Stephen Colbert had conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham on his show last night to promote her new book, The Obama Diaries, which is made up of fake diary entries by the President.
Colbert read from one entry: "It's the era of 'Barack The Beautiful,' long may I reign," and then asked, "What are the odds that Barack Obama's private musings would completely and perfectly match up with the narrative that the right is trying to push about him?"
When Ingraham noted that she's never believed Obama is dumb, Colbert responded: "I've read a fair amount of this book, and I know he's not supposed to be a dumb guy, he's a great orator, but this writing is terrible."
After reading a segment that describes Michelle Obama eating baby-back ribs for every meal, Colbert added: "Obama's making the most hideous, hackneyed racial stereotypes in here."
[TPM SLIDESHOW: First Bite: Politicians Chow Down]
Ingraham then tried to deflect Colbert's criticism by referring to when Colbert called her "Ichabod Crane's banshee widow" in a previous show. Banshee, she said, is "racially" charged, and "very controversial."
Colbert fired back that Ichabod Crane is the hero of the story, and a banshee warns people when a loved one might be dying. So all in all it was a compliment.

"When he was younger, he had hoped to study marine biology, but surgery intended to repair a severely perforated eardrum caused him inner ear damage. The damage was severe enough that he was unable to pursue a career that would involve scuba diving. The damage also left him deaf in his right ear.[11][24]"
The surgery also deformed the ear.

If you see the bulk orders dagger by an entry, you know its a GOP backed book. Been that way since at least Newt - the party of "the market" doesn't trust actual market judgments, so they manipulate the heck out of it just so they can claim to have "best-selling" authors. Its like Caribou's stain of a book, which Newsmax gave away and every other outlet sold at 50% off or more when it first came out just to give it a (blessedly short) run on the top of the charts.
Compare that with Obama's books, or Franken's, or basically anyone on the left - you don't see the same bulk orders.

One of the guys from Media Matters asked the Times Book Editor why it's listed as non-fiction.
"Tanenhaus says there is a practice by the bestseller list to classify most any parody or political satire as non-fiction: 'There are any number of books that are considered non-fiction because they do not have a clearly imaginative purpose as fiction does.'"

conservatives have their own brand of humour which can be described as enjoying putting people down and hurting them. For example recently a tea partier made a blog post which was a letter to lincoln from african americans saying they want to be slaves again and they want their rights repealed becuase they are lazy. This is an example of right wing humour, or rush limbaughs statements which they call satire, thats their version of humour.

Just watching that part (around 2:31), one wonders if the look on her face is because she's just come to the realization that Colbert is about to pwn her using the actual words in the book.
"Reading" is not typically something one apparently sees amongst her Faux News colleagues. Either that, or she just realized that Colbert isn't *actually* a far-right loon; in her defense, it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell the difference between real wingnuttery and parody wingnuttery...

Laura has a weird obsession with the Obamas - particularly Michelle. I saw her on The View and she was droning on about Michelle's arms and the garden and her fashion. When BillO-Reilly went to some gather the Obamas had and complimentary of Michelle, Laura was her usually nasty way; almost like she could not stand to hear OReilly say anything positive about Michelle. I don't know if it's jealousy or what but Laura nitpicks trivial things. She almost comes across as if Michelle turned her down for a date or something.

I saw her hawking this book on Larry King Monday night and he asked her to read an excerpt. She chose one where she was reading it as if she were Michelle Obama. When she first started reading she was doing her best 'mammy voice' impersonation, I shit you not. I think she realized her mistake and she quickly dropped the 'mammy voice' impersonation. I don't know if it's available online but it was a very telling moment.

I'm not at all surprised.
It's also interesting that she chose that particular passage from the book to read. When she was on The View, she was complaining about how much media exposure people give Michelle. One of the other hosts started talking about Michelle and questioning what Ingraham was complaining about and Ingraham backtracked, saying there's more to the book than Michelle. Yet she continued to talk about Michelle.
Weird.

I assumed that Ingraham is Scottish and/or Irish. The banshee is a character from Celtic mythology. Then again, Ingraham is a German last name, so she was probably just being a dumbass.

Nope, you got it. The scots-Irish who settled the Carolina foothills (future hillbillies) brought plenty of Celtic folklore with them. The only thing "racial" about calling her a banshee is her assumption that is has to do with her being caucasion, as opposed to her nasty wraithlike appearance and shrieking vocal tones.
Cultural affiliation (like banshee-Irish) is not "racially charged" - claiming Michelle Obama (a class act and, unlike Ms. Ingraham, not someone who wasted the benefits of an Ivy League education) eats nothing but ribs, on the other hand, is disgusting. Especially given the First Lady's efforts on health and diet.

