This week it came to light that BP had photoshopped--poorly--an official image of their crisis command center. Apparently, that wasn't an isolated incident. Let's take a closer look at this view from a helicopter, shall we?

500x_bphotoshop2.jpg

The photo, sent in by a tipster and entitled "View of the MC 252 site from the cockpit of a PHI S-92 helicopter 26 June 2010," shows up here, a section of BP's website that hopes to explain their response effort through pictures. This one, sadly, is fabricated.

The first thing you might notice out of place is the looming air traffic control tower in the upper left hand side of the photo:

BP Photoshops Another Official Image Terribly

Then, direct your attention to where the water abruptly changes shades of blue in a frenzy of pixelation, blurring, and a disappearing vessel:

BP Photoshops Another Official Image Terribly

Zeroing in on the pilot on the left, evidence of a pretty sloppy cutting job:

BP Photoshops Another Official Image Terribly

And last, while the helicopter clearly appears to be situated at some height above the boats ahead, the readouts on the dash appear to indicate that that door and ramp are open and the parking brake engaged, not to mention that the pilot appears to be holding a pre-flight checklist:

BP Photoshops Another Official Image Terribly

And so on. As one reader pointed out, the tower may in fact be an oil rig adjacent to a helipad (which would also explain why the pilots are in prep mode), but the photo's still clearly been doctored. Badly.

Obviously there are bigger fish to fry when it comes to BP. But every time they fabricate an image like this, it undermines whatever little credibility they have left, along with all of the actual documentation of the massive undertaking this has been and will continue to be. It speaks to a company still more concerned with image than reality, in charge of repairing something so terribly broken that we can't afford to treat it with anything but total candor. [BP]

The interior of the helicopter is taken with quite a wide-angle lens. The boats and water, however, looks like a very narrow-DOF lens, probably a 50mm prime.

Also, that photo has now vanished from their site.

A MYSTERY!!!

Yes, but you see in the last photo, the pilot is clearly crossing his fingers, so, you know, BP is home free.

It also looks like the SAME GUY on both sides of the cockpit. That's a pretty distinctive chin.

Probably just identical twins, both pilots. Sheesh, some of you people here are sooo paranoid!

These photoshopped images and Andrew Breitbart's doctored videos are both attempts to deceive the public.

Love how the pilot is crossing his fingers. Hoping for luck on takeoff, or doing crossies because of the deception?

I'm not sure BP even cares about what the public thinks of them. In BP's thinking, the world, and the United States specifically, need oil, and there are only so many companies out there who sell it. And unemployment in the U.S. is nearly 10%, and BP rigs provide jobs, and often well-paying ones at that.

In other words, they think they have the rest of the world by the you-know-whats and can do whatever they want.

It'd be great if TPM didn't allow BlogAds to post BP advertisements. Alas, if we have to swallow the company's strong embrace of "new media" it is appropriate that their ads should appear on posts like this.

BP didn't have to lie about this (they really do have helicopters, a "command center," etc.) and, having decided to lie, did so in a way that would have furthered no aim even if the lie had gone undetected. I mean, nothing about this image is going to make someone say "wow, BP's really on top of things."

This isn't intentional, it's pathological.

I could tell from the lighting that it was fake. The parts visible through the windows are way too blue and too well-exposed to have been seen through the tinted glass. Notice how much dingier the blues are in the upper windows - I suspect those were leftover from the actual shot.

People are so used to scenes from movies and TV that they think this sort of image is what an actual camera sees, not realizing that much of the movie and TV stuff is constructed with CGI and greenscreens.

Sorry, TPM. That's a legit photo. Probably taken from the deck of the same vessel or rig whose tower is shown on the upper left.

This is an easy one:

The photo was probably taken while the chopper rested on the deck of the vessel whose tower is shown on the upper left. That's why everything and everybody are in pre-flight mode. The "frenzy of pixelation" is obviously exhaust fumes, maybe from the chopper, maybe from a water vessel. The reason it looks like the photo may have been taken from high above the water is because of the angle of the photo and the fact that you're not familiar with the reality that the windshields in helicopters are designed to allow the pilots to look down. The problems on the guy's shoulder are the result of somebody looking a little too hard at this photo.

