check the air during the next press conference.

I am as pissed about this whole thing as anyone but this is really lame media..

The president said he talks to experts so he 'knows whose ass to kick'.

The title and all suggests that the president doesn't 'know' whose ass to kick.

And frankly he made the statement in my view because his interviewer talked about wanting him to kick some butt.

I am pissed of at the president over plenty of things but the sloppiness of the media and irresponsible 'titles' also piss me off.

I wish Obama would break a sweat on this testament to greed, free-market fundamentalism and criminal negligence by pivoting on energy policy and economic stimulus. If past experience is any indication, he'll mail this one in, too, but I keep hoping someone in his circle of counselors/courtiers will rouse him from his complacently incremental approach to governing.

Let me preface this by saying, I am neither Republican nor Democrat. The reason I choose to be unaffiliated is because so many people toe the party line, no matter what. Frankly, I think that is shameful. Please stop talking out of both sides of your mouths. Can't believe this conversation started because Obama said "ass". I can see where many of you would be offended. I'm speaking to all you throwing around the "f" word. Maybe it would've been more palatable if he had said f'ing ass. One minute, he isn't relatable enough to the average American. Then when he shows he is human, by making the unforgiveable sin of using the word "ass", all hell breaks loose. Give the man a freakin' break. Furthermore, he did not cause, start, encourage, demand, or sustain the oil spill. Nor did he ever claim to be an expert in the field of oil spill cleanup. Apparently, this is too much for the so called experts, so why and how do we expect President Obama to stop the spill? He is consulting the experts; so to all you who seem to think he should have all the answers, what do you propose? I'm guessing you're the same people who wanted someone in office who was more relatable, so relate to this, get over yourselves for a minute, and try to put yourself in Obama's shoes. I sure wouldn't want the responsibility he carries daily. Would you?
