Jon Stewart was pretty incredulous last night at Dick Morris' claim on Fox News that the proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero is actually a "terrorist command center." He said: "You know, just for the record, I'm against establishing a terrorist command post at Ground Zero. Or really anywhere in the city."

Stewart then followed Fox News' lead, and played what Stewart called "six degrees of people who don't eat bacon" to connect Rupert Murdoch, Fox News, and Osama Bin Laden -- and was left with the question: "Is Fox News a terrorist command center?"

Fox News should be renamed Comedy Central, and the Daily Show should be renamed Daily News. Fox makes up all this comical stuff, and Jon Stewart actually reports the facts.

Its like John Said during the Bernie Goldberg smackdown. "I'm not moving towards the news. The news is moving towards me".

That said, the Charlton Heston peice was damn good.

Terrorism means the systematic use of terror or fear in support of a political agenda.

That Fox News is a terrorist command center should be beyond doubt by now.

I've been publically calling for the State Department to rescind Mr. Murdoch's citizenship, since he has worked tirelessly since Reagan gave it to him to attack the American people through misrepresentation aimed at dividing and conquering, while furnishing a propaganda ministry for the Bush/Cheney dictatorship.

The Murdochian Propaganda machine continues intentionally misrepresenting for money.

It's no longer free speech when the result harms.

It's actually not even funny that Stewart says Fox might be a terrorist command center - they are. They've been propagating fear, terror and lies for years. It's no wonder Americans are afraid of their own shadows.

Right you are! Fox has been doing the terrorists job for them by ginning up as much fear as possible, from anything and nothing. War and fear and greedy lies fill their pockets and sell out the best interests of the nation.

I can't understand why right-wingers don't freak out about the connections between people like the Bush Crime Family or Murdoch-Fox and the Saudi Royal Family (hey, they're Muslim and swarthy too).

Think of all the coverage the "FAUX Republican Paid For Opinion Network" would have if it were The Clintons with the tie to the Saudi Royal Family !!!!

This is just wrong. If Heston were still alive, he would be attacking these liberal terrorist enablers too! They will be able to go out and shoot people and then run back into the Mosque and claim sanctuary just like on those western movies!!

That was a good one, but I think Jon Stewart may have missed a subtly on the Charleton Heston thing. The proposed ground zero mosque is ostensibly an instrument of bridge-building between the Muslim and non-Muslim communities. It is reconciliatory in nature. If memory serves (and someone correct me if I'm wrong), the NRA held its annual meeting near Columbine DESPITE the shooting, and their tone was not conciliatory but defiant. That's kind of a big difference. If the NRA had come to Columbine with a message of "We want to reach out to the victims of this tragedy and their families" and placed an extra priority safety and responsibility with guns, that would have been different.

Jon is great.
He gives us the correct news, and entertains us at the same time.
The FCC should revoke Fox News' license for calling themselves
news.

Nick Kristof's column in yesterday's NYT (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/22/opinion/22kristof.html?_r=1&src=me&ref=homepage) gets to the nub of this issue pretty well, I think. Gingrich also deserves to be placed alongside Palin in this respect.

I can only marvel at how massively irresponsible these folks are acting. Palin (and Newt) are presidential aspirants. They presumably think they can win in 2012 or 2016. Given that, how on Earth can they think it's a good idea to demean the religion of one quarter of the world's population? How can someone who hopes to lead this country in today's world think they've done anything but set US foreign relations and national security back 30 years by preemptively declaring that anyone of the Muslim faith is an enemy of the American way of life?

No doubt Palin and Newt's rationale would have something to do with a careful parsing of their speeches on the issue. But today's media, especially Fox, is a blunt instrument. Gingrich and Palin might (and I stress, MIGHT) think their comments on the topic leave them some wiggle room to back away from what appears to be a slur and call to religious conflict, but subtlety is not really possible in this media environment. You can be darn sure that the majority of citizens of, say, Indonesia, aren't going to appreciate the nuance when Newt tries to explain that he wasn't comparing ALL Muslims to Nazis...

On NPR over the weekend, George W's former speech writer Michael Gerson pointed out this obvious fact in commenting that President Obama really had no choice but to go on record in support of the Park51 developers' right to build an Islamic cultural center in downtown Manhattan. Beyond the obvious point that a sitting President (and Presidential candidate) would damage our international relations if he were to affront a quater of the people on this planet, Gerson also pointed out the President as Commander-in-Chief must think of the soldiers under his command, many of whom are either Muslim or deployed in Muslim countries where their mission is to build trust among Muslim populations.

Finally, an anecdote: my dad is a tried and true Republican. Over the weekend, he and I talked about the Park51 issue, and he expressed nothing short of disgust for the Palin/Gingrich comments. He expected this kind of stuff from Palin, who he called a "dolt," but not of Gingrich.

In other words, this stuff might play for the Tea Party element, but if my old man is any indication, this may be driving truly "conservative" folks in the Republican party back toward the center.