Let me know if I missed anything.

The "frenzy of pixellation" looks like the result of combining 2 photos. It's the zone where the wave textures don't match so they're blurred. A good retoucher could avoid it but this is a totally amateur job.

Those are clearly exhaust fumes blowing away from the camera and to the left. No question.

Of course. Because everybody knows that helicopters blow hot, visibility-distorting turbine exhaust directly in front of the pilots windshield.

And those white spots are clearly just accumulations of dandruff.

And clearly, BP intended for us to realize that the helicopter was parked. Who would assume otherwise? Just think of all the extra information incorporated into the image that would otherwise go unrevealed if the photographer had just taken the shot of the activity on the water from the deck with a telephoto lens. We would never have seen these pilots twiddling their fingers in an idle helicopter!

Of course helicopters produce visible exhaust fumes -- just like every other petroleum-burning vehicle on the face of the planet. Particularly when the helicopter is idling on a flight deck beneath motionless rotors.

And there is absolutely nothing unusual about the reflections on the pilot's shoulder.

You are a blowhard.

As much as you seem to like to gloat over the matter... it has been photohopped, but it is also still an actual photo on site. The photographer did edit the picture with enhancing the colors and removed part of the vessel the chopper was resting on. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bpamerica/4816829256/in/set-72157624429465573/ That's the original picture. So what was caught was true for the most part. The true part was the tower is there and was part of the vessel. I don't see anything entirely wrong with the edited photo though since it still was taken on site, but the original had poor quality and was touched up.

Yes, I saw through most of the false arguments being made and, on that basis, jumped to the conclusion that the spotting on the pilot's shoulder had similarly been a product of people's imagination. My bad.

This is but the latest example of endemic system failure.
The failure of every human system, organization and institution based on deceit, greed and ignorance.

Our collective sickness has reached truly epic proportions. These are the dying throes of a desperately confused race. We are literally dismantling the planet and our own societies, and our only response to our own cancerous mentality is to cover it up, brush it under the rug, deny it until the bitter end.

I'm not a big fan of BP, but the analysis here has several holes. As others have pointed out, the tower on the left is not a control tower, and actually looks a lot like part of a rig that would be in the gulf. Possibly the chopper is preparing for taking off from this rig. If so, the "sloppy cutting job" around the edges of the co-pilot's shoulder could easily be bits of the rig and the door being open and parking brake being on all fit. The "frenzy of pixelation" could easily be from water and other smearing on the windshield.

So, I'd have to say that this is pretty weak beer. Might be photoshopped, might not. Given the true sins of BP, there's a lot stronger sauce to stew them in.

The photo was probably taken while the chopper rested on the deck of the vessel whose tower is shown on the upper left.

The only vessel that could take a picture at that height would be an aircraft carrier or a very large rig. Since there are no rigs in the area, and no carriers in the gulf, there is no way this isn't photoshopped.

Having been on a carrier in the Navy, the positioning of the tower would indicate that the helicopter is on the flight deck facing aft, which is impossible because carriers need headwinds for the aircraft to take off and land. Plus they would have to be close enough to the edge of the ship in order for the flight deck not to be seen.

I am guessing that this was taken off a rig or possibly land and I mentioned above, there are no rigs in the area of 'cleanup central'.

And one last note to all the naysayers, why did BP pull down the pic. The meta-data would prove/disprove the originality of the photo. The date alone would probably be enough info.

Why anyone would stick up for BP is a mystery to me. They lied to us time and time again, they photoshopped other photos, they have killed many from this disaster to the refinery disaster for $$$$$, and now it's come light they were responsible for negotiating the Lockerbie bomber for oil rights in Libya.

Not exactly a company one would defend unless you hate dead Americans, own a lot of BP stock, or work at BP.
