The Gay Republican group GOProud will host its Homocon 2010 convention in New York City on September 25. Headlining this bash will be none other than "the right-wing Judy Garland" and conservative author Ann Coulter.
"Our gays are more macho than their straights!" the event invitation declares, apparently comparing gay Republicans to straight Democrats.
"This will be a party that celebrates gay conservatives," Christopher Barron, chairman of the GOProud board, told TPM. "The gay left has done their best to take all the fun out of politics, boycotting and protesting one thing after another. [Homocon] is our effort to counter that."
Coulter seems to be an odd choice to headline the event. In the past, she's gotten in trouble for dropping the gay equivalent of the f-bomb in public. She called 2008 presidential candidate John Edwards a "faggot" at the March 2007 Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington D.C.: "I was going to have a few comments on the other presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot.'"
At the time, Edwards fired back on his campaign website: "Ann Coulter's use of an anti-gay slur yesterday was un-American and indefensible."
The Log Cabin Republicans, another gay conservative organization, also denounced Coulter afterwards. "Coulter's words are not worthy of this event or our nation's political dialogue," President Patrick Sammon said in a statement.
Coulter tried to clarify on Fox News: "'Faggot' isn't offensive to gays; it has nothing to do with gays," she explained. "It's a schoolyard taunt meaning 'wuss,' and unless you're telling me that John Edwards is gay, it was not applied to a gay person."
The GOProud's Barron accepts that. "She came out and said that she was not calling him gay," he said. "She said it would have been an insult to gay people to call him gay."
Liberals in this country want to view conservatives in a narrow prism, but we are a tolerant, accepting group. The fact that she's doing an event for a traditional conservative group speaks volumes for how she feels about gay people.
Here's the invitation:

Maybe I've misunderstood the whole GOP family-values wedge issue effort for the past 25 years or something, but I just cannot understand how a gay person can embrace the Republican Party.
And the Right-Wing Judy Garland? Why? Can she sing? Does she have a discernable talent that I'm not aware of? Are her public appearances usually a must-see event in the gay community?

The only real difference between a member of the ruling race/class and a gay republican is sexual orientation. Granted, that has frequently been a significant obstacle to acquiring power in the gooper world. But most gay republicans, on an individual basis, have probably benefited from the demographic privileges that the reactionary right is trying to safeguard (white, upper-middle class, christian background, etc). Gay rebublicans are probably more like establishment libertarians.

Yeah, it takes a real man to let someone call you a faggot and a pervert, and then to laugh along with it, or pretend you didn't hear it.
As for "right-wing Judy Garland": if it means substance abuser with dysfunctional personal life, many Republican opinion leaders would qualify (definitely including the coke/speed-freak spinster Coulter).

You wonder how a gay person can embrace the Republican Party? I know some people who are not gay, but are closely involved with the Log Cabin Republicans.
The answer is GREED. The Republicans are anti-tax, and the US tax rate (one of the smallest in the industrialized world) is so high, and so onerous, that these gays are willing to join an organization that relegates them, by definition, to the back of the bus, due to GREED. They are quite willing to sacrifice any non-wealthy gays, in the hope that they themselves will one day join the ranks of the ruling, wealthy elite. Yeah, guys, you will be soooo welcome in the halls of power. Just like J.C. Watts was a few decades ago.
It's really pathetic.
Although it is extremely difficult, I am going to avoid Godwin's Law here. (See what I just did?)

On a blog I used to post on - and long since renounced (*cough* rhymes with "stuffington host" *cough*) - I actually met a right wing homosexual male. Being LGBT myself I was fascinated. It seems to me the right does everything in their power to denounce them in public, but try to act friendly in private. I personally could not understand how in the world he could be gay AND republican! To me the very idea of the right is pure hate. Need I remind anyone of the evil witch Virginia Foxx and her comments about Mathew Sheppard?
Personally, even if I WERE conservative I would NEVER go to ANY convention at which Ann was scheduled to speak! Any LGBT who goes to that convention is a SELLOUT! It's that simple.

It's akin to self-mutilation, and so complex that normal people cannot rationalize it. As Wikipedia cites, "Self-harm is often associated with a history of trauma and abuse including emotional abuse, sexual abuse, drug dependence, eating disorders, or mental traits such as low self-esteem or perfectionism. There is also a positive statistical correlation between self-harm and emotional abuse."
Or they're just daft.