I watched this last night and almost fell out of my chair when she equated her obviously racially motivated 'ribs' entry with Colbert referring to her as a banshee. It's stunning, really. I know she was trying to be funny, but the fact that the ribs entry is in there is telling in and of itself.
These complaints that 'you can't make a joke anymore in this PC climate' ignore the fact that only a bigot would be amused by the comment. What is wrong with her editor? Certainly she could have made any number of unfunny jokes that weren't based in the kinds of racial stereotypes that had their heyday in the 1950s. But there you have it, another white person who is so 'beyond race' that they've earned the right to make racist statements and then play the 'victim of racism' card when people call them out.

Threshold is the "conservative non-fiction" imprint owned by Simon & Schuster, who are owned by CBS, who are owned in turn (up the line a bit) by Sumner Redstone.
It's interesting to note that the editor-in-chief of Threshold Editions is Mary Matalin. I guess once you've drunk that much of the Kool-Aid, you can't tell how much sh*t you're eating, not to mention whether it's just cheap sh*t or the gourmet stuff.

Her "We're having a Dartmouth moment" is a soft jab of banter, because the actual Stephen Colbert didn't attend Dartmouth but the Stephen Colbert character did.
It was at Dartmouth were she met and later became engaged to Right Wing spinster Dinesh D'Souza (aka Distort D'Newza), one of the main puppeteers behind the modern right wing media echo chamber. A man so vile that he claimed the culture of the American left was responsible for 9/11, openly opposes multi-culturalism in America because of his belief that some ethnic groups are simply superior to others (he himself being of Indian descent), opposes equal marriage because gay men are incapable of having loving monogamous relationships. While a student D'Souza published the names of officers of the Gay Student Alliance in an article for The Dartmouth Review, including the names of those who were still closeted.
D'Souza also had a fling with Coulter.
So if Ingarahm and Coulter sound and act the same, it's because they're both prostitutes for the same pimp.

Righties can't help it. When they try to do satire, they wind up simply projecting their hatred onto the subject rather than amplifying their subject's character flaws. Obama's main flaw is that he campaigned far more liberal, populist and Constitution-minded than he really is. A suitable satire might include something about shifty moves on a basketball court: "Hey you thought I was going left, but then I suddenly went way to the right!"
Unfortunately, folks like Laura Ingraham are so far right that they can't see past the color of his skin, thus they think crude old stereotypes about baby-backed ribs and wateemelon serve as satire.

A little back story--- Leopard Mini Laura & Olbermann dated at some point before she became notorious. She was also Larry Summers's arm troll when he first took up the presidency of Harvard. They tried to be discrete but it soon became common knowledge in the Cambridge-Boston area & was duly noted in the local gossip columns. She can be a handful. When "Vanity Fair" profiled her some time ago, an ex reported that she didn't take their break-up well. One day she came by while he was at work, pushed his garden hose through the mail slot in the front door, then turned the faucet on full blast.
As for banshees, I like "selena" was scared witless as a youth by their depiction in Disney's DARBY O'GILL. In that film they took the form of the ugly hag with the keening cry most popularly associated with them. However, the banshee could take whatever form it chose & often in Irish folklore appears as a young attractive woman or even a little girl. Banshees don't necessarily have to make themselves manifest, though. Often all that marks their presence is their piercing wail, which accompanies the death of a person or comes as a warning of his/her impending demise. Their most consistent characteristic, then, is their cry, thus the popular phrase "to scream like a banshee"-- something which seems to be Ingraham's default mode even when she uses her inside voice. So nothing "racially charged" at all in calling her a "banshee" or a "harpy" for that matter, which is the first word which comes to mind when I see her.

I do have one minor literary quibble with the Ichabod Crane comparison.

Tribalism on display is ugly. Watching someone make crap up about people they consider to be "them" and not "us" is nauseating unless you're also into it. Laura Ingraham is a hypertribalist: she seems to have no empathy or identification with people she has categorized as "liberals".
Remember how, for a while, during the Cold War, it was considered okay to make up ridiculous cartoonish stereotypes about how brutish and dumb and backward the Soviets were? We had films and TV commercials mocking their clothing and accents. It wasn't considered prejudice, because they were "the enemy". Right-wing authoritarians like Ingraham think like that. It's dismaying... moreso because there are so many people like her who get a positive thrill from participating in us-vs.-them thinking like that.

Hold up.
While trying (and failing) to divert Colbert with her faux banshee outrage, Ingraham started to say that "Native Americans might find [the word 'banshee'] offensive."
They might ...
But the word "banshee" is from the Gaelic "bean Sidhe" (pronounced 'banshee'), meaning "woman of the fairy folk."
http://www.irelandseye.com/animation/explorer/banshee.html
And no, Irish Catholics and pagans alike are not offended. Laura Ingraham actually does sound like "the sound of two boards being struck together," or "a thin, screeching sound somewhere between the wail of a woman and the moan of an owl."

