Stephen Colbert was happy to report last night that "we're out of Iraq! And best of all we got out two weeks ahead of schedule. Now Iraq will always be remembered as the war that ended early."

He added: "Let's give credit where credit is due -- to George W. Bush. After all, if this man hadn't led us into war, it certainly wouldn't be over now!"

Spectacle and slogans, they're what win elections in America! Liberals' crippling weakness is that we keep trying to talk about real stuff that matters to people's lives, while Republicans know all they have to do is whip up emotional bogeymen to stampede voters their way. Works every time.

So how about the Democrats start doing likewise? If the American people want to feel better about themselves and have their emotions, fears and stereotypes pandered to, and doing so will win elections, then do it! After all, you can't govern unless you get elected.

Agreed, Liz AND jdb - the "bumper sticker and sound byte" folks have indeed managed to grab those who are unable to think for themselves or remember real facts, but the Dems, with their overabundance of nuanced positions and statistics, facts and reasons, have an extreme lack of ability to just drill down and come up with a few short phrases that are as attention-grabbing as "death panels" and similar ugly and false two or three word blurbs that roll off the tongue easily and can be remembered by even the most Fox News-addled. I believe this is one of the reasons the "Anti-Elite" Strategy (related to the Southern Strategy)has been so effective. They convince their sheep-like followers that obtaining an education, be it completing high school, college or post-graduate, will turn them into un-American, nation-hating, tolerant, "elites," you know, folks who would be no fun to drink a beer with, and thus unsuitable to run the country. Of course, it is the well-educated GOP'ers who thought this up, but since they are pretty much all white, overfed and bigoted, their educations are not held against them. And the strategy makes sense, because getting more education exposes people to folks unlike themselves and new and different ideas, increases tolerance by taking away the fear of "the other," makes people much more likely to be capable of independent thought, less likely to settle for unsupported talking points, and thus, less likely to vote Republican. Unfortunately, that disdain and rejection of education also means that America has fallen far behind numerous other countries in the sciences, math and even basics like reading, so all the technical and other higher paying jobs are being shipped overseas (by GOP businesses) to countries where education is valued, lowering the overall employability of Americans and making us, essentially,a third world nation in the education, invention, research, manufacturing, medical, information technology and other advancing fields. Instead, we are moving from a country where people would do whatever necessary to make sure their kids could get a good education and do better than their parents, to one where kids are being raised (and in many cases, more kids than folks can afford) in families who think education is something to be scorned and avoided at all costs - wouldn't want your child to grow up "elite" would you? But, this "strategy" keeps Republicans who will never earn more than $30K, $50K or even $150K voting for more huge tax cuts for the 2% with adjusted gross incomes (after all deductions) of over $250,000. How else could you accomplish that except to encourage lack of the education that would make folks realize they were voting to hurt their own and their childrens' futures. Like convincing people that a public insurance option was "bad" (freedom-ending socialism), but Medicare (government-run medical insurance which was enlarged exponentially by Bush Jr.) was "untouchable." But hey, sorry, there I go using that college education again when I could just watch FOX to be told how to vote and what to think.

So yes, the Dems need to come up with some short, snappy catchwords to identify their positions and achievements, but when folks have so many ideas, it is hard to cull them. Still, it really, really needs to be done, and FAST! (Clearly, based on the length of my submission, I am not a candidate for the "snappy sound byte" creation committee...)

Hey, this might be a long comment but, damn, it is mighty, mighty fine. The pity is that the people who really need to see it almost certainly never will.

What's sadly terrifying about this is George Bush's rapid rhetoric, massive invasion of Iraq, murder of Saddam Hussein (an ex 'friend' of the US) and then almost complete destruction of the country achieved NOTHING. Except to make the US one of the most hated countries on the planet and create even more people who hate you.

It should have been George Bush who was in Sadaam Hussein's chair. For treason.

Very true, Leo, plus, apart from the "daddy issues" and the financial benefits the war brought to the military industrial complex (think Cheney, Bush League, etc.) and the successful redistribution of our national surplus to the personal friends, families and donors of the Bush Administration (furthered through the tax cuts for the already embarrassingly rich and the mega-buck giveaway to the Wall Street GOP contributors), it also distracted attention and soldiers from the search for Osama, son of the bin Laden family that has been close personal friends of the Bush family for decades. Seriously, did anyone really think we would ever catch, imprison or kill a bin Laden? The same bin Ladens who together with their friends were allowed, by Presidential Order, to leave the USA - without being interviewed or questioned - by private jet just after 9/11 when supposedly all airspace was closed and all air traffic grounded? We know from members of the Administration that the Bush/Cheney folks had been prepping to attack Iraq for over 2 years before 9/11, and that Bush had received 52 intelligence briefings about Middle Easterners taking flying lessons to learn to fly large jets during the summer before the attacks, so although I am not claiming he was part of the attack plan, I do believe he saw the attack as a way to justify going into Iraq - remember all Cheney's disinformation about Iraq being responsible for 9/11 even long after we all knew they were not involved, all the WMD lies, the Plame outing, etc. - and going after Iraq at that particular moment provided a way to divert troops from Tora Bora where Osama was supposedly "pinned down." If we wanted Osama, and he was in fact "pinned down," there is no way the troops would be shifted to Iraq, but we were never going to harm his friends' son, no matter what he did. I would have to agree on the treason issue, and that is a really hard thing to acceot about ANY President, even one as unqualified and illegitimate as Bush.