In trying to deflect Mr. Colbert’s observation that Obama’s [supposed] description of his wife’s diet: ribs, ribs and more ribs, plays to a rather offensive stereotype of African-Americans, Ms. Ingraham attempted to point out that Mr. Colbert’s once referred to her, Ms. Ingraham, as a “banshee” (at approximately 4:15 of the video.) Ms. Ingraham attempted to intimate that Native Americans would be or should be insulted by Mr. Colbert’s use of the term “banshee.” However, a banshee has nothing to do with Native Americans and everything to do with Irish folklore.
Sorry, Ms. Ingraham. Colbert 2 : Ingraham 0

So, this is classified as Non-Fiction rather than Fiction?
Seriously. A book written to appease every "scary thing" about Obama by a right-wing fake blonde..... well, being fake says it all right there, doesn't it?

Who would buy this book and what level of mental capacity if any? It takes exceptional creativity to be this far off in the wilderness or where ever these people meet and do who knows what.

Yeah, um, Laura? Banshees are Irish, not Native American. I'm not sure ancient pre-Christian Celtic mythology carries with it any inherent racial bugaboos, but, you know, A for effort.

Thanks for the'banshee' clarification Julie/Eye-C. She obviously had that defense at the ready in case Colbert pierced her armour, which he did smartly. She was also trying to fill up time with banal talk as to avoid Colbert making any sharp costly observations - again, epic fail.
I think Colbert knew this segment would be picked apart on the Internet(s) and left plenty to snicker over.

The difference between conservatives and liberals can be observed in the appearances of Barney Frank and Laura Ingraham.
Frank more than holds his own, pointing out Colbert's logical fallacies ("I don't know how to argue with an analogy that makes no sense"), getting in his talking points (the CPA is necessary, and Warren is the best person to head it), and getting in some good jokes.
Ingraham was a deer in the headlights for most of her segment. She had no rebuttal to Colbert's implications of racism and serving a rightwing narrative. Then she feebly tried to change the subject to how Colbert had victimized her in the past. And of course she couldn't even get that right (banshees are Irish, not Native American) and Colbert fended it off with no effort.
Just goes to show who's serious, substantive and has a goodnatured sense of humor. And who doesn't.

At the beginning of the interview, Colbert also got in a dig at the "conservatives" who conflate socialists and communists. The audience got it, but poor Laura just agreed that the diary was communal property because they (Obama, Biden, Putin and Michelle Obama) are all socialists.

Huh? Banshee - from Irish mythology - racially charged?
Oh, wait... I guess she's thinking of the "Black Irish."

Laura Ingraham looks like she "channeled" Anne Coulter or they are twins separated at birth. They also practice the same monologues/diatribes and probably smoke the same cigs, partake of the same nose candy, and wash everything down with the same booze. Just like everthing else about the Repugs and their mouthpieces: blond, hackneyed, and crass. And they do not even bother to get someone capable of editing to go through their propagandized palaver full of putrid prevarications before it hits the bookstore shelves (not even Hastings could push Coulter's tripe with front-and-center placement...most are now on the Bargain Books racks, where they belong).

Her book is #2 on the non-fiction list. Does that mean it's true? Does it mean that people who buy her book are happy about lists in the NYT? And where's Laura's buddy Michelle going to go with this 14th Amendment thing?

Just about the only funny Republican I've ever read is P.J. O'Rourke, and that was quite some time ago. Even then, though, most of his funny stuff was in the form of gonzo travelogues or chemically induced jaunts. His libertarian political rants grew tiresome.

Does anyone fear this persistent lying by Republican "fans"? Will "Truth in Media" ever be seen again? It is said that not saying anything we care to say is freedom of speech and telling ONLY the truth in media would be unconstitutional, but there are many instances when we HAVE to tell the truth: courts, depositions, advertising, business documents, etc.
Why can't we return to truth-telling by labeling the content of the blog, "news," newspapers, books, radio: truth (or nonfiction), fiction, or opinion vs. fact--anything to return truth to media. It is actually frightening to read some of these blogs and comments, magazine articles and books, and "new programs," and have them perpetrated as truth when they are lying completely!
For instance, Glenn Beck has recently announced that President Obama is loaning money to Brazil to drill oil there, and sell the oil to the Chinese. Go to "Talking Points," for instance, and see what is really true (and George Bush's part in this situation).
Yet, people not only choose to believe these things about President Obama, they also chide Obama for continuing to blame George W. for present troubles. By the way, should you doubt even Talking Points--how dare you, then, try Snopes.com
How can we continue a democracy without learning the truth? Truth is necessary to make intelligent d3cisions about the fate of our Country.
